BACKGROUND: There are few reports of the association of other cancers with Ewing sarcoma in patients and their relatives. We use a resource combining statewide genealogy and cancer reporting to provide unbiased risks.
METHODS: Using a combined genealogy of 2.3 million Utah individuals and the Utah Cancer Registry (UCR), relative risks (RRs) for cancers of other sites were estimated in 143 Ewing sarcoma patients using a Cox proportional hazards model with matched controls; however, risks in relatives were estimated using internal cohort-specific cancer rates in first-, second-, and third-degre

BACKGROUND: Ewing sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor is a family of highly malignant proliferation of neuroectodermal origin, most often skeletal, adrenal localization is extremely rare. Only few cases have been reported in the literature. Classical management includes radical surgery with adjuvant chemotherapy or radiotherapy or both. This case report is the only one where recurrence was surgically removed, and it confirms the importance of adjuvant treatment, and the efficacy of neoadjuvant chemotherapy.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 23-year-old Moroccan woman presenting w

BACKGROUND: Primary Ewing's sarcoma originating in the pericranium is an extremely rare disease entity.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 9-year-old female patient was admitted to our department due to a left temporal subcutaneous mass. The mass was localized under the left temporal muscle and attached to the surface of the temporal bone. Head computed tomography revealed a mass with bony spicule formation on the temporal bone, however, it did not show bone destruction or intracranial invasion. F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography showed no lesions other than the mass on the temporal bone.

INTRODUCTION: Extra-skeletal Ewing's sarcomas are very rare lesions to the spine surgeon, with the intradural, extramedullary lesions being even rarer. Herein we present a patient with an intradural, extramedullary form of Ewing's sarcoma and review the relevant literature. The medical records, operative reports, radiographical studies and histological examinations of a single patient are retrospectively reviewed.
CASE REPORT: A 31-year old male presented with back-pain, right-leg progressive paraparesis, and inability to walk. Both motor and sensory disturbances were revealed on the right le

Ewing sarcomas/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (ES/pPNET) are extremely rare in the vulva. A review of the literature reveals only 14 previously reported possible cases. Here we reported a case of primary extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma (EES) of the vulva in a 37-year-old woman. Characteristic histologic features of ES/pPNET were present in this case, including a monomorphic population of small round blue cells with cytoplasmic glycogen confirmed by periodic acid-Schiff, membrane staining with CD99 and nuclear staining with FLI-1. After surgery, the patient was found to have pulmonar

BACKGROUND: Extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma (EES) is a mesenchyme-derived small blue cell tumor, which is distinguished by its rarity, aggressiveness, dismal prognosis, and distinct pathogenesis. Occurring almost exclusively among children and young adults, EES can arise from a variety of organs and portends a rapid clinical deterioration and high likelihood of recurrence.
DISCUSSION: We present the first reported case of a primary pancreatic Ewing's sarcoma in a patient with concomitant portal vein thrombosis. The atypical presentation of this extraordinarily rare tumor underscores the imperati

Ewing's sarcoma of the finger is extremely rare. Pain and swelling of the affected finger are the most frequent presenting features. We report two cases of Ewing's sarcoma located at ring finger and the thumb in two children aged 14 and 10 years. The first patient died of generalised metastases despite surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The second had no localised recurrence or metastases after surgery and chemotherapy at last follow-up of 4.5 years after tumour resection. The tumour's surgical accessibility, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy improve the prognosis of this tumour.

Ewing's sarcoma is a high-grade malignant primary bone tumour with aggressive clinico-radiologic features. Rarely, it exhibits a benign pattern, but presentation as a solitary bone cyst in a long bone is rather unusual. The purpose of this paper is to document such a cystic presentation with relatively benign clinico-radiologic course and to review the pertinent literature. A 27-year-old male presented with a pathologic fracture through a radiologically benign appearing solitary bone cyst in the distal tibial metaphysis. The fracture healed on conservative treatment, but the patient presented

A 12-year-old boy complained of swelling of the left cheek. Fiberscopic examination revealed the presence of a soft reddish mass in the middle meatus of the left nostril. CT scan showed a large mass completely filling the left maxillary sinus. The lesion originated from the maxillary sinus and extended to the middle nasal meatus; bone destruction and invasion of the subcutaneous tissue of the cheek were noted. T2-weighted MRI images revealed a heterogeneous signal in the left maxillary sinus. Under general anaesthesia, biopsies were obtained through an intraoral incision. On pathology, atypica

AIM: Almost 20 different prognostic factors have so far been investigated in childhood bone tumors, but apart from clinical stage the results have been inconclusive. We evaluated possible prognostic factors of malignant bone tumors in children and adolescents.
METHODS: Seventy children and adolescents, who have been treated for bone sarcomas (36 with osteosarcoma and 34 with Ewing's sarcoma) at the Children's Hospital in Zagreb and the Orthopedic Clinic of the Zagreb University School of Medicine were included in the study. We analyzed 9 variables: clinical stage, patient age and sex, tumor s

A retrospective review was performed of the results of all allograft reconstructions that had been done after the resection of an osteosarcoma or an Ewing sarcoma in a skeletally immature patient between 1982 and 1989 at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. There were twenty-six patients. Six reconstructions were intercalary, sixteen were resection arthrodeses, three followed resection of a bone segment including the epiphysis (osteoarticular reconstruction), and one was a replacement of the entire humerus. Resection arthrodesis about the knee was performed with a smooth intramedullary r

The role of radiotherapy in the management of Ewing's sarcoma is discussed in view of both historical and current treatment policies. In particular, a comparison of radiotherapy and surgery as modalities for local control is presented. The technical aspects of dose and volume of radiotherapy are discussed together with its time relationship to chemotherapy and surgery. Although studies are in progress evaluating lower doses and smaller volumes than those used traditionally, until the results of these are available it would seem prudent to recommend the standard therapy as outlined in the guide

A case of Ewing's Sarcoma of the thumb is described. Four years after a fracture of the first metacarpal, followed by a series of repeated traumata to the area, a tumour was discovered. According to Ewing's criteria of trauma induced malignancy, this case is highly suggestive to have been caused by trauma.

A patient with Ewing's sarcoma presented with the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) (1). Plasma values for vasopressin were found to be over four times the normal values expected for the plasma osmolality. At postmortem examination, the arginine vasopressin concentration in the tumor tissue was ten times that of the plasma. These data suggest that Ewing's sarcoma may cause SIADH.

Subcutaneous murine xenograft models are one of the most commonly used in vivo experimental methods in the cancer research field. Due to the lack of syngenic animal models for Ewing sarcoma, subcutaneous murine xenograft models currently offer the simplest way to investigate antineoplastic effects of therapeutics or biological functions of target genes in vivo. In this chapter, we describe in detail a widely used procedure for subcutaneous injection in mice, focusing on the specific characteristics of Ewing sarcoma cell lines.

The chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay provides a rapid, cost-effective, and ethically advantageous in vivo model to investigate tumor growth, angiogenesis, invasion, and metastasis. The CAM of the developing chicken embryo forms a highly vascularized and naturally immunodeficient environment that supports the implantation and proliferation of human or murine cells without the need for immunosuppression. This chapter presents a detailed and standardized protocol for performing tumor xenografts and metastasis analyses on the CAM, including optimized conditions for egg handling, embryo viabili
