Longitudinal characterization of impulsivity phenotypes boosts signal for genomic correlates and heritability.

Genomic correlates of impulsivity have been identified in several genome-wide association studies (GWAS) using cross-sectional designs, but no studies have investigated the molecular genetic correlates of impulsivity phenotypes using longitudinally constructed traits. In 3860 unrelated European participants in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), we constructed longitudinal phenotypes for delay discounting and impulsive personality traits (as measured by the UPPS-P impulsive behavior scales) via assessment at ages 24, 26, and 28. We conducted GWASs of impulsivity using

Sleep Disorders in dogs: A Pathophysiological and Clinical Review.

Sleep is a fundamental process in mammals, including domestic dogs. Disturbances in sleep affect physiological functions like cognitive and physical performance, immune response, pain sensation and increase the risk of diseases. In dogs, sleep can be affected by several conditions, with narcolepsy, REM sleep behavior disorder and sleep breathing disorders being the most frequent causes. Furthermore, sleep disturbances can be a symptom of other primary diseases where they can contribute to the worsening of clinical signs. This review describes reciprocally interacting sleep and wakefulness prom

[XU Yunxiang's clinical experience in treatment of tic disorder].

The paper introduces Professor XU Yunxiang's experience in treatment of tic disorder with Xu's manual flying needling therapy by both hands. This therapy is characterized by the integration of yinyang regulation and the painless technique of manual flying needling. It is especially applicable to pediatric encephalopathy. Professor XU Yunxiang believes that tic disorder is related to the liver hyperactivity and spleen weakness, and the imbalance in the sea of marrow in pathogenesis. The treatment should focus on inhibiting the wood, supporting the earth, eliminating the wind and regulating the

Quantitative thermal sensory testing in patients with monomelic amyotrophy.

BACKGROUND: Quantitative thermal sensory testing (QST) is a non-invasive method to assess somatic small fibre dysfunction, which is not evaluated with routine nerve conduction studies (NCS). Monomelic amyotrophy (MMA), is a pure motor disorder with no sensory abnormalities on routine NCS, and has not been evaluated using QST. AIMS AND OBJECTIVE: Present study aimed to evaluate somatic small fibre involvement in MMA patients. Forty patients with MMA with no sensory abnormalities or routine NCS were evaluated using QST for thresholds of cold sensation (CS), warm sensation (WS), cold pain (CP) a

Paroxysmal pruritus. Its clinical characterization and a hypothesis of its pathogenesis.

In dermatologic literature generally, itching, that familiar sensation that evokes a desire to rub or scratch, has been attributed almost without exception to something occurring in the skin: e.g., an insect bite, ringworm, contact dermatitis, urticaria, lymphoma, provocation by bile salts in jaundice. Itching in such instances is almost invariably relieved quite promptly, even if only temporarily, by rubbing or scratching with only moderate vigor, not enough to damage the skin, or at most to damage it only superficially. No one scratches a mosquito bite, hives, ringworm, or even lichen planus

Conversion disorder with earthquake hallucinations treated by hypnotherapy a case report.

This paper explores the use of hypnosis in tracing the etiology of Conversion Disorder (CD) in adolescents through hypnoanalysis, as well as outlining a structured workflow for hypnotherapy. A 16-year-old female high school student, who experienced sensations of earthquakes at any time and was unable to lie down to sleep, underwent multiple physical examinations across various hospitals without any identified cause. Conventional treatments with both Chinese and Western medicine were ineffective over a six-month period. Using hypnoanalysis techniques, the source of her condition was identified

Application of the Rat Grimace Scale as a Marker of Supraspinal Pain Sensation after Cervical Spinal Cord Injury.

Experimental models of neuropathic pain (NP) typically rely on withdrawal responses to assess the presence of pain. Reflexive withdrawal responses to a stimulus are used to evaluate evoked pain and, as such, do not include the assessment of spontaneous NP nor evaluation of the affective and emotional consequences of pain in animal models. Additionally, withdrawal responses can be mediated by spinal cord reflexes and may not accurately indicate supraspinal pain sensation. This is especially true in models of traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI), wherein spastic syndrome, a motor disorder characte

[Cenesthopathy in the presenium associated with manic factor resolved with lithium carbonate: two female cases with underlying manic or mixed state].

Cenesthopathy is a syndrome where patients persistently complain of abnormal sensations in some particular parts of their body, giving them odd descriptions, with the sensations being medically unexplainable. It is also often chronic and refractory to treatment It is commonly divided into two types: one is defined in a narrow sense, with only an abnormal sensation of the body as the main symptom, and the other in a wider sense, where the sensation is a syndrome accompanying schizophrenia, depression, or organic psychiatric disorder. The nosological evaluation of cenesthopathy has not been esta

Altered processing of self-produced sensations in psychosis at cortical and spinal levels.

Psychosis is often characterized by disturbances in the sense of self, with patients frequently misattributing self-produced sensations to external sources. While somatic hallucinations and misperceptions are common, the underlying disruptions in basic bodily self-processing remain unclear. We aimed to investigate processing of self-evoked sensations, including touch and interoception, in psychosis using a multimodal, multi-method approach. This case-control-study included a total of 70 participants (35 patients diagnosed with psychotic disorders, 35 age- and sex-matched controls). Participant

Impulsivity Dimensions and Risky Sex Behaviors in an At-Risk Young Adult Sample.

Impulsivity is a personality-based risk factor that has been well studied in relation to risky sexual behavior. Recent conceptualizations of impulsivity have proposed multidimensional facets comprised of premeditation, perseverance, sensation seeking, negative urgency, and positive urgency (UPPS-P model). Prior studies have found that these facets are associated with risky sexual behavior in adolescent and college student samples, but no prior studies have evaluated them in clinical samples. The current study examined how impulsivity-related traits related to two different risky sexual behavio

Pulseless hematochezia: Takayasu's arteritis associated with ulcerative colitis.

A 36-year-old woman with ulcerative colitis presented with fever, chest and back pain, and fatigue sensation of the arm. Her upper limb pulses were absent. Angiography showed multiple aneurysms of the aorta and its branches, consistent with Takayasu's arteritis. She showed HLA-B35 but no B52, which is the typical haplotype among the coexistence cases of both diseases. Prednisolone was effective. The possible pathogenic association of the disorders is discussed.

Sensory symptoms in cranial dystonia: a potential role in the etiology?

Cranial dystonia is normally considered as a pure movement disorder. Sensory symptoms have not received much attention, but we found ill-defined pain, discomfort, distortion of sensory modalities, 'phantom' kinetic or postural sensations in the orofacial areas subsequently involved by the dyskinesia in all of 11 consecutive patients, preceding by weeks or months the motor syndrome. Physicians were often mislead, initially making diagnoses such as trigeminal neuralgia, dental problems, sicca syndrome, chronic conjunctivitis, glossitis or stomatitis. The patients reported that the orofacial move

Co-occurrence of symptoms of substance and behavioral addictions over time: A secondary analysis of longitudinal data from the Cohort Study on Substance Use Risk Factors.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The transdiagnostic Syndrome Model of Addiction considers addiction as a syndrome with multiple opportunities for expression, i.e., a common underlying disorder that may manifest in distinctive ways. Considering that testing of the model has been rare, this study examined the co-occurrence of symptoms of substance use disorders and behavioral addictions over 10 years by identifying profiles and predictors associated with group membership. METHODS: Longitudinal data (N = 4,760 males) from the Cohort Study on Substance Use Risk Factors (C-SURF) conducted in Switzerland were

Pain in the enthesis of levator ani muscle: A novel source of chronic pelvic pain.

BACKGROUND: Managing chronic pelvic pain (CPP) remains a challenge due to its diverse range of causes. A newly identified anatomical entity known as the enthesis of the levator ani muscle (LAM) and its associated disorders might play a role. This paper describes a novel insight into CPP's origin, aiming to improve accurate diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: Data were collected from medical records (paper or electronic) retrospectively. The study included 112 patients meeting the criteria, divided into CPP and non-CPP groups. Clinical symptoms, including location of LAM enthesis, referred pain

The structure of eating disorder and somatic symptoms.

Individuals with eating disorders (EDs) often present with somatic concerns in treatment, such as bloating, fullness, and feeling tight clothes on skin. However, most research generally focuses on general interoception (e.g., heartbeat) rather than sensations relevant to EDs (e.g., sensations related to the gastrointestinal system or body movement). In the current study (N = 181), we used network analysis to model the structure of ED symptoms and somatic concerns among individuals with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and other specified feeding and eating disorder. Results showed that heigh
