[Mechanism of pineal and suprachiasmatic regulation on circadian rhythm of body temperature in rats].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanism of circadian rhythm of skin and core temperature as regulated by pineal and suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in rats. METHOD: Pineal destruction and melatonin interference test were employed. RESULT: The two nuclei functioned differently in the maintenance of the temperature rhythm. Changes of the temperature level were nucleus related, i.e., up-regulated by pineal and down-regulated by SCN. In terms of initiation and daily running of the rhythmic oscillation, pineal is probably the central clock of the skin temperature rhythm, while SCN mainly controls t…

Temperature differences during sleep between fullterm and preterm neonates at matched post-conceptional ages.

OBJECTIVE: Altered physiologic behaviors during sleep have been described for healthy preterm neonates at post-conceptional fullterm ages. These differences may reflect brain dysmaturity as a result of conditions of prematurity. The present study examines if differences in state-specific temperature changes exist in a healthy preterm cohort as another expression of brain dysmaturity. METHODS: Rectal and skin temperatures during sleep state transitions are reported in 59 asymptomatic post-conceptional age term infants, comparing 25 full term and 34 preterm infants. Three-hour 24-channel electr…

Transepidermal water loss in newborn infants. X. Effects of central cold-stimulation on evaporation rate and skin blood flow.

In order to investigate whether sweating and cutaneous vasodilatation. induced by a warm environment, is inhibited by central cold-stimulation, the evaporation rate and skin blood flow were studied by non-invasive techniques before and after the feeding of cold glucose to 17 fullterm appropriate for gestational age infants, born by elective Caesarean section, on their first day after birth. In newborn infants who were visibly sweating and had an increased skin blood flow at a body temperature above 37.1 degrees C, such central cold-stimulation quickly inhibited sweating and decreased skin bloo

Laser Doppler scanning study of palmar skin perfusion for patients with hyperhidrosis before and after thoracic sympathectomy.

BACKGROUND: Palmar hyperhidrosis is effectively treated by thoracic sympathectomy. Previous reports revealed that palmar skin temperature and perfusion increased on focal palmar regions after treatment. This study aimed to investigate the blood flow change over the whole palmar surface after the procedure. METHODS: Thirty patients with severe palmar hyperhidrosis were included for study. Each participant received measurement of palmar skin perfusion by a laser Doppler image scanner 1 day before and 1 day after surgery. Concomitantly, palmar skin temperature was recorded by a contact thermomet…

Scrotal heating stimulates panting and reduces body temperature similarly in febrile and non-febrile rams (Ovis aries).

It is known that heating the ram scrotum stimulates heat loss resulting in a decrease in body temperature and that during fever core temperature increases, but local scrotal thermoeffectors operate to maintain normal scrotal temperature. We have investigated whether scrotal warming influences core body temperature and the panting effector during fever generation. We measured rectal temperature, intrascrotal temperature, scrotal skin temperature and respiratory frequency in four adult Merino rams following intravascular injection of saline or lipopolysaccharide at an ambient temperature of 18-2…

Women exhibit different thermoregulatory responses to meal and cold stimuli compared to men independently of energy expenditure and body composition.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Meal-induced thermogenesis (MIT) and cold-induced thermogenesis (CIT) are components of adaptive thermogenesis, both pote … meal and cold exposure tests. Body composition was determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Skin temperature was continuously monitored using wireless sensors. RESULTS: EE increased after both meal intake and cold exposure (both P < 0.01) in men and women. During MIT, women exhibited higher mean and proximal skin temperatures than men (P < 0.04). Similar …

Infrared-A (IR-A) modulates the p53 pathway and diurnal clock in human skin and subcutaneous adipose tissue in vivo.

Infrared-A (IR-A) radiation is thought to protect the skin from damage due to ultraviolet radiation and alter its carcinogenic potential, possibly by preventing keratinocyte apoptosis via p53 pathway modulation. Solar radiation, including IR-A, is a major factor in contributing to the entrainment of circadian rhythms. We examined the impacts of IR-A on the intrinsic clock and transcriptomics in individuals with different diurnal preference to understand the mechanisms by which IR-A acts in the human skin and subcutaneous adipose tissue. IR-A caused multiple gene expressional changes, mainly as

Wearable 3D-Printed Microneedle Sensor for Intradermal Temperature Monitoring.

Accurate temperature monitoring plays a crucial role in understanding the physiological status of patients and the early diagnosis of diseases commonly associated with local and global infections. Intradermal temperature measurement is, in principle, more precise than skin surface detection, as it prevents interference from environmental temperature changes and skin secretions. However, to date, precise and reliable intradermal temperature monitoring in a real-time and continuous manner remains a challenge. We propose herein high-resolution 3D printing to fabricate a mechanically robust and bi

Skin thermal dynamics and hypothalamic thermosensitivity dissociate REM sleep and cataplexy in narcolepsy.

Narcolepsy is caused by hypothalamic hypocretin/orexin loss and characterized by cataplexy, a unique brain state triggered by emotion. Catap … hether REM sleep and cataplexy share thermomodulatory mechanisms. Here, we demonstrate that reduced skin temperatures and a widening of the distal-to-proximal skin temperature gradient precede cataplexy in both patients with narcolepsy and hypocretin-knockout (Hcrt-KO) narcoleptic mice. To test a causal role for skin temperature in cataplexy modulation, thermoneut …

Does the temperature gradient correlate with the photodynamic diagnosis parameter numerical colour value (NCV)?

BACKGROUND: Photodynamic diagnosis (PDD) as well as thermovision belong to the category of non-invasive optical diagnosis techniques. Among many different skin cancer diseases, basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring one (almost 95% of all skin tumours). In contrast, seborrhoeic keratosis represents almost 70% of benign skin tumours. In this paper we present infrared thermography as an additional method, combined with PDD, to show the differentiation between these two skin mutations. METHODS: The photodynamic diagnosis studies were performed by using the autofluorescence d
