Frequent Shifts During Chronic Jet Lag Uncouple Liver Rhythms From the Light Cycle in Male Mice.

Circadian disruption is pervasive in modern society and associated with increased risk of disease. Chronic jet lag paradigms are popular experimental tools aiming to emulate human circadian disruption experienced during rotating and night shift work. Chronic jet lag induces metabolic phenotypes tied to liver and systemic functions, yet lack of a clear definition for how rhythmic physiology is impaired under these conditions hinders the ability to identify the underlying molecular mechanisms. Here, we compared 2 common chronic jet lag paradigms and found that neither induced arrythmicity of the

The Effects of Constant Light and Running-Wheel Access in Middle-Aged Female C57BL6/J Mice.

Objective  Chronic light exposure is associated with poorer mental and physical health. Many groups are chronically exposed to light due to their work schedule, including night-shift nurses. The present study aims to determine if middle-aged female mice have an increased vulnerability to chronic light exposure compared with younger individuals. Materials and Methods  Young and middle-age female mice were housed in cages with or without running wheels and were exposed to either a 12:12-hour light:dark cycle or constant light (LL). All mice were assayed for circadian locomotor activity and anxie

Non-linear associations between night shifts and adverse events in nursing staff: a restricted cubic spline analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Existing studies suggest that the number of night shifts may impact the occurrence of adverse events. However, while this relationship is well-documented, previous research has not thoroughly examined the non-linear associations between night shifts and adverse events among nursing staff, which remains a gap in our understanding. METHODS: Participants were 1,774 Chinese nurse staff. Psychosocial characteristics were screened by The Chinese version of the multidimensional scale of perceived social support (MSPSS) for social support, the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9)

Εndogenous metabolomic responses in circadian disrupted night shift working populations: a scoping review.

Night shift work (NSW) has been known for its linkage with circadian disruption, while the NSW carcinogenic potential is well documented. However, there has been little research on the NSW-associated biological pathways and small molecules that may be implicated with the early stages of carcinogenicity. Metabolomics platforms are novel exposomics tools that act as intermediate biological layers of information linking NSW schedules with the downstream endogenous response in humans. To this extent, we conducted a scoping review to answer the question: how does NSW impact the endogenous human met

Exploring Sleep Disturbance and Fatigue Level Among Critical Care Nurses in Jordan.

Sleep disturbances and fatigue are significant concerns among critical care nurses due to the demanding nature of their work, which includes long shifts, high patient acuity, and constant exposure to stress. This study explores the prevalence and correlation between sleep disturbances and fatigue among critical care nurses. Using a cross-sectional design, data were collected from 104 nurses across 6 government hospitals through validated self-reported measures, including the Richards-Campbell Sleep Scale and the Fatigue Assessment Scale. Findings revealed moderate sleep disturbance, with an av

Mirtazapine and ketanserin alter preference for gambling-like schedules of reinforcement in rats.

Drug and behavioral addictions have overlapping features, e.g., both manifest preference for larger, albeit costlier, reinforcement options in cost/benefit decision-making tasks. Our prior work revealed that the mixed-function serotonergic compound, mirtazapine, attenuates behaviors by rats motivated by abused drugs. To extend this work to behavioral addictions, here we determined if mirtazapine and/or ketanserin, another mixed-function serotonin-acting compound, can alter decision-making in rats that is independent of drug (or food)-motivated reward. Accordingly, we developed a novel variable

Patient-centered behavioral services for women veterans with mental health conditions.

The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is undergoing a transformational shift from disease-focused care to a Whole Health model that emphasizes physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health and well-being. As this shift is occurring, women veterans using VHA services face challenges navigating a system that has historically served a primarily male demographic, without consistent consensus on which services require specialization by gender. A quality improvement project was conducted to solicit feedback on VHA behavioral and wellness programs from women veterans enrolled in VHA mental hea

Pupillary abnormalities in childhood - 2 case presentations.

The midwifery profession varies greatly from one country to another. There are, however, a number of common features such as exposure to biological risks through contact with pregnant women and women in labor, exposure to postural stresses during examinations and medical acts, but also, increasingly, exposure to organizational constraints (work schedules, shift work, etc.). This article aims to give an overview of what is known about the occupational health risks of midwives (MWs). A review of the literature on Medline, from January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2017, was carried out. Articles focus

Sunlight Exposure, Work Hours, Caffeine Consumption, and Sleep Duration in the Naval Environment.

BACKGROUND: Sailors in the U.S. Navy are habitual shiftworkers, often experiencing circadian misalignment due to their irregular work/rest schedules. This study assessed the effect of sunlight exposure, work hours, and caffeinated beverage consumption on the daily sleep duration of crewmembers of a U.S. Navy ship during a 2-wk underway period. METHODS: Working in an artificially lit area with no access to sunlight during work hours, U.S. Navy crew members (N = 91) used daily logs to report their daily activity, caffeinated beverage consumption, and exposure to sunlight while off-duty; sleep w

The Seniority Swoop: Young Nurse Burnout, Violence, and Turnover Intention in an 11-Hospital Sample.

We sought to understand whether nurses aged 20 to 29 years burnout and intend to turnover in higher proportions than more senior nurses, and if so, why. Guided by Maslow's hierarchy, we used brief inventories to assess hospital-based bedside nurses at 11 hospitals in Pennsylvania and Rhode Island (n = 3549/9520) prior to the pandemic. In a second study, we compared scheduling policies, bargaining, and Magnet status to see whether these variables predicted worsened burnout rates in young nurses. In a pattern that appears like a swooping line when graphed, nurses aged 20 to 29 years reported hig

Individual differences in the energizing effects of caffeine on effort-based decision-making tests in rats.

Motivated behavior is characterized by activation and high work output. Nucleus accumbens (Nacb) modulates behavioral activation and effort-based decision-making. Caffeine is widely consumed because of its energizing properties. This methylxanthine is a non-selective adenosine A1/A2A receptor antagonist. Adenosine receptors are highly concentrated in Nacb. Adenosine agonists injected into Nacb, shift preference towards low effort alternatives. The present studies characterized effort-related effects of caffeine in a concurrent progressive ratio (PROG)/free reinforcer choice procedure that requ

Lifestyle and Occupational Factors Associated with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder Symptoms in Chinese Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) impairs quality of life in reproductive-aged women. Clinical nurses facing high occupational stress and irregular work schedules may be particularly vulnerable. Identifying modifiable risk factors in this population is crucial for developing effective prevention strategies. AIMS: This study aimed to investigate associations between lifestyle factors, work patterns (specifically night shifts), and PMDD symptoms among Chinese female nurses. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,031 Chinese female nurses. Assessments included t

Cognitive functioning of female nurses during the night shift: The impact of age, clock time, time awake and subjective sleepiness.

Decline in cognitive functioning in the workplace is a major concern for health care systems. Understanding factors associated with nighttime functioning is imperative for instituting organizational risk management policies and developing personalized countermeasures. The present study aims to identify individual factors associated with cognitive functioning during the night shift of hospital nurses working on irregular rotating-shift schedules. Ninety-two female nurses were recruited from 17 wards in two general hospitals, using convenience sampling by clusters. Inclusion criteria were workin

Gestational treatment with methylazoxymethanol (MAM) that disrupts hippocampal-dependent memory does not alter behavioural response to cocaine.

Schizophrenia is associated with increased rates of substance abuse that are thought to be the result of changes in cortical and mesolimbic dopamine activity. Previous work has shown that gestational methylazoxymethanol acetate (MAM) treatment induces increased mesolimbic dopamine activity when given around the time of embryonic day 17 (ED17), suggesting that MAM treatment may model some aspects of schizophrenia. Given that increased dopaminergic activity facilitates aspects of drug self-administration and reinstatement of drug seeking, the current experiments sought to assess cocaine self-adm

Efficacy study comparing a CBT-I developed for shift workers (CBT-I-S) to standard CBT-I (cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia) on sleep onset latency, total sleep time, subjective sleep quality, and daytime sleepiness: study protocol for a parallel group randomised controlled trial with online therapy groups of seven sessions each.

BACKGROUND: Shift workers are at an increased risk of developing sleep disorders. The standard therapy recommended for sleep disorders is cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I). Many of its interventions are based on a regular sleep and wake rhythm, which is difficult to apply for shift workers. We have therefore developed a new therapy manual specifically for shift workers (CBT-I-S), which should be more applicable to their needs. In particular, all interventions that require regularity have been removed, and instead, interventions that address factors that proved to be relevant t

Time of Birth and the Risk of Severe Unexpected Complications in Term Singleton Neonates.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether there is a relationship between evening, night, and weekend births and severe unexpected neonatal morbidity in low-risk term singleton births. METHODS: We conducted a population-based, cross-sectional analysis. Severe unexpected neonatal morbidity as defined by the National Quality Forum specification 0716 was derived from linked birth certificate and hospital discharge summaries for 1,048,957 low-risk singleton term Californian births during 2011 through 2013. The association between the nursing shift (7 am-3 pm vs 3-11 pm and 11 pm -7 am) and weekday compared wi
