Smoking behavior and interest in quitting among homeless smokers.

OBJECTIVES: To examine smoking behavior in homeless persons, including the impact of self-reported tobacco-related health problems and drug and alcohol abuse on readiness to quit and interest in smoking cessation counseling. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey of outpatients and inpatients on the homeless service at Massachusetts General Hospital. RESULTS: Among 98 homeless smokers with a mean age of 44 years, tobacco-related medical diagnoses and symptoms and psychiatric illnesses were common, as were drug and alcohol abuse. One third of the smokers in this sample intended to quit smoking withi

Alcohol consumption modifies the total lung capacity in smokers.

Smoking-related airflow obstruction can develop with or without emphysema. Moderate alcohol consumption has been suggested to diminish the risk of centrilobular emphysema caused by smoking. Our aim was to study the influence of total energy and nutrient (protein, fat, carbohydrate and alcohol) intake on smoking-related emphysema. Lung function and nutrient intake including alcohol consumption were recorded at age of 68 years in 478 men as part of the population study 'Men Born in 1914' in Malmö, Sweden. In nonsmokers (n = 88) and ex-smokers (n = 223), there were no significant relationships be

Elevated nicotine levels in cervical lavages from passive smokers.

One hundred forty-five nonsmokers found to have normal cytologic diagnoses on routine Pap smears were interviewed regarding environmental exposure to tobacco smoke, and a 3 ml saline lavage of the cervix was collected for measurement of cervical nicotine levels by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy. Nicotine levels tended to be highest among women exposed to tobacco smoke in the home, intermediate in women exposed only outside the home, and lowest in women recalling no exposure (p = 0.001).

Airway responses to methacholine in asymptomatic nonatopic cigarette smokers.

We prospectively performed methacholine bronchoprovocation challenges on 46 young smokers to examine the effects of cigarette smoking on airway responsiveness. The subjects, ages 18-35 yr, had no past or present history or physical examination findings of asthma or other lung diseases, rhinitis, allergic diseases, or respiratory infections; were skin test negative to 29 common aeroallergens; and had base-line pulmonary function values greater than 80% predicted. Sixteen of 46 (35%) subjects had a 20% or greater drop in forced expiratory volume in 1 s at a provocative methacholine concentration

Drug Survival of Biological Therapies in Smokers and Non-Smokers With Psoriasis: A Retrospective Cohort Study Using Data From the Australasian Psoriasis Registry.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is a modifiable risk factor that increases the likelihood of developing psoriasis and the severity of the disease. In recent years, biological therapies have transformed the management of psoriasis. There is conflicting evidence about whether smoking affects the efficacy of biologics. The aim of this study was to assess drug survival and the efficacy of the first biologic for psoriasis in smokers compared with non-smokers. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study using data from the Australasian Psoriasis Registry. Participants with psoriasis who met Pharmaceutical B

The 2016 Tips From Former Smokers® Campaign: Associations With Quit Intentions and Quit Attempts Among Smokers With and Without Mental Health Conditions.

INTRODUCTION: People living with mental health conditions (MH+) are more likely to smoke cigarettes than people without mental health conditions (MH-) and to experience tobacco-related disparities. The Tips From Former Smokers® (Tips®) campaign is a proven population-level strategy for motivating smokers to quit. In 2016, Tips included ads featuring Rebecca, a former smoker with depression. We evaluated self-reported frequency of exposure to the Rebecca and other Tips ads in association with quit intentions and quit attempts among MH+ and MH- smokers. METHODS: Intentions to quit and past 6-mo

Smoking and Promoter-Specific Deoxyribonucleic Acid Methylation of the Atrial Natriuretic Peptide Gene: Methylation of Smokers and Non-Smokers Differs Significantly during Withdrawal.

BACKGROUND: Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is well known in psychiatric disorders to modulate hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity. Disturbances of ANP have been described in early abstinent alcohol-dependent patients. This is the first longitudinal investigation on cytosine-phosphatidyl-guanine (CpG)-island promoter methylation of the ANP gene in the blood of tobacco-dependent patients. METHODS: In a longitudinal approach, we investigated whether changes in ANP serum levels correlated to CpG methylation of the respective gene promoters on days 1, 7, and 14 of tobacco withdrawal. R

GCF MMP-8 levels in smokers and non-smokers with chronic periodontitis following scaling and root planing accompanied by systemic use of flurbiprofen.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking has been identified as an important risk factor for the initiation and progression of chronic periodontitis (CP). The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of phase I periodontal therapy and adjunctive flurbiprofen administration on matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-8 levels in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) samples from smoking and non-smoking patients with CP. METHODS: Twenty-nine non-smoking and 29 smoking patients with CP were divided into four groups according to periodontal treatment modalities. Group 1 (non-smokers with CP) and group 3 (smokers wi

Longitudinal effect of non-surgical treatment and systemic metronidazole for 1 week in smokers and non-smokers with refractory periodontitis: a 5-year study.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis consists of a mixture of diseases, most of which respond favorably to traditional mechanical therapy. It is now recognized that advanced periodontitis does not always respond to conventional management with scaling, periodontal surgery, and oral hygiene measures. However, various types of antibiotics given systemically or locally improve the success rate of periodontal therapy. In short-term studies, it has been shown that metronidazole, when systemically administered after debridement, resulted in treatment benefits including less need for surgical intervention. MET

Risk factors and biomarkers for post-tuberculosis lung damage in a Chinese cohort of male smokers and non-smokers: protocol for a prospective observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Post-tuberculosis lung damage (PTLD) refers to the residual pulmonary impairment following the completion of antituberculosis (TB) therapy, characterised by persistent respiratory symptoms and abnormal pulmonary function. The risk factors and biomarkers for PTLD have been scarcely investigated. More importantly, whether and to what extent cigarette smoking is involved in PTLD remain to be known. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This prospective observational study will enrol 400 male smoking or non-smoking patients aged 25-65 years, with newly confirmed active TB between 2022 and 2024, fro

A cross-sectional survey investigating the desensitisation of graphic health warning labels and their impact on smokers, non-smokers and patients with COPD in a London cohort.

OBJECTIVES: There is a lack of evidence regarding the effectiveness of graphic health warning labels (GHWL) in different individuals, including patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Investigating knowledge and attitudes may allow better implementation of future public health policies. We hypothesised that differences in the impact of GHWL exist between non-smokers, smokers and patients with COPD, with decreased efficacy in those groups who are longer and more frequently exposed to them. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: 163 participants (54% male, aged 21-80) including 60 non-sm

The effects of smoking on labour after uncomplicated pregnancy: a comparison between the progress and outcome of labour in 400 smokers and 400 matched non-smokers.

A comparison was made between the progress of labour and its outcome after an uncomplicated pregnancy, in 400 smokers and 400 non-smokers. Strict selection criteria were applied to eliminate, as far as possible, the variables which might have influenced labour in both groups and to ensure that the two groups of women were matched. The duration of labour was longer in smokers, who also had a higher incidence of caesarean sections. Smokers had a higher incidence of retained placenta and postpartum haemorrhage. The neonates of smokers had a higher incidence of problems in the immediate post-deliv

Unusual Suspect Causing Cavitary Pneumonia in a Vape Smoker.

Actinomyces species are facultative anaerobic bacteria that are part of the normal flora of the human oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, and vaginal tract. These bacteria are known to cause actinomycosis, a rare chronic granulomatous infection that typically presents as a slowly progressive disease. Pulmonary actinomycosis, although rare, has long been recognized as a distinct form of pneumonia, typically affecting individuals with underlying risk factors such as poor oral hygiene, aspiration risk, pre-existing lung disease, or immunocompromising conditions. The recent surge in electronic ci
