Restoring a functional and mobile shoulder following reconstruction of the sternoclavicular joint with a free vascularized fibular flap.

Infection of the sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) is rare and often missed at early stage. In extensive disease with bony and soft tissue destruction, radical excision is indicated. The loss of SCJ results in exposure of vital structures of the anterior mediastinum and instability of the shoulder girdle. SCJ reconstruction using locoregional muscle flaps like the pectoralis major or latissimus dorsi flap has been well described. While these options can provide soft tissue coverage, they do not restore the structural framework of the SCJ which is important for shoulder excursion and chest wall move

Shoulder joint replacement can improve quality of life and outcome in patients with dysmelia: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Arthroplasty is a proven treatment option for glenohumeral osteoarthritis. Common indications include primary or posttraumatic osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis of the humeral head, rotator cuff tear arthropathy and rheumatoid osteoarthritis. Arthroplasty is rarely performed among patients with glenohumeral dysmelia. An overuse of the upper limb in patients with thalidomide-induced phocomelia and people with similar congenital deformities like dysmelia results in premature wear of the shoulder joint. This study aims to evaluate our experience with cases of glenohumeral osteoarthri…

Proceedings from the 2025 International Consensus Meeting on Orthopedic Infections: the definition of Shoulder Periprosthetic Joint infection.

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) remains one of the greatest diagnostic and treatment challenges facing shoulder surgeons and their patients. A definition for shoulder PJI was established by the 2018 International Consensus Meeting (ICM) on Orthopedic Infections, but the selection and weighting of its minor criteria relied largely on expert opinion. The purpose of this study was to present an updated, evidence-based definition of shoulder PJI generated by the 2025 ICM Shoulder Group. METHODS: The 2025 ICM Shoulder Group, an international panel of shoulder surgeons and infectio

The influence of rotator cuff tears on muscle and joint-contact loading after reverse total shoulder arthroplasty.

Rotator cuff tears are known to affect clinical outcome of reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RSA). This study aimed to use computational modelling to quantify the effect of rotator cuff tear severity on muscle and joint forces after RSA, as well as stresses at the glenosphere, base-plate, fixation screws, scapula, and humeral components. A multi-body musculoskeletal model of the glenohumeral joint was developed comprising the scapula, humerus and nine major upper limb muscles. Simulations of abduction and flexion after RSA were performed in the case of the intact rotator cuff and tears to (

Shoulder motor performance assessment in the sagittal plane in children with hemiplegia during single joint pointing tasks.

BACKGROUND: Pointing is a motor task extensively used during daily life activities and it requires complex visuo-motor transformation to select the appropriate movement strategy. The study of invariant characteristics of human movements has led to several theories on how the brain solves the redundancy problem, but the application of these theories on children affected by hemiplegia is limited. This study aims at giving a quantitative assessment of the shoulder motor behaviour in children with hemiplegia during pointing tasks. METHODS: Eight children with hemiplegia were involved in the study
