Sources of distress and support were assessed in a prospective study covering 149 couples with a cancer patient on outpatient chemotherapy, with an overall equally high impact of disease. Distress levels in spouses were found as high as in patients, showing a moderate relation within couples. From multivariate regression analyses spouses' distress proved predominantly determined by characteristics of illness. The relationship between alexithymia and defense mechanisms was examined among 66 patients with myocardial infarction. Alexithymia was greater among patients with acute myocardial infarction than among those with old myocardial infarction. Alexithymia was correlated with scores on measures of the defense mechanisms of denial, negation, repression, and reaction formation. The results suggest the possibility that alexithymia may be evident when effective coping mechanisms are employed to minimize the severity of perceived threats or conflicts.

This study examined the hypothesis that older persons who currently report illness from environmental chemical odors (cacosmia) may have experienced higher levels of stress early in life than did noncacosmic controls. In this case report, the hospitalization of a 34-year-old woman with a history of heart disease is described. Arrhythmias and precordial chest pain led to her admission to the coronary care unit. Different therapeutic trials failed. Finally it became obvious that all tachycardias documented by the arrhythmia monitoring system were artifacts, produced by manipulation at the ECG electrodes. After disclosure and confrontation, a psychic misdevelopment in combination with an abuse of analgetics was found.

While researching concepts of neurasthenia as described by patients and physicians of various backgrounds, it was found that there is a great discrepancy between the two groups. Celiac-Sprue Disease, also referred to as Non-Tropical Sprue, is a dietary disease. Celiac-Sprue patients were asked to complete a questionnaire regarding the effect of dietary restrictions on participation in the Passover meal and reception of Communion. Little is known psychometrically about the pattern of cognitive decline associated with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related dementia. Pre- and posttest results are presented to illustrate a case example of rapid cognitive decline. Increased psychometric assessment is recommended with additional examination of inconsistent results, which may be dismissed mistakenly as related to psychiatric symptoms. Implications for clinical practice and the role of the psychologist are discussed.
