The child opportunity index and developmental outcomes in early childhood.

INTRODUCTION: Neighborhood-level opportunity plays a critical but underexplored role in shaping a child's early developmental outcomes. We hypothesized that higher neighborhood opportunities would be associated with higher developmental outcomes in early childhood. METHODS: This observational cohort study included children from Northern Virginia, born between 2020 to 2023. At age 2-3 years, children completed the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition (BSID-III). Zip-code level neighborhood opportunity scores were derived from the Child Opportunity Index (COI). Associa

Association between hypertension prevalence and neighborhood characteristics in Japan using combined claims data and geographic information systems: a neighborhood correlation study from LIFE Study.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is prevalent and is influenced by modifiable factors. Increasing attention has focused on community-based health promotion. However, studies on the relationship between neighborhood characteristics and hypertension prevalence are limited. This study combined medical claims and geographic information system data to identify neighborhood characteristics associated with hypertension. METHODS: The study population included participants enrolled in the National Health Insurance or Medical Care System for the Elderly in both 2017 and 2021, and their 2021 data were aggregate

Islands in an Obesogenic Ocean: A Multiscale Spatial Analysis of School Neighborhood Food Environments in Michigan.

This study examines the retail food environment surrounding public schools in Michigan using a multiscale, multidimensional framework. A cross-sectional spatial analysis integrates relative healthfulness (modified Retail Food Environment Index, mRFEI), availability (outlet counts), and accessibility (network-based walking time) across school districts, census tracts, block groups, and school-centered buffers. The analysis includes 3530 public schools, 7680 fast food restaurants, and 2065 convenience stores. Results show pronounced spatial heterogeneity and clustering of unhealthful outlets (Ne

Neighborhood social environment and physical activity among persons living with dementia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Physical activity (PA) helps delay the progression of cognitive and functional decline among persons living with dementia. Neighborhood social environments are well-known to support or hinder PA among older adults, but their associations with PA among persons living with dementia remain poorly understood. This study examines how neighborhood characteristics (affluence, deprivation, safety, friends, relatives, cohesion, and disorder) relate to PA among U.S. community-dwelling persons living with dementia. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We used 2006-2018 Health and Reti

How walkable are neighbourhoods in Oman? Perceived and objective assessment of built environment.

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity remains common in Oman despite national strategies to promote physical activity and active transport. AIM: To compare perceived and objectively measured walkability features between old and new residential neighbourhoods in Nizwa and Barka, Oman. METHODS: Between June and August 2023, we surveyed 374 adults from 4 neighbourhoods and assessed their perceived and objective walkability using the Physical Activity Neighborhood Environment Scale and the Microscale Audit of Pedestrian Streetscapes. Data were analysed using SPSS version 28 and walkability scores were

Consideration of social and environmental determinants of maternal and perinatal health in the geographic information systems era: a primer.

Social and environmental exposures influence health outcomes across the lifespan, including during the perinatal period. Negative exposures such as neighborhood deprivation, air pollution, and violence, as well as positive exposures such as greenspace, neighborhood cohesion, and walkability, interact to affect many complex health outcomes. Understanding the impact of neighborhood environmental exposures on health is required to design effective interventions to improve health impacts of the places shaping people's daily lives. In the era of geographic information systems (GIS), analyses deline

The influence of perceived neighborhood disorder on HIV care-related decisions: A qualitative study.

The study used a qualitative approach to explore how perceived neighborhood disorder influences health-related decisions among people living with HIV. Recognizing the crucial role environmental factors play in health behaviors, this research seeks to bridge a gap in understanding how neighborhood dynamics affect individuals with HIV. A qualitative research design with interpretive qualitative analysis was used. The interview guide and analysis were guided by the Broken Windows Theory and Social Cognitive Theory, enabling an exploration of the intersection between environmental perceptions and

Association between neighborhood walkability and physical activity in a community-based twin sample.

We investigated associations between neighborhood walkability and physical activity using twins (5477 monozygotic and same-sex dizygotic pairs) as "quasi-experimental" controls of genetic and shared environment (familial) factors that would otherwise confound exposure-outcome associations. Walkability comprised intersection density, population density, and destination accessibility. Outcomes included self-reported weekly minutes of neighborhood walking and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and days per week using transit services (eg, bus, commuter rail). There was a positive assoc

Neighborhood-Level Socioeconomic Vulnerability and Perioperative Complications in Hysterectomy for Benign Indications.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between neighborhood-level socioeconomic vulnerability, measured by the VVI (Vizient Vulnerability Index) and perioperative complications after hysterectomy for benign conditions. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed patients who underwent hysterectomy for benign indications (2015-2024) using the Vizient Clinical Database. Patients were categorized into VVI quartiles (quartile 1, least vulnerable; quartile 4, most vulnerable) based on census tract data across nine socioeconomic domains: public safety, transportation, social cohesion, environ

Structural Racism, Geographies of Opportunity, and Maternal Health Inequities: A Dynamic Conceptual Framework.

Addressing the grave racial inequities in maternal health requires a new generation of research that better operationalizes root causes of these outcomes. Recent frameworks improving the conceptualization of structural racism have illuminated the need for better conceptual clarity when investigating neighborhoods as a site of structural marginalization for Black birthing populations as well. In particular, better conceptualization of dynamic feedback in how neighborhoods are constructed and experienced, especially as they embed vicious cycles of place-based racialization, is integral to produc

The embodiment of exclusionary displacement pressure: Intersections of housing insecurity and mental health in a Hispanic/Latinx immigrant neighborhood.

Gentrification, growing income inequality, urban development, and the affordable housing crisis necessitate understanding the impact of the concern of displacement on health - prior to or even in the absence of a displacement event. In this paper, I use the term "exclusionary displacement pressure" to unify the literature on exclusionary displacement and displacement pressure, highlighting the disproportionate and inequitable impacts of displacement pressure among communities of color. Through following 35 residents over 2.5-years (2019-2022) in one predominantly low-income Hispanic/Latinx imm

Poverty and neighborhood opportunity effects on neonate DNAm developmental age.

BACKGROUND: Children from families with low socioeconomic status (SES), as determined by income, experience several negative outcomes, such as higher rates of newborn mortality and behavioral issues. Moreover, associations between DNA methylation and low income or poverty status are evident beginning at birth, suggesting prenatal influences on offspring development. Recent evidence suggests neighborhood opportunities may protect against some of the health consequences of living in low income households. The goal of this study was to assess whether neighborhood opportunities moderate associatio

Neighborhood assets, parenting, and child disruptive behavior in low-income Black families.

Neighborhood assets, such as access to recreational facilities, density of residence, and safety, were examined in relation to parenting and disruptive behavior in early childhood. Examining data from a low-income Black preschool sample, this study investigated how self-reported neighborhood assets and observed parenting behaviors interactively predict observed disruptive behavior in children. Findings revealed a significant relationship between parenting and child behavior, where parenting with high sensitivity and engagement and parenting with less verbal and physical interference and intrus

Neighborhood-level Disparities in Achievement of Social Continence Among School-aged Children With Anorectal Malformations: A Single-center Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Fecal incontinence is a common problem for children with repaired anorectal malformations (ARM) and has significant implications for initiating school. While sex, anatomy, and medical comorbidities are known to influence continence outcomes, the impact of socioeconomic factors and neighborhood-level disadvantage are less well understood. METHODS: We performed a single-center retrospective review of all school-aged (5-18 years) children with ARM at a longitudinal pediatric surgery clinic. Demographic, clinical, and socioeconomic variables were abstracted via chart review and geocod

Despite popular intuition, positive world beliefs poorly reflect several objective indicators of privilege, including wealth, health, sex, and neighborhood safety.

OBJECTIVES: We tested whether generalized beliefs that the world is safe, abundant, pleasurable, and progressing (termed "primal world beliefs") are associated with several objective measures of privilege. METHODS: Three studies (N = 16,547) tested multiple relationships between indicators of privilege-including socioeconomic status, health, sex, and neighborhood safety-and relevant world beliefs, as well as researchers and laypeople's expectations of these relationships. Samples were mostly from the USA and included general population samples (Study 2) as well as focused samples of academic

Decline in co-residence of parents and children among older Kuwaiti men and women: what are the significant correlates?

A trend towards decline in co-residence with children is apparent in several countries while it is absent in others. The objectives of this paper are to address the patterns of co-residence with children among older Kuwaiti men and women aged 60+ and to assess the determinants of such patterns within the context of rapid socioeconomic changes occurring in the country (n = 1588). The data for this paper were collected as part of a household survey on the psychosocial health and disability among 2487 older Kuwaitis aged 50+. Forward step-wise logistic regression was run to assess the significant
