The effect of crimidin on reproduction in hens.

The use of rodenticides as cereal baits involves the risk of intoxications of birds. The question as to whether the daily administration of sublethal doses of the B6-antagonistic crimidin would influence reproduction in hens has been investigated in two experimental series.

Endocrine Disorders and Their Effect on Equine Reproduction.

Continuing the reproductive potential of aged horses is a request many equine practitioners may receive. Reproductive performance may be impacted by a host of age-related comorbidities such as the endocrinopathies, pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction, and equine metabolic syndrome. While limited information is known, reproductive effects described may include irregular estrous cycles, development of anovulatory follicles, increased incidence of uterine infection, or generalized infertility. Accurate diagnosis, management strategies, and monitoring remain critical for improving quality of lif

Irisin as a metabolic regulator of male reproduction.

Obesity and metabolic syndrome are major contributors to male infertility. These conditions disrupt the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis and compromise testicular steroidogenesis and spermatogenesis through mechanisms that include altered aromatase activity, insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, and oxidative stress. Irisin, an exercise-induced myokine, has emerged as a metabolic signal with potential effects on male reproductive function. This review summarizes irisin biology, proposed mechanisms of action, and putative functions of irisin in male reproduction, with emphasis on o…

Functional versatility of synergid cells in plant reproduction.

In flowering plants (angiosperms), the Polygonum-type embryo sac accounts for approximately 70% of the female gametophytes. It contains three antipodal cells, one central cell, one egg cell, and two synergid cells. Apart from the female gamete cells, the synergid cells play a key role in sexual reproduction. This review traces the origin and research history of synergid cells and summarizes the latest research progress in understanding their core functions in the angiosperm-specific siphonogamy. In particular, we discuss the diverse functions of synergid cells in pollen tube guidance, pollen t…

Bottlenecked reproduction enables cooperating bacteria to purge cheaters.

Bacteria engage in social cooperations to ensure survival and reproduction in adverse environments. Numerous bacterial sociality genes (SGs) are dedicated to such cooperations. Mutant bacteria carrying loss-of-function mutations (LOFMs) in SGs are frequently shielded from purifying selection by cooperative wild-type peers. Yet, in absence of active purging, such mutants would persist and proliferate in bacterial populations, ultimately crippling cooperation. We propose the hypothesis of bottlenecked reproduction at foci of cooperation (BRFC) to address this problem. This hypothesis stipulates …

The role of extracellular vesicles in animal reproduction.

Infertility affects approximately one in six couples worldwide and remains a multifactorial condition influenced by genetic, physiological, and environmental factors. Despite remarkable advances in assisted reproductive technologies (ART), current therapeutic approaches often fail to address the underlying molecular mechanisms contributing to infertility. In recent years, extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as key mediators of intercellular communication, capable of transferring bioactive molecules such as proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids between cells within the reproductive system.

Data assimilation for estimating time-varying reproduction numbers.

The time-varying basic reproduction number, R0(t), is a key epidemiological metric that quantifies the transmissibility of an infectious pathogen at time t. Accurate estimation and uncertainty quantification of R0(t) are crucial for understanding disease dynamics and informing public health decision-making. In this study, we evaluate six methods for estimating R0(t) using synthetic data generated from a stochastic Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) model with imposed changes to pathogen transmissibility and empirical COVID-19 case data. The methods include ensemble filter methods and inflati…

Developmental, regenerative, and behavioral dynamics in acoel reproduction.

Acoel worms belong to an enigmatic and understudied animal lineage in the phylum Xenacoelomorpha. Sparse taxonomic and histological work suggests that these worms exhibit a diversity of reproductive anatomies and likely a corresponding diversity in reproductive behavior. Here, we study the reproductive life history of the three-banded panther worm Hofstenia miamia, an acoel that is emerging as a lab-tractable model system. Using confocal microscopy and histology, we describe H. miamia's reproductive organs, identifying structures previously unknown in acoels. Following a cohort of worms from z

The Use of Stem Cells in Assisted Reproduction.

Background: Infertility remains a significant global health challenge, affecting approximately 15% of couples worldwide. In vitro fertilization (IVF) has transformed reproductive medicine; however, challenges such as low success rates in older patients, ovarian insufficiency, endometrial dysfunction, and male infertility continue to limit outcomes. Objective: This review aims to summarize the principles of IVF and explore the potential role of stem cells in enhancing IVF outcomes, with particular attention to applications in both women and men, as well as the accompanying ethical consideration

Narrative futures of pregnancy sickness: reproduction, disability, animality.

In Sarah Hall's short story 'Mrs Fox', a man wakes to find his wife, Sophia, vomiting. When Sophia's nausea continues, he imagines her wasting from a rare cancer; instead, she mutates into a fox and, after a brief captivity at their home, leaves him for the woods, only to reappear months later with a litter he claims as his progeny. Sophia's sickness is belatedly revealed as nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP), and her metamorphosis from human into fox seems to have been triggered by conception. NVP, or 'morning sickness' as it is colloquially known, tends to appear in culture as plot revea

Endocrine Disrupting Agents: Toxicological Aspects on Male Reproduction.

In the quest to enhance food production and quality of life, a variety of chemical agents that can protect crops and prevent vector borne diseases have emerged and are used indiscriminately by humans. Thus, they end up in the physiological systems through various routes. The male reproductive system is one of the highly sensitive physiological systems, despite having the blood-testis and blood-epididymis barrier. In this review, we provide a comprehensive analyses by systematically identifying specific studies that reported the relationship between endocrine disruptors and their toxicity on th

Advanced assisted reproduction technologies in endangered mammalian species.

A new synergistic approach of classical conservation strategies combined with advanced assisted reproduction technologies (aART) allows for protection and rescue of endangered keystone species at the brink of extinction, which can help to safeguard complex ecosystems. Reproduction biology and management in mammal species is not only challenging in regards to their diverging sizes, anatomy, and often unknown physiology; it also requires customized training or chemical restraint protocols for safe handling. Besides these general challenges, there are several new assisted reproduction techniques …
