BACKGROUND: Exposures to several dusts and fibers (DFs) have been established or suggested as etiologic factors for lung cancer.
METHODS: To investigate lung cancer risk in relation to exposure to DFs, we identified 540 pathologically-diagnosed lung cancer cases and 582 controls from the 1993-1998 autopsy records of the 88 hospitals of Leningrad Province, Russia. Lifetime job-specific exposure measurements were available for 15 organic, 15 man-made and 28 natural-inorganic agents.

A total of 739 taiga ticks of ixodes persulcatus species, obtained in the recreational zone of St. Petersburg, were studied for the presence of Babesia sp. with polymerase chain reaction. All these ticks underwent the preliminary examination for the presence of Borrelia (3 species), Ehrlichia (2 species) and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus. In 7 cases Babesia were detected among 413 ticks containing other pathogens. Among 326 ticks no Babesia were detected, as well as no other pathogens. Here we consider cost-effective solutions of emission control measures in Finland and the nearby areas of Estonia, St. Petersburg region, Karelia and Kola, in order to limit the acidifying deposition in Finland. In the study, the emission control costs of SO2, NOx and NH3 are assessed for the areas studied and an optimisation model developed for calculation of cost-optimal deposition control policies. Clinical and laboratory data are available on affection of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) in 27 patients with Lyme-borreliosis (LB) in the endemic region of Russia. PNS disorders arose early, 88.9% of the patients had them within one month of the disease. 9 (37.5%) patients had meningoradiculoneuropathy (MRN) which emerged in the acute period in 77.8% of the patients.
