Factors associated with behavioral adjustment among school-age children of gay and heterosexual single fathers through surrogacy.

Thirty-one children of gay single fathers and 28 children of heterosexual single fathers, all born through surrogacy, were compared with 31 children of gay partnered fathers through surrogacy and 30 children of heterosexual partnered fathers through in-vitro fertilization on their perceptions of self-worth and their father- and caregiver-reported internalizing and externalizing behaviors. For children of single fathers, the study also examined associations between aspects related to their surrogacy conception, feelings about their family arrangement, and behavioral adjustment. All children (47

Psychosocial distress and infertility: men and women respond differently.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate gender differences in psychosocial responses of 449 consecutive first-admission couples in a fertility clinic. Consistent with previous research, infertile women showed higher distress than their partners on a global measure of psychiatric symptoms and subscales of anxiety, depression, hostility, and cognitive disturbances, as well as on measures of stress and self-esteem. When compared with same-sexed population norms on the measure of psychiatric symptoms, both male and female infertile patients were significantly more distressed than average. No evi

Male infertility in long-term survivors of pediatric cancer: a report from the childhood cancer survivor study.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of male infertility and treatment-related risk factors in childhood cancer survivors. METHODS: Within the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study, 1,622 survivors and 274 siblings completed the Male Health Questionnaire. The analysis was restricted to survivors (938/1,622; 57.8 %) and siblings (174/274; 63.5 %) who tried to become pregnant. Relative risks (RR) and 95 % confidence intervals (CI) for the prevalence of self-reported infertility were calculated using generalized linear models for demographic variables and treatment-related f

Effects of ETV5 (ets variant gene 5) on testis and body growth, time course of spermatogonial stem cell loss, and fertility in mice.

The transcription factor ets variant gene 5 (ETV5; also known as ERM) is essential for self-renewal of spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs). Mice with targeted disruption of Etv5 (Etv5(-/-)) undergo the first wave of spermatogenesis, but all SSCs are lost during this time, causing a Sertoli cell-only phenotype. This study examined body and testis growth and the time course of SSC loss in Etv5(-/-) mice to understand how loss of ETV5 impacts testicular and somatic development. Body weights were reduced in postnatal Etv5(-/-) males, indicating a role of ETV5 in growth. Testis weights and histology i

Tooth in a cyst - Is it always a dentigerous cyst?

BACKGROUND: Liver fibrosis (LF) is a chronic disease, associated with many collateral diseases including reproductive dysfunction. Although the normal liver has a large regenerative capacity the complications of LF could be severe and irreversible. Hormone and sex-related issues of LF development and interactions with male reproductive have not been finally studied. The aim was to study the reproductive function of male rats in experimental CCl4-induced liver fibrosis rat model, and the capability for restoration of both the liver and male reproduction system. MATERIALS: Studies were conducte

Cognitive coping, goal adjustment, and depressive and anxiety symptoms in people undergoing infertility treatment: a prospective study.

The relationships between cognitive coping strategies, goal adjustment, and symptoms of depression and anxiety were studied in people with fertility problems. Both cross-sectional and prospective relationships were studied in a sample of 313 patients attending an infertility clinic. Self-report questionnaires were filled out at home. Positive refocusing, rumination and catastrophizing, and goal reengagement were related to symptoms of depression and anxiety. When looking at the long-term effects, rumination and catastrophizing were also related to emotional problems nine months later. These fi

Women's health outcomes after traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major public health problem, yet little is known about how this injury may affect long-term outcomes unique to women. This research examined the health outcomes relevant to premenopausal women 5-12 years after injury. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study at eight participating acute care/rehabilitation facilities. Participants were consecutive eligible women with moderate to severe TBI. A follow-up interview assessed menstrual functioning, fertility, and pregnancy experiences before and after injury as well as cervical cancer screening.

Comprehensive assessment of the health status of extremely low birth weight children at eight years of age: comparison with a reference group.

OBJECTIVE: To apply a multiattribute health status (MAHS) classification system to data available on two cohorts of school-aged children to describe several dimensions of health simultaneously. The MAHS system describes both the type and severity of functional limitations according to seven attributes: sensation, mobility, emotion, cognition, self-care, pain, and fertility (fertility not applicable in this study), with four or five levels of function within each attribute. DESIGN: The MAHS system was applied retrospectively to clinical and psychometric data collected prospectively at age 8 ye

Correlates of Use of Timed Unprotected Intercourse to Reduce Horizontal Transmission Among Ugandan HIV Clients with Fertility Intentions.

We examined the correlates of use of safer conception methods (SCM) in a sample of 400 Ugandan HIV clients (75 % female; 61 % on antiretroviral therapy; 61 % with HIV-negative or unknown status partners) in heterosexual relationships with fertility intentions. SCM assessed included timed unprotected intercourse, manual self-insemination, sperm washing, and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). In the 6 months prior to baseline, 47 (12 %) reported using timed unprotected intercourse to reduce risk of HIV infection (or re-infection), none had used manual self-insemination or sperm washing, and two ha

Noncanonical functions of glucocorticoids: A novel role for glucocorticoids in performing multiple beneficial functions in endometrial stem cells.

Chronic stress has a negative impact on many fertility-related functions; thus, the recent decline in female fertility seems to be at least partially associated with increased stress. The secretion of glucocorticoids is a typical endocrine response to chronic stress and indirectly reduces uterine receptivity through the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. However, in addition to its well-known canonical role, the direct effects of chronic stress-induced glucocorticoids on various uterine functions and their underlying molecular mechanisms are complex and have not yet been revealed. Relationship of maternal body mass index and height to twinning.

OBJECTIVE: Increasing use of fertility drugs is considered the primary cause for the recent increase in dizygotic twinning in developed countries. However, dizygotic twinning has also been related to obesity in foreign populations. We sought to confirm this relationship in U.S. pregnancies, which predated widespread use of fertility drugs. METHODS: We analyzed 51,783 pregnancies (561 twin) in the Collaborative Perinatal Project, which took place at 12 hospitals in the United States from 1959 to 1966. The occurrence of twinning was compared according to maternal self-reported prepregnant body

Fertility Preservation: A Tale of Two Testicles.

OBJECTIVE: The transgender population has long been marginalized by society. Societal stigmata, fear to seek care, and dearth of provider knowledge regarding transgender health issues has caused disparities to widen. The purpose of this case study is to call to attention the often-overlooked aspect of transgender care: the importance of fertility preservation prior to undergoing therapy. METHODS: 13 and 16-year old genetically XY patients presented to a tertiary care facility for gender affirmation. Both self-identified as female since a young age and successfully socially transitioned. Impen

Treating infertility as a missing capability, not a disease: a capability approach.

Infertility patients and patient advocates have long argued for classifying infertility as a disease, in the hopes that this recognition would improve coverage for and access to fertility treatment. However, for many fertility patients, including older women, single women and same-sex couples, infertility does not represent a true disease state. Therefore, while calling infertility a 'disease' may seem politically advantageous, it might actually exclude patients with 'social' or 'relational' infertility from treatment. What is needed is a new conceptual framing of infertility that better refle

Daw1 regulates the timely onset of cilia motility during development.

Motile cilia generate cell propulsion and extracellular fluid flows that are crucial for airway clearance, fertility and left-right patterning. Motility is powered by dynein arm complexes that are assembled in the cytoplasm then imported into the cilium. Studies in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii showed that ODA16 is a cofactor which promotes dynein arm import. Here, we demonstrate that the zebrafish homolog of ODA16, Daw1, facilitates the onset of robust cilia motility during development. Without Daw1, cilia showed markedly reduced motility during early development; however, motility subsequently i
