Treatment of a retarded child's faeces smearing and coprophagic behaviour.

The daily rearrangement of a profoundly retarded child's routine shower was effective in eliminating his low-frequency faeces smearing and coprophagic behaviour during the late afternoon/early evening part of the day. The effects appeared to generalise such that both types of behaviour were reduced at other times of the day and night. These results are discussed in terms of a social learning framework. A model for analysing the motivations and reinforcing conditions for rectal digging, coprophagy, and smearing faeces is also presented.

Gender differences in use and expectancies of e-cigarettes: Online survey results.

INTRODUCTION: Given the rapid increase in e-cigarette use, it is important to understand factors that may contribute to their initiation and maintenance. Because gender differences in tobacco use, product preferences, and expectancies are well established, similar gender differences may exist with e-cigarettes. The aim of this study was to identify gender differences among e-cigarette users in patterns of use, reasons for initiation and maintenance, and outcome expectancies regarding e-cigarettes. METHODS: Participants (N=1815) completed an online survey from August through November, 2013. We

Synthetic love in the digital age: AI-mediated emotional investment and gendered romantic dependence.

Digital technology has transformed romantic relationships, influencing men's and women's emotional investment differently. Drawing on "Romantic Relationships Matter More to Men than to Women," this commentary examines how artificial intelligence (AI)-driven dating, social and virtual platforms reshape partner search and mourning. It analyses synthetic love-from digital mediation to AI companions-arguing that these technologies may reinforce male emotional dependency and heighten post-breakup vulnerability.

Rats choose alcohol over social reward in an operant choice procedure.

The interaction between social factors and alcohol addiction is complex, with potential for both positive and negative contributions to drug use and abstinence. Positive social connections are an important component in successful abstinence, and yet the social context of alcohol use can also lead to relapse. Recently it was shown that rats overwhelmingly choose social reward over methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin in a discrete choice procedure, and that prolonged choice for social reward attenuates incubation of drug craving. The extent to which this effect generalises to rats trained to se

Social suffering and caregiver burden in The Brothers Karamazov: the story of Captain Snegiryov.

This article offers a critical literary analysis of The Brothers Karamazov through the lens of literary humanism, focusing on dimensions of social suffering and caregiver burden in end-of-life contexts. These themes are examined through the story of Captain Snegiryov and his family, key figures in Dostoevsky's narrative. By analysing the captain's experience as a caregiver for his gravely ill son in the context of extreme poverty, this study highlights four central aspects: (1) social suffering within the framework of total pain, (2) the caregiver burden, (3) neglect by healthcare systems and

Community-I nitiated Pilot Program "My Baby's Breath" to Reduce Prenatal Alcohol Use.

Prenatal alcohol use puts mothers and their children at risk for complications during pregnancy, birth, and the neonatal periods. This paper describes a currently implemented community-based pilot program to reduce drinking among pregnant mothers. The program has worked in collaboration with case managers from Crow Wing County Social Services. Participants were required to provide daily breath samples with monetary incentives on alcohol-negative sample submissions. The program has treated four pregnant mothers so far, with an average of 94 percent compliance rate and no alcohol-positive breath

Beyond the Clinic Walls: Nurse-Led Socialised Care and Health Equity for Vulnerable Populations in Australia.

AIM: This paper critically examines the Australian College of Nursing's proposed socialised healthcare model and the potential of nurse-led socialised care as a paradigm shift for addressing the intersection of medical need and social distress among vulnerable populations experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, poverty, and other disadvantage. APPROACH: This is a position paper. It offers a theoretical commentary and critical reading that situates the proposed socialised healthcare model within frameworks of social determinants of health, health equity, and socially responsive care deli

Social bonds and helping dynamics promote cooperation in nested group populations.

Most studies on the evolution of cooperation focus on single-group settings, whereas real-world interactions often occur within nested group structures and are shaped by pre-existing social relationships. The coexistence of cross-level public-goods allocation, dynamically evolving social bonds, and heterogeneous helping responses creates multiple feedback channels, making the stability of cooperation dependent on both group structure and relationship dynamics. To address these limitations, this study develops a two-stage game model that incorporates social bonds to characterize relationship st

GABA-A receptor signaling in the anterior cingulate cortex modulates aggression and anxiety-related behaviors in socially isolated mice.

Dysfunctional modulation of brain circuits that regulate the emotional response to potentially threatening stimuli is associated to an inappropriate representation of the emotional salience. Reduced top-down control by cortical areas is assumed to underlie several behavioral abnormalities including aggression and anxiety related behaviors. Previous studies have identified disrupted GABA signaling in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) as a possible mechanism underlying the top-down regulation of aggression and anxiety. In this study, we investigate a role for GABA-A receptor in the ACC in the

Short-term social memory deficits in adult female mice exposed to tannery effluent and possible mechanism of action.

The accumulated organic residues in tannery-plant courtyards are an eating attraction to small rodents; however, the contact of these animals with these residues may change their social behavior. Thus, the aim of the present study is to investigate whether the exposure to tannery effluent (TE) can damage the social recognition memory of female Swiss mice, as well as to assess whether vitamin C supplementation could provide information about how TE constituents can damage these animals' memory. We have observed that resident females exposed to TE (without vitamin supplementation) did not explor

A behavioral economic analysis of the effect of next-day responsibilities on drinking.

Approximately 37% of college students report heavy episodic drinking (5 or more drinks in an occasion for men and 4 or more for women) in the past month. This pattern of drinking is often associated with high blood alcohol levels, accidents, injuries, and negative social and academic outcomes. There is a need for novel theoretical approaches to guide prevention efforts. Behavioral economics emphasizes the role of contextual determinants, such as drink price and the presence and amount of alternative reinforcement as determinants of drinking levels and has received strong empirical support in b

Contextual control of delay discounting by pathological gamblers.

The present study demonstrated the relative impact of gambling and nongambling contexts on the degree of delay discounting by pathological gamblers. We used a delay-discounting task with 20 pathological gamblers in and out of the natural context in which they regularly gambled. For 16 of the 20 participants, it appeared that the difference of context altered the subjective value of delayed rewards, thereby producing relative changes in delay-discounting rates that were generally consistent with a hyperbolic model of intertemporal choice. The current data suggest that empirically derived k valu

The effects of implementing program consequences with a group of individuals who engaged in sensory maintained hand mouthing.

This study evaluated whether a multicomponent treatment package could be successfully implemented with individuals who engage in self-injurious hand mouthing maintained by sensory consequences in the context of both individual and small group settings. Three ambulatory individuals with profound mental retardation participated on an individual basis followed by treatment within a group setting. Generalization of the intervention results to the natural living environment was then analyzed. Using an ABAB experimental design, the effectiveness of brief response interruption followed by the introdu

Positive group efficacy in adolescent treatment.

The Positive Group as a treatment modality was evaluated in a pilot study with 24 adolescents over an eight-week period. This technique requires adolescents to make positive statements about themselves and others in the group. Each adolescent must also verbally acknowledge the compliment paid him. Proscribed are all negative comments. The results were evaluated primarily through clinical observation and anecdotal reports as given by counselors, nursing staff, program coordinators, and attending psychiatrists. The results support incorporating the Positive Group Therapy into both inpatient and

The impact of sex, species, environmental context, and alternative reinforcers in animal models of cocaine use disorders.

Cocaine use disorder (CUD) remains a major public health challenge with no effective pharmacological treatments to date. Although extensive preclinical research using animal models has advanced our understanding, these findings have yet to translate into clinical success. This review highlights key independent variables that should be incorporated to improve the validity and translational relevance of animal studies. The discussion is organized around three primary domains: the agent; the host; and the environment. Most studies in this review focus on cocaine as the agent and host factors such

Genesis and dissemination of a controversial disease: Chronic Lyme.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the role of the internet and cognitive biases in the controversy surrounding chronic Lyme disease. The attribution of chronic but aspecific symptoms to Lyme borreliosis is a source of worldwide controversy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Some patients attribute their aspecific symptoms to Lyme borreliosis even though, in fact, they have a functional somatic syndrome. RESULTS: These patients' diagnostic and therapeutic wandering contributes to the above attribution and to their suffering. The Internet has deregulated the information market. Cognitive confirmation bias contribut

Dog Phobia Intervention: A Case Study in Improvement of Physiological and Behavioral Symptoms in A Child with Intellectual Disability.

Background: Children with intellectual disability are at risk for anxiety disorders involving intense physiological reactions and risky behavioral responses. Interventions have been identified in this field; however, assessment of underlying anxiety is limited and flawed.Method: We implemented a single-subject case study using differential reinforcement to treat dog phobia in a boy with intellectual disability. We recorded elopement and compliance with goals and measured physiological expressions of stress: galvanic skin response, heart rate variability, temperature, and latency to calm down.R

Comparing the effects of differential reinforcement of other behavior and response-cost contingencies on tics in youth with Tourette syndrome.

Tics are rapid, repetitive, stereotyped movements or vocalizations that arise from neurobiological dysfunction and are influenced by environmental factors. Although persons with tic disorders often experience aversive social reactions in response to tics, little is known about the behavioral effects of such consequences. Along several dimensions, the present study compared the effects of two treatments on tics: response cost (RC) and differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO). Four children with Tourette syndrome were exposed to free-to-tic baseline, DRO, RC, and quasibaseline rebound
