This study assesses chromosomal structural changes (CSCs) studied by conventional lymphocyte cultures and banding techniques in 79 hemophilic patients with hemarthrosis treated with radioactive synoviorthesis, 31 hemophilic patients with hemarthrosis not treated by this procedure, and 110 nonhemophilic patients matched by age and sex (control group). In 14 patients treated with 198Au (group A), premalignant CSCs and nonspecific CSCs were found, respectively, in 1.69% and 17.23% of metaphases. We devised a method of determining selenium using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS). Multiple sensitivity to metals is often seen in humans. This may be due to cross-reactivity or to multiple sensitization. The pattern of cross-reactivity to some metal compounds was studied, using the guinea pig maximization test method. Animals were induced with K2Cr2O7 and CoCl2, respectively, and then challenged with K2Cr2O7, CoCl2, NiSO4, PdCl2 and RhCl3. No simultaneous reactivity was recorded. Occupational exposure to complex platinum salts is a well-known cause of occupational asthma. Although there is evidence that platinum refinery workers may also be sensitized to other precious metals, such as palladium or rhodium, no instances of occupational asthma due to an isolated sensitization to palladium have been reported. From 1964 to 1976 a number of 131 patients, suffering from melanoma of the choroid have been treated with 106Ru/106Rh beta-ray applicators. In 81 cases (61.8%) this treatment has been successful. 26 eyes (19.9%) had to be enucleated in spite of the irradiation. 24 patients (18.3%) died, 13 of them of metastases.
