Integrative analysis of morphological, transcriptomic, and metabolomic approaches to uncover the function of flavonoids in the salt stress response of Alhagi camelorum.

Salinity or salt stress significantly influences plant productivity, growth, and development, including that of Alhagi camelorum. In the current study, transcriptomic characterization discovered DEGs among the samples of four paired groups. During the metabolomic profiling, the top ten identified primary metabolites are amino acids and their derivatives, fatty acids, alcohols and amines, lipids, GP, heterocyclic compounds, and flavonoids. An analysis of comparative metabolic pathways and KEGG enrichment indicated that salt stress disrupts the biosynthesis of sesquiterpenoids, triterpenoids, an

Discovery and profiling of efficient microbial strains for struvite biomineralization in high-salinity wastewater.

The microbial mineralization of struvite from high-salinity wastewater offers a promising approach for the simultaneous removal and recovery of phosphorus and nitrogen. Fish processing wastewater (FPW) is characterized by high organic pollutant loads, containing heavy metal copper ions, and variable salinity levels ranging from 2 to 21% NaCl. Such fluctuations in salinity can affect the efficiency of struvite biomineralization. The presence of heavy metal copper ions will also further restrict the function of the struvite-producing strains under high-salt conditions. This study focuses on scre

Sodium stress-induced oxidative damage and antioxidant responses during grain filling in Indica rice.

Sodium treatment caused the sodium ion accumulation at the milk stage of immature rice grains which in turn triggered the overproduction of reactive oxygen species and oxidative damage. The tolerant cultivar showed an enhanced antioxidative response and induced expressions of OsNHX and OsHKT ion-transporters. Sodium chloride-(NaCl) induced soil salinity is a major constraint hindering global rice production. Amongst its constituent ions, sodium (Na+) is known to be the main driver of toxicity under salt stress. The present investigation aims to measure the impacts of excess Na+ during rice gra

Increased population epigenetic diversity of the clonal invasive species Alternanthera philoxeroides in response to salinity stress.

Epigenetic modification can change the pattern of gene expression without altering the underlying DNA sequence, which may be adaptive in clonal plant species. In this study, we used MSAP (methylation-sensitive amplification polymorphism) to examine epigenetic variation in Alternanthera philoxeroides, a clonal invasive species, in response to salinity stress. We found that salinity stress could significantly increase the level of epigenetic diversity within a population. This effect increased with increasing stress duration and was specific to particular genotypes. In addition, the epigenetic m

Hydrogen sulfide improves photosynthetic efficiency by regulating light energy dissipation and reversible phosphorylation of thylakoid proteins in rice under salt stress.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been regarded as a small gasotransmitter associated with physiological and biochemical regulation in plant respon … upercomplexes and PSI-PSII dimers. Collectively, our results demonstrate that H2S can contribute to salt tolerance of photosynthetic machinery by optimizing electron transport efficiency and the coordinated regulation of PSII protein phosphorylation in rice.

Salt, inflammatory joint disease, and autoimmunity.

Salt is a vital nutrient. Excess salt intake, however, has recently been blamed for triggering and/or worsening certain autoimmune diseases. In vitro, the cells involved in innate and adaptive immune responses exhibit an inflammatory profile when placed in hypertonic saline. More specifically, macrophages release increased amounts of proinflammatory cytokines, produce reactive oxygen species, and become capable of activating the inflammasome. T helper cells, via activation of serum and glucocorticoid-regulated kinase 1 (SGK1), overexpress IL-17A and IL-23R and differentiate into Th17 cells; wh

Salar del Hombre Muerto, source of lithium-tolerant bacteria.

The Salar del Hombre Muerto is a flat salt with great microbial activity despite the existing extreme conditions like high altitude, lack of water, low level of oxygen, high radiation and high concentration of sodium and lithium chloride. Despite these unfavorable conditions, we found microbial diversity with the presence of fungi, algae, and bacteria. From aqueous solutions and soil samples, a total of 238 bacteria were isolated and 186 of them were able to grow in the presence of salt. About 30% of the strains showed the ability to grow in solid medium proximally to a LiCl solution close to

Genome-Wide Identification of the TaBSK Gene Family and Its Salt-Responsive Expression Patterns in Wheat.

Brassinosteroid signaling kinases (BSKs) act as core signal transducers downstream of Brassinosteroid (BR) perception and integrate plant growth regulation with broad-spectrum biotic and abiotic stress tolerance. Despite well-established functional characterizations of BSK gene families in Arabidopsis thaliana and rice, comprehensive genome-wide profiling and salt response analysis of BSK homologs remain lacking in wheat. In this study, we systematically identified 18 TaBSK family members. Phylogenetic analysis separated wheat TaBSKs into three distinct evolutionary subgroups. The 18 TaBSK loc

Molecular characterization of Candida boidinii GTS1 and its role in yeast proliferation in the phyllosphere.

Gts1 is a pleiotropic regulator for stress response and metabolism in yeast. Here, we identified and characterized CbGTS1 from the methylotrophic yeast Candida boidinii. Deletion of CbGTS1 reduced yeast proliferation on plant leaves and decreased tolerance to high-salt stress. These findings demonstrate that CbGts1 contributes to yeast adaptation and survival under challenging phyllosphere environments.

Arylation of Click Triazoles with Diaryliodonium Salts.

A robust, selective, and highly efficient method for the preparation of 1,3,4-triaryl 1,2,3-triazolium salts has been developed. It features arylation of a click triazole with a diaryliodonium salt in the presence of a copper catalyst under neat conditions. The presence of pyridine functionality is tolerated, enabling the first access to key precursors of pyridyl-mesoionic carbene ligands. The method has been integrated into a one-pot protocol with terminal alkyne, sodium azide, and diaryliodonium salt as starting compounds.

HDA19-mediated deacetylation of histone H3.3 at lysines 27 and 36 regulates plant sensitivity to salt stress.

Plants survive extreme environments through rapid chromatin reprogramming, yet the epigenetic marks that confer stress resilience remain poorly understood. Histone deacetylase HDA19 is a key epigenetic regulator in Arabidopsis, and hda19-deficient mutants display tolerance to multiple abiotic stresses, including drought, heat, and salinity. Using lysine acetylome profiling, we identified a noncanonical K27/K36 diacetylation mark on histone H3.3, among nine H3 variants, as a specific substrate of HDA19. Under salinity stress, this mark decreased in wild-type plants but increased in hda19 mutant

The RNA m6A Methyltransferase PheMTA1 and PheMTA2 of Moso Bamboo Regulate Root Development and Resistance to Salt Stress in Plant.

As the most prevalent RNA modification in eukaryotes, N6-methyladenosine (m6A) plays a crucial role in regulating various biological processes in plants, including embryonic development and flowering. However, the function of m6A RNA methyltransferase in moso bamboo remains poorly understood. In this study, we identified two m6A methyltransferases in moso bamboo, PheMTA1 and PheMTA2. Overexpression of PheMTA1 and PheMTA2 significantly promoted root development and enhanced salt tolerance in rice. Using the HyperTRIBE method, we fused PheMTA1 and PheMTA2 with ADARcdE488Q and introduced them int…

A Soybean bZIP Transcription Factor GmbZIP19 Confers Multiple Biotic and Abiotic Stress Responses in Plant.

The basic leucine zipper (bZIP) is a plant-specific transcription factor family that plays crucial roles in response to biotic and abiotic stresses. However, little is known about the function of bZIP genes in soybean. In this study, we isolated a bZIP gene, GmbZIP19, from soybean. A subcellular localization study of GmbZIP19 revealed its nucleus localization. We showed that GmbZIP19 expression was significantly induced by ABA (abscisic acid), JA (jasmonic acid) and SA (salicylic acid), but reduced under salt and drought stress conditions. Further, GmbZIP19 overexpression Arabidopsis lines sho

Harnessing halophyte phytochemicals and biostimulants to enhance crop resilience under climate stress: a comprehensive review.

Global food security is increasingly compromised by the synergistic pressures of soil salinization and the climate-mediated proliferation of resilient agricultural pests and weeds. Halophytes, extremophile plants naturally adapted to high-salinity niches, represent an underexploited reservoir of bioactive compounds and microbial consortia with significant bioeconomic potential. This review synthesizes the multi-functional utility of halophyte-derived bioactive compounds in mitigating contemporary environmental stressors through two primary lenses. First, we discuss the biochemical efficacy of

Wheat salinity tolerance is enhanced by application of Bacillus megaterium or arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi via improving physio-biochemical and anatomical characteristics.

This study aimed to evaluate the role of Bacillus megaterium and Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) in increasing salt tolerance in wheat associated with physio-biochemical and anatomical characteristics. Results displayed that salinity stress (6 dS m-1 NaCl) significantly decreased (p ≤ 0.05) nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, chlorophyll a and b content, maximum quantum yield of PSII and relative water content (RWC) in both seasons. Additionally, the anatomical characteristics of flag leaf were harmfully affected. However, malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide (O2•-), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and …

Differences in growth and physiological and metabolic responses among Canadian native and hybrid willows (Salix spp.) under salinity stress.

Globally, soil salinization is becoming increasingly prevalent, due to local hydrogeologic phenomena, climate change and anthropogenic activities. This has significantly curtailed current world food production and limits future production potential. In the prairie region of North America, sulfate salts, rather than sodium chloride, are often the predominant cause of soil degradation. In order to amend soil quality, revegetate salt-affected sites and recover economic loss associated with soil salinization, the establishment of short-rotation coppice plantations with willows (Salix spp.) has bee

Evaluation of the halophyte Salsola soda as an alternative crop for saline soils high in selenium and boron.

Urbanization, industrial development, and intensive agriculture have caused soil contamination and land degradation in many areas of the world. Salinization is one important factor contributing to land degradation and it affects agricultural production and environmental quality. When salinization is combined with soil pollution by trace elements, as it occurs in many arid and semi-arid regions around the world, strategies to phyto-manage pollutants and sustain crop production need to be implemented. In this study, we present the case of saline soils in the West side of Central California which
