Factor analysis on the Sensory Profile from a national sample of children without disabilities.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to identify relationships in the 125 items of the revised Sensory Profile, a tool designed to assess children's responses to commonly occurring sensory events. METHOD: Parents of 1,115 children ages 3 to 10 years and without disabilities completed the Sensory Profile. The parents reported the percentage of time their children engaged in each of the 125 behaviors listed on the profile. RESULTS: Factor analysis revealed nine discreet factors that indicate sensory modulation and responsiveness: sensory seeking, emotionally reactive, low endurance/tone, o

Effects on perceptual development of visual deprivation during infancy.

We measured three aspects of vision in children treated for unilateral congenital cataract: visual resolution, the symmetry of optokinetic nystagmus (OKN), and peripheral vision. Good visual resolution was achieved by children who had had the earliest treatment and who had had the normal eye patched close to 50% of the waking time throughout early childhood. All children treated for unilateral congenital cataract showed a marked asymmetry of OKN regardless of the age of treatment. One child with early treatment who could be tested with the Goldmann perimeter also showed especially poor sensiti

Hair cell condition and auditory nerve response in normal and noise-damaged cochleas.

Histological and physiological data are presented from cats born and raised in a low-noise environment and from cats with long-standing, noise-induced threshold shifts. Even after a 1 1/2-year survival from acoustic trauma, there were threshold elevations of roughly 40 dB in the response of single auditory-nerve fibers which could not be correlated with significant loss of hair cells. An attempt was made to correlate these threshold differences with differences in the condition of the sensory cells as seen in a light-microscopic examination of epon-embedded surface preparations. Of all the his

Altered cutaneous sensation in trigeminal neuralgia.

Noninvasive quantitative somatosensory tests were used to measure sensory perception thresholds on the faces of 26 patients with idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia. The affected divisions were determined by the presence of trigger zones. Elevations of thresholds of sensations subserved by both large- and small-diameter fibers were found both in the affected and in the unaffected adjacent divisions when compared with the healthy side. The findings are interpreted as further evidence of combined peripheral and central pathologic conditions in idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia.

Psychophysical profiles differentiate drugs of abuse.

Behavioral reaction times and both auditory and visual absolute thresholds were determined in baboons before and after the administration of stimulant and depressant drugs of abuse. Pentobarbital and diazepam increased reaction times and elevated the visual threshold in a dose-dependent manner. Diazepam also raised the auditory threshold though pentobarbital did not. Chlordiazepoxide affected neither sensory thresholds nor reaction times over the same dose range; d-methylamphetamine elevated the visual threshold, but did not elevate the auditory threshold or increase reaction times.

A capsaicin-receptor homologue with a high threshold for noxious heat.

Pain-producing heat is detected by several classes of nociceptive sensory neuron that differ in their thermal response thresholds. The cloned capsaicin receptor, also known as the vanilloid receptor subtype 1 (VR1), is a heat-gated ion channel that has been proposed to mediate responses of small-diameter sensory neurons to moderate (43 degrees C) thermal stimuli. VR1 is also activated by protons, indicating that it may participate in the detection of noxious thermal and chemical stimuli in vivo. Here we identify a structurally related receptor, VRL-1, that does not respond to capsaicin, acid o

Mechanosensory and thermosensory changes across the border of impaired sensitivity to pinprick after mandibular nerve injury.

PURPOSE: The study goal was to determine how sensory function varies across the border of impaired sensitivity to pinprick in patients with mandibular nerve injuries. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Borders of decreased sensitivity to pinprick were mapped in 15 patients who reported altered sensation. Four mechanoreceptive, 2 thermoreceptive, and 2 thermonociceptive functions were studied at 5 sites separated by 0.6 cm across the border. The tests were repeated to evaluate day-to-day consistency in the pattern of variation for each sensory measure. RESULTS: The estimates of sensory function were not f

Olfactory threshold increase in trigeminal neuralgia after balloon compression.

Idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia (ITN) is a well-known disease often treated with neurosurgical procedures, which may produce sensorial abnormalities, such as numbness, dysesthesia and taste complaints. We studied 12 patients that underwent this technique, in order to verify pain, gustative and olfactory thresholds abnormalities, with a follow-up of 120 days. We compared the patients with a matched control group of 12 patients. Our results found a significant difference in the olfactory threshold at the immediate post-operative period (p=0.048). We concluded that injured trigeminal fibers are p

Influence of previous treatment on outcome after glycerol rhizotomy for trigeminal neuralgia.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of previous treatment on outcome and sensory disturbance after a retrogasserian glycerol injection for trigeminal neuralgia. Ninety-nine patients with trigeminal neuralgia underwent a retrogasserian glycerol rhizotomy. Fifty-three of those patients experienced recurrent pain after the previous treatment. At the 1 year follow-up, the outcome was excellent or good in 83% of patients with no previous treatment, compared with 60 and 75% in those patients with earlier glycerol injections or radiofrequency lesions, respectively. Repetitive motion in perception of tactile sensation in the fingers of string players.

Little is known about the mechanisms that underlie the pathophysiology involved in the development of cumulative trauma disorders. Musicians, specifically string players, may be a useful model to examine the cumulative effects of repetitive motion given the highly attended movements of their left hands and the stereotypical grasp of their right hands. Musculoskeletal disorders related to playing are experienced by 39% to 87% of musicians, making musicians a potentially good model for the study of factors involved in development of cumulative trauma disorders. Sensory thresholds for two-point d…

Disturbances of small-field horizontal and vertical optokinetic nystagmus in amblyopia.

Horizontal and vertical small-field optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) were examined in persons with strabismic or anisometropic amblyopia. Reduced velocity for the slow phase of OKN driven by temporalward and upward target motion presented monocularly was observed in both the amblyopic and nonamblyopic eyes of some subjects. Several experiments were conducted in search of a sensory disturbance of perceived motion sensitivity which could account for the abnormal OKN. Comparisons between the frequency response for OKN and the contrast sensitivity function for perceived motion revealed that amblyopes w

Which myelinated sensory axons sprout into an end-to-side coapted peripheral nerve in the rat?

BACKGROUND: The high-threshold sensory afferents, which express trkA, are predominantly involved in terminal collateral sprouting in the skin of adult mammals. We explored which sensory axons are capable of sprouting into the end-to-side coapted nerve in the rat. METHOD: The distal stump of the transected peroneal nerve was sutured to the side of the uninjured sural nerve. After 36 weeks, sprouting of sensory axons into the end-to-side coapted nerve was assessed by the electrophysiologic measurements of compound action potential and by counting the myelinated axons. The neurons in the dorsal

Gustatory and olfactory function in patients with unipolar and bipolar depression.

Although the crucial distinction between unipolar depressive disorder and bipolar disorder is the presence of mania (or hypomania) in the course of the latter, significant differences between unipolar and bipolar depression have also been found in clinical studies. The primary aim of the present investigation was to assess pleasantness/unpleasantness ratings of chemosensory stimuli in depressed patients, including subjects with unipolar and bipolar depression. Sensory aspects (thresholds and identification abilities) of gustatory and olfactory function were also assessed. There were no major d

Impaired anal sensation and early diabetic faecal incontinence.

Faecal incontinence develops in up to 20% of diabetic patients. To try to determine the relative contributions of sensory and motor neuropathy in this troublesome complication, anorectal function was examined in 10 male diabetic patients with early faecal incontinence (mucus leakage or faecal staining without the need to wear a pad), 10 asymptomatic male diabetic patients, and 10 normal control subjects. Motor function was tested using anal manometry to determine the resting and maximum squeeze pressure, and the functional anal canal length. No significant differences were found between the gr
