The presence of inverted acoustic reflex (IAR) was observed in patients with surgically-confirmed otosclerosis. The characteristics of intensity, stimuli, and thresholds were analyzed. IAR was found in 90% of the patients stimulated on the same side at 110 dB HL with 500, 1000, and 2000-Hz frequencies. The motor response pattern of the audiogenic startle reflex was studied in 15 Tourette's syndrome (TS) patients and 15 normal, age-matched control subjects, using auditory stimuli at 88 and 114 dB. VOR parameters were compared in subjects at the extremes of the seasickness susceptibility scale. Thirty-nine subjects highly susceptible to seasickness and 30 nonsusceptible subjects participated in the study. The VOR was evaluated by the Sinusoidal Harmonic Acceleration (SHA) test at frequencies of 0.01, 0.02, 0.04, 0.08, and 0.16 Hz. Twenty-nine patients who eventually had a diagnosis of reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) following total knee replacement were treated with lumbar sympathetic blocks with local anesthetic. The diagnosis was made based on the complaint of constant pain unrelated to physical activity in the absence of overt sepsis or implant loosening. We report 4 patients with reflex sympathetic dystrophy that occurred while they were receiving AEDs.
