Rift valley fever (RVF) is an arboviral disease produced by a bunyavirus belonging to the genus Phlebovirus. Several species of Aedes and Culex are the vectors of this virus that affects sheep, goats, buffalos, cattle, camels and human beings. The human disease is well known, especially during periods of intense epizootic activity. The initial description of the disease dates back to 1930, when animals and human outbreaks appeared on a farm in Lake Naivasha, in the Great Rift Valley of Kenya. Until 2000, this disease was only described in Africa, and then outbreaks were also declared in the Ki

BACKGROUND: Animal-assisted services, specifically animal-assisted support programs (AASPs, pet therapy, animal-assisted therapy, animal-assisted activities), are promising programs that may improve the mental health and overall well-being of older adults living with and without dementia in long-term care (LTC) homes. Few studies have explored the perspectives of residents and LTC staff regarding AASPs for older adults. This study aimed to identify the initial perspectives of LTC staff regarding the feasibility, acceptability, and other factors influencing the implementation of a live AASP wit

Humans living in and around forest areas are at increased risk of zoonotic disease transmission. The transhumant Van Gujjars of North India are one such population, but there is an absence of health data, including evidence of zoonotic diseases, in this community. Pastoral communities can have a wide breadth of knowledge of livestock diseases, but not necessarily of human diseases. This study investigated the perceptions that the Van Gujjars have specifically of zoonotic diseases, using participatory epidemiological methods, including semi-structured interviews, ranking, proportional piling, t

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease that is underreported in many countries, including Trinidad and Tobago, because of a low level of awareness of the disease. A knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) survey concerning leptospirosis was carried out on 800 households throughout Trinidad to determine the level of awareness of the disease in the country. Of the participants, 52.4% had heard of leptospirosis but approximately half of these did not know any signs or symptoms of the disease. Knowledge of leptospirosis was not related to level of education of people, but to geographical location. A

Blast-induced traumatic brain injury is a prevalent and underreported condition, particularly among military service members, for whom effective prophylactic interventions are lacking. Nano-pulsed laser therapy (NPLT) is a non-invasive neuromodulatory approach that delivers short pulses of near-infrared light to generate optoacoustic effects within cerebral tissue and has previously demonstrated therapeutic benefit following TBI. In this study, we evaluated whether a single pre-exposure application of NPLT could confer protection against neurological, cognitive, and cellular sequelae of mild b

Bovine tuberculosis is a disease of importance for animal and public health, as it causes chronic infection in both animals and humans, leads to reduced milk and meat productivity, and may generate embargoes on the trade of products from affected herds. The Brazilian National Program for the Control and Eradication of Brucellosis and Tuberculosis (in Portuguese, PNCEBT) classifies the Brazilian states according to the level of risk for bovine brucellosis and tuberculosis determined by the prevalence of outbreaks of these diseases. The present study aimed to: determine the prevalence of outbrea

Vector-borne pathogens impact public health, animal production, and animal welfare. Research on arthropod vectors such as mosquitoes, ticks, sandflies, and midges which transmit pathogens to humans and economically important animals is crucial for development of new control measures that target transmission by the vector. While insecticides are an important part of this arsenal, appearance of resistance mechanisms is increasingly common. Novel tools for genetic manipulation of vectors, use of Wolbachia endosymbiotic bacteria, and other biological control mechanisms to prevent pathogen transmis

Veterinary diagnostic labs (VDLs) are important service agencies providing essential diagnostic testing for a wide variety of domestic animal species as well as wildlife. They serve key roles in disease monitoring and diagnosis as well as surveillance for diseases of consequence. Of the many roles VDLs serve, one is being a member of the larger team of professionals dealing with the management of the bovine respiratory disease (BRD) complex. VDLs provide a number of services related to the management of BRD. These include disease outbreak investigation, abnormal morbidity characterization, rou

INTRODUCTION: Rabies is one of the oldest and deadliest diseases known to man. After the clinical occurrence of rabies, there is no comprehensive treatment possible. However, the development of rabies can be prevented to a large extent if animal bites are managed appropriately and in time. The post-exposure treatment of animal bite cases is of prime importance in this regard. India has the highest burden of animal bite and rabies cases in the world. This imposes a substantial burden on the healthcare delivery services of the country.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study con

Vespa velutina nigrithorax is an invasive alien organism that has raised concerns in all beekeeping communities of invaded countries including the Republic of Korea, European countries and Japan. Known also as the yellow-legged hornet (or the 'Asian hornet'), it is native to northern India, eastern Nepal, Bhutan and the People's Republic of China. Given its climatic and biological characteristics and the effects of climate change, some coastal areas of North America, Argentina, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand are also susceptible to invasion. Vespa velutina nigrithorax notably affects

Translational research serves as a bench-to-field "translation" of basic scientific research into practical diagnostic procedures and therapies useful in human and veterinary clinical services. The productivity of translational research involving infectious diseases relevant to both human and animal health (e.g., influenza diagnosis and epidemiology using emerging molecular detection and identification methods) can be maximized when both human and veterinary medical virology disciplines are integrated. Influenza viruses are continually evolving through site-specific mutation and segment reasso

Fertility is a crucial aspect of dairy herd efficiency and sustainability. Among factors influencing fertility in dairy cattle, metabolic stress and systemic inflammation of animals are of main relevance, especially in the postpartum stage when ovarian activity begins and cows are inseminated. Our study aimed to infer the associations between milk infrared-predicted blood biomarkers of stress resilience and fertility traits, namely the interval from calving to first service (iCF), days open (DO), and the pregnancy rate at first service (PRF) in a multibreed population of 89,097 dairy cows. The

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a complex neurobehavioral disorder that disproportionately affects military service members. The clinical presentation of PTSD is heterogeneous and may overlap with other psychiatric conditions. According to the Fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), common symptoms include memory loss, mood and personality changes, impulsiveness, aggression, anxiety, and depression. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying PTSD remain incompletely understood, although research implicates pathways involving the hypothalam

The reported positive outcomes of animal-assisted services have led to an emerging interest in many different aspects of human-animal interactions. The influence of an assistance animal is thought to encompass several psychosocial domains in the life of a person with a significant health impairment. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying the relationship between Hearing Dogs and their owners. A prospective study design using a written questionnaire method was utilized to survey 58 current and 23 prospective Australian Lions Hearing Dogs owners. The Pet Expectations Inventory

OBJECTIVE: The cause of cognitive side effects after electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is largely unknown. Alterations in the blood-brain barrier (BBB) have been considered in several recent ECT studies. We therefore found it worthwhile to perform a systematic review of the literature to examine if electrically induced seizures affect the permeability of the BBB.
METHODS: PubMed/MEDLINE and Embase were searched 16 November 2022. Studies with a direct measurement of BBB permeability in animals treated with modified electroconvulsive stimulation (ECS) and in humans treated with ECT were included.

Significance: Electrical stimulation (ES) is a therapeutic intervention that may help specialists facilitate wound healing rates. The purpose of this section is to compile the available animal research regarding the effectiveness of ES on the injury potential, healing rate, cellular and molecular proliferation, mechanical properties, and survival rate of skin flaps. Recent Advances: Regardless of the type of ES current and polarity used, most of the animal experimental evidence suggests that application of ES can facilitate wound healing. However, treatment time should be sufficiently long to
