The flaviviral tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is a human pathogen having significant impact on public health. The geographical distribution of TBEV and TBEV-like viruses is increasing, which makes it important to characterise the natural virus populations. We conducted a prospective study to estimate the Lyme borreliosis incidence in two rural French departments, Meuse and Puy-de-Dôme. Concurrently, we investigated the prevalence of ticks infected with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (sl) and Anaplasma phagocytophilum. We studied the presence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in Ixodes ricinus ticks collected in woodland areas in the vicinity of Weilburg (Hesse, Germany). Ticks (n = 13,347) were collected in five localities in 1996 and were fixed in 70% ethanol. In this study, the effects of iron (Fe) nanoparticles (NPs) on Fe and heavy metal accumulations by castor (Ricinus communis L.) plants were investigated. By amplification and sequencing of 18S rRNA gene fragments, Hepatozoon spp. DNA was detected in 0.08 % (4/5057) and 0.04 % (1/2473) of questing Ixodes ricinus ticks from Slovakia and Czech Republic, respectively. The castor bean tick Ixodes ricinus has been found to be the main vector for Lyme borreliosis spirochetes and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in Central Europe. 1646 I. ricinus ticks from Hanover, a city located in Northern Germany, were examined for infection with A. phagocytophilum and coinfection with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (sl) to obtain so far missing prevalence data for this region. We report the finding of Babesia EU1 and Babesia microti in Ixodes ricinus ticks in the Netherlands. During 5 years of surveillance between 2003 and 2007, 1488 ticks were collected in a dune forest area near the North Sea and were screened for Babesia infections.
