[Sinus pericranii; a congenital swelling on the scalp].

BACKGROUND: Sinus pericranii is a rare congenital disorder of the skull. It involves a venous connection between the intracranial and extracranial venous systems caused by a defect at the level of a cranial sinus. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present the case of a 20-year-old woman with a soft compressible swelling on the back of her head from birth. MRI examination revealed sinus pericranii. The treatment consisted of coagulating the venous connection and closing the cranial malformation. CONCLUSION: In a patient with soft-tissue swelling on the back of the head that has been present since birth, d

Pemphigus vulgaris with loss of hair on the scalp.

Pemphigus vulgaris is an autoimmune disease, which leads to flaccid bullae and erosions. Although the scalp is commonly involved, hair loss is rarely seen. We herein report a case of 32-year-old female patient with a 2-year history of pemphigus vulgaris, involving the skin and mucosa. Although clinical improvement was achieved with oral corticosteroids and mycophenolate mofetil, the patient developed tender plaques on her scalp, accompanied by hair loss. Histopathology and direct immunofluorescence were consistent with pemphigus vulgaris. Skin swab cultured Staphylococcus aureus. Treatment wit…

Hair and scalp disorders in ethnic populations.

Human hair has been classified into 3 major groups, as determined by ethnic origin. In these populations, significant structural and biochemical variations of the hair follicle and shaft are seen, as well as unique hair grooming practices. These structural variations of the hair are closely linked to the common disorders of the hair and scalp, such as acquired trichorrhexis nodosa, seborrheic dermatitis, traction alopecia, central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, dissecting cellulitis, frontal fibrosing alopecia, and pseudofolliculitis barbae.

Solitary fibrous tumor of the scalp in a child.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that arise most commonly in the pleura but have been increasingly reported in extrapleural sites. The authors report the case of an SFT of the scalp that manifested as an enlarging scalp mass in a 2-year-old boy. The mass was surgically excised. Histological examination showed it to be composed of fusiform cells of variable cellularity with a central hyalinization zone. Immunohistochemical staining was positive for CD34 and negative for smooth muscle actin, S100 protein, desmin, and h-caldesmon. On 1-year follow-up, there was no rec…

Management of aplasia cutis congenita of the scalp.

BACKGROUND: Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) is a rare condition commonly affecting the scalp in which there is a focal deficiency of cutaneous tissues of varying severity ranging from an absence of skin through to full thickness defects involving deeper elements such as bone and dura. Lesions of the scalp can be associated with complications including infection, hemorrhage, thrombosis, and seizures. Opinions in the current literature regarding management of this condition are varied with both conservative and surgical management advocated. Conservative treatment consists of regular wound dressin…

Squamoid eccrine ductal carcinoma of the scalp.

Squamoid eccrine ductal carcinoma (SEDC) is an exceedingly rare tumor that shows both squamous and adnexal ductal differentiation. We report a case of this unusual tumor occurring on the occiput of a 53-year-old man. A histopathological examination revealed a nodular lesion infiltrating the dermis and subcutaneous tissue with numerous duct-like structure and squamoid differentiation foci. Five months later, the patient presented with a palpable mass at the site of the previous excision and the right side of the neck. Sono-guided fine needle aspiration of the right neck mass was performed and w

[Furuncles on the scalp after a trip to Brazil].

HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: A 68-year-old woman suffered for six weeks from four skin eruptions on her head after returning from Brazil. The skin manifestations resembled furuncles, grew continually in size until they were about 2 cm in diameter and [corrected] she finally developed intermittent sharp pain on her head. On presentation she had a mild lymphadenopathy on her neck but no other systemic complaints. INVESTIGATIONS: Each skin eruption had a central porus with seropurulent discharge and on examination within the central opening a whitish, tender moving mass could be detected. TREA

Differential diagnosis of the scalp hair folliculitis.

Scalp hair folliculitis is a relatively common condition in dermatological practice and a major diagnostic and therapeutic challenge due to the lack of exact guidelines. Generally, inflammatory diseases of the pilosebaceous follicle of the scalp most often manifest as folliculitis. There are numerous infective agents that may cause folliculitis, including bacteria, viruses and fungi, as well as many noninfective causes. Several noninfectious diseases may present as scalp hair folliculitis, such as folliculitis decalvans capillitii, perifolliculitis capitis abscendens et suffodiens, erosive pus…

Actinomycetoma of the scalp after a car accident.

BACKGROUND: Actinomycetoma is the most frequent type of mycetoma in Mexico. Localization on the scalp is very rare. Because of this topography and potential spread to the brain, the present case became a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report the case of a 44-year-old woman with a 6 × 5 cm red, friable, granulomatous, vascular neoformation on the scalp and eye diagnosed as Nocardia brasiliensis actinomycetoma. RESULTS: A combination of amikacin and oral trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (SXT) was successfully administered with an excellent outcome and no side effe…

Involvement of scalp and nails in lupus erythematosus.

Lupus erythematosus (LE) is a systemic autoimmune disorder associated with polyclonal B-cell activation resulting in diverse patterns of aut … portant reflections of underlying SLE disease activity. This also applies to the involvement of the scalp and nails. Finally, it must be kept in mind that LE patients may also develop drug-related, or other unrelated common disorders of the hair and nails that do not reflect LE disease activity.
