Liver Cancer Diagnosis: Enhanced Deep Maxout Model with Improved Feature Set.

This work proposed a liver cancer classification scheme that includes Preprocessing, Feature extraction, and classification stages. The source images are pre-processed using Gaussian filtering. For segmentation, this work proposes a LUV transformation-based adaptive thresholding-based segmentation process. After the segmentation, certain features are extracted that include multi-texon based features, Improved Local Ternary Pattern (LTP-based features), and GLCM features during this phase. In the Classification phase, an improved Deep Maxout model is proposed for liver cancer detection. The ado

Neural network analysis of pharyngeal sounds can detect obstructive upper respiratory disease in brachycephalic dogs.

Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) is a highly prevalent respiratory disease affecting popular short-faced dog breeds such as Pugs and French bulldogs. BOAS causes significant morbidity, leading to poor exercise tolerance, sleep disorders and a shortened lifespan. Despite its severity, the disease is commonly missed by owners or disregarded by veterinary practitioners. A key clinical sign of BOAS is stertor, a low-frequency snoring sound. In recent years, a functional grading scheme has been introduced to semi-objectively grade BOAS based on the presence of stertor and other abn

Sleep Apnea Severity Estimation from Respiratory Related Movements Using Deep Learning.

Sleep apnea is a common chronic respiratory disorder which occurs due to the repetitive complete or partial cessations of breathing during sleep. The gold standard assessment of sleep apnea requires full night polysomnography in a sleep laboratory which is expensive, time consuming, and inconvenient. Hence, there is an urgent need for a convenient, robust and wearable monitoring device for screening of sleep apnea. A simple and convenient accelerometer-based portable system is presented to estimate the severity of sleep apnea by analyzing tracheal movements. Respiratory related movements were

Enhanced deep learning model for precise nodule localization and recurrence risk prediction following curative-intent surgery for lung cancer.

PURPOSE: Radical surgery is the primary treatment for early-stage resectable lung cancer, yet recurrence after curative surgery is not uncommon. Identifying patients at high risk of recurrence using preoperative computed tomography (CT) images could enable more aggressive surgical approaches, shorter surveillance intervals, and intensified adjuvant treatments. This study aims to analyze lung cancer sites in CT images to predict potential recurrences in high-risk individuals. METHODS: We retrieved anonymized imaging and clinical data from an institutional database, focusing on patients who und

Accurate surgery time prediction (ASTP) strategy based on artificial intelligence techniques.

Accurate timing prediction of surgery is essential for efficient operating room scheduling and ensuring patient care. This study proposes a two-layered Accurate Surgical Time Prediction (ASTP) framework. The first layer combines feature importance and advanced machine learning models to estimate surgical time. After preprocessing, two complementary interpretable AI methods were used: Long Short Term Memory with SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) values and Random Forest permutation importance, to determine the importance of features. In the second layer, subsets of features (TOP-K) were prog

Integrative multi-cohort analysis of DNA methylation profiles for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma biomarker discovery and prognosis.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains one of the most lethal human malignancies, in part due to late diagnosis and the lack of robust molecular biomarkers. Although aberrant DNA methylation is a defining feature of PDAC, most studies rely on single cohorts, limiting reproducibility and biological interpretation. Here, we performed an integrative multi-cohort analysis of genome-wide DNA methylation profiles from four independent PDAC datasets generated on Illumina EPIC and HumanMethylation450 platforms, comprising 364 tumors and 99 normal controls. Using a harmonized preprocessing cro

Cyclic transitions between higher order motifs underlie sustained asynchronous spiking in sparse recurrent networks.

A basic-yet nontrivial-function which neocortical circuitry must satisfy is the ability to maintain stable spiking activity over time. Stable neocortical activity is asynchronous, critical, and low rate, and these features of spiking dynamics contribute to efficient computation and optimal information propagation. However, it remains unclear how neocortex maintains this asynchronous spiking regime. Here we algorithmically construct spiking neural network models, each composed of 5000 neurons. Network construction synthesized topological statistics from neocortex with a set of objective functio

A novel detection mechanism against malicious attacks by using spatio and temporal topology information.

This paper aims at addressing the detection of false data attacks (FDAs) in power system. While improving the operation of the power system, the integration of multi-layered cyber-physical networks poses huge security risks. In particular, the FDAs can fool the Chi-square detector-based detection mechanism by manipulating communication layer data. For this reason, this paper focuses on proposing a novel spatial-temporal features-based detection framework against false data attacks (FDAs). The proposed detection framework consists of two steps as follows: Kepler Optimization Algorithm (KOA)-con

Brain structural and functional abnormalities in mood disorders: implications for neurocircuitry models of depression.

The neural networks that putatively modulate aspects of normal emotional behavior have been implicated in the pathophysiology of mood disorders by converging evidence from neuroimaging, neuropathological and lesion analysis studies. These networks involve the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) and closely related areas in the medial and caudolateral orbital cortex (medial prefrontal network), amygdala, hippocampus, and ventromedial parts of the basal ganglia, where alterations in grey matter volume and neurophysiological activity are found in cases with recurrent depressive episodes. Such finding

Glutamate injury-induced epileptogenesis in hippocampal neurons: an in vitro model of stroke-induced "epilepsy".

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Stroke is the major cause of acquired epilepsy. The mechanisms of ischemia-induced epileptogenesis are not understood, but glutamate is associated with both ischemia-induced injury and epileptogenesis in several models. The objective of this study was to develop an in vitro model of epileptogenesis induced by glutamate injury in hippocampal neurons as observed during stroke. METHODS: Primary hippocampal cultures were exposed to 5 micromol/L glutamate for various durations. Whole-cell current clamp electrophysiology was used to monitor the acute effects of glutamate on

Brain network dynamics during rumination relate to relapse of depression.

BACKGROUND: Rumination is a maladaptive cognitive style and a risk factor for relapse of depression. However, the clinically relevant pattern of dynamic network reconfiguration during rumination in remitted depression and its implication in relapse remained unclear. METHODS: We employed a rumination induction neuroimaging paradigm in which subjects would be guided into an active rumination state and a distraction state. Forty-two patients with remitted depression were involved. Participants underwent assessments of rumination behavior and imaging tasks, and were then monitored for two year to

Independence and coherence in temporal sequence computation across the fronto-parietal network.

Time processing requires distributed and coordinated cortical dynamics, yet how multiple brain areas flexibly switch between coherent and independent temporal representations remains unclear. Using mesoscale two-photon calcium imaging, we simultaneously recorded neuronal populations in the secondary motor cortex and posterior parietal cortex of mice performing a novel alternating-interval timing task. Both areas encoded elapsed time through similar high-dimensional sequential activity, and decoding analyses revealed both coherent temporal errors shared across areas and independent errors confi

Deep learning captures the effect of epistasis in multifactorial diseases.

BACKGROUND: Polygenic risk score (PRS) prediction is widely used to assess the risk of diagnosis and progression of many diseases. Routinely, the weights of individual SNPs are estimated by the linear regression model that assumes independent and linear contribution of each SNP to the phenotype. However, for complex multifactorial diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and others, association between individual SNPs and disease could be non-linear due to epistatic interactions. The aim of the presented study is to explore the power of non-linear machine

Learning to Produce Syllabic Speech Sounds via Reward-Modulated Neural Plasticity.

At around 7 months of age, human infants begin to reliably produce well-formed syllables containing both consonants and vowels, a behavior called canonical babbling. Over subsequent months, the frequency of canonical babbling continues to increase. How the infant's nervous system supports the acquisition of this ability is unknown. Here we present a computational model that combines a spiking neural network, reinforcement-modulated spike-timing-dependent plasticity, and a human-like vocal tract to simulate the acquisition of canonical babbling. Like human infants, the model's frequency of cano

Exploring the thalamus: a crucial hub for brain function and communication in patients with bulimia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Bulimia nervosa (BN) is an eating disorder characterized by recurrent binge eating and compensatory behaviors. The thalamus plays a crucial role in the neural circuitry related to eating behavior and needs to be further explored in BN. METHODS: In this study, 49 BN patients and 44 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. We applied the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation to investigate regional brain activity in the thalamus and functional connectivity (FC) to examine the synchronization of activity between thalamic subregions and other brain regions in both groups. Character-level linguistic biomarkers for precision assessment of cognitive decline: a symbolic recurrence approach.

Early-stage Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains difficult to assess using conventional linguistic or cognitive assessments, which often overlook subtle and individualized disruptions in speech. In this work, we propose a novel biomarker discovery framework that leverages fine-grained, character-level information from speech transcripts to capture these early cognitive changes. By encoding transcripts symbolically at the character level and applying recurrence quantification analysis (RQA), we generate interpretable recurrence plots that reveal temporal dynamics in speech patterns such as pauses,

Integrating physiological signals for enhanced sleep apnea diagnosis with SleepNet.

Sleep apnea, a prevalent respiratory disorder, poses significant health risks, including cardiovascular complications and behavioral issues, if left untreated. Traditional diagnostic methods like polysomnography, although effective, are often expensive and inconvenient. SleepNet addresses these issues by introducing a new multimodal approach tailored for precise sleep apnea detection. At its core, the framework utilizes a fusion of one-dimensional convolutional neural networks (1D-CNN) and bidirectional gated recurrent units (Bi-GRU) to analyze single-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings, y
