Impact of telephone prompts on the adherence to an Internet-based aftercare program for women with bulimia nervosa: A secondary analysis of data from a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Poor adherence is a common challenge in self-directed mental health interventions. Research findings indicate that telephone prompts may be useful to increase adherence. METHOD: Due to poor adherence in a randomized controlled trial evaluating an Internet-based aftercare program for women with bulimia nervosa we implemented regular short telephone prompts into the study protocol halfway through the trial period. Of the 126 women in the intervention group, the first 63 women were not prompted by telephone (unprompted group) and compared with 63 women who subsequently enrolled int

High Burden of Iron and Vitamin B12 Deficiency Among Apparently Healthy Indian Infants Aged 9-12 Months: A Secondary Analysis of Cross-Sectional Data.

Micronutrient deficiencies during infancy adversely affect neurodevelopment, growth and long-term health, yet often remain clinically silent and under-recognized. This retrospective cross-sectional secondary analysis estimates proportion of iron and vitamin B12 deficiency among apparently healthy Indian infants aged 9-12 mo enrolled in a vaccine trial and examines associations with anthropometric indicators. Among 137 infants without overt illness (mean age 9.2 mo, 60% males), ferritin, vitamin B12 and concurrent deficiencies were noted in 89.1%, 72.3%, and 65.7% respectively. Deficiencies wer

Hemoglobin During Pregnancy Does Not Mediate the Relationship between Nutrition Supplements and Intrauterine Growth: A Secondary Data Analysis of Women First Preconception Nutrition Trial.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition supplements such as multiple micronutrient-fortified small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplementation (SQ-LNS) consumed either before or during pregnancy have been shown to improve intrauterine growth, but the mechanisms through which the supplements improve intrauterine growth remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: We examined whether hemoglobin (Hb) during pregnancy could be a potential mechanism through which multiple micronutrient-fortified SQ-LNS improve intrauterine growth. METHODS: We used data collected from women and newborns in a randomized controlled trial conducted

Isoniazid preventive therapy during infancy does not adversely affect growth among HIV-exposed uninfected children: Secondary analysis of data from a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT) decreases risk of tuberculosis (TB) disease; impact on long-term infant growth is unknown. In a recent randomized trial (RCT), we assessed IPT effects on infant growth without known TB exposure. METHODS: The infant TB Infection Prevention Study (iTIPS) trial was a non-blinded RCT among HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU) infants in Kenya. Inclusion criteria included age 6-10 weeks, birthweight ≥2.5 kg, and gestation ≥37 weeks. Infants in the IPT arm received 10 mg/kg isoniazid daily for 12 months, while the control trial received no intervention; post-t

Challenges in replicating secondary analysis of electronic health records data with multiple computable phenotypes: A case study on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia infections.

BACKGROUND: Replication of prediction modeling using electronic health records (EHR) is challenging because of the necessity to compute phenotypes including study cohort, outcomes, and covariates. However, some phenotypes may not be easily replicated across EHR data sources due to a variety of reasons such as the lack of gold standard definitions and documentation variations across systems, which may lead to measurement error and potential bias. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections are responsible for high mortality worldwide. With limited treatment options for the inf

Post-Campylobacter Guillain Barré Syndrome in the USA: secondary analysis of surveillance data collected during the 2009-2010 novel Influenza A (H1N1) vaccination campaign.

Guillain Barré syndrome (GBS), which is triggered by autoantibodies produced in response to antigenic stimuli such as certain infections and vaccinations, is the most common cause of acute flaccid paralysis worldwide. Campylobacter, the most common bacterial enteric infection in the USA, is reported to be the most commonly diagnosed antecedent of GBS, yet little information is available about the risk of post-Campylobacter GBS. Data collected through active, population-based surveillance in the Emerging Infections Program during the 2009-2010 novel Influenza A (H1N1) vaccination campaign allow
