BACKGROUND: Leiomyomas of the gastrointestinal tract (GI) are benign smooth muscle neoplasms with limited genetic characterization. Molecular investigations may improve diagnostic classification and enhance understanding of their biological behavior.
METHODS: RNA sequencing using multiple fusion-detection algorithms was performed on an ileal leiomyoma. Key findings were validated by RT-PCR and Sanger sequencing.
RESULTS: A MYH11::GLI3 fusion was identified. Additional chimeric transcripts were detected but interpreted as secondary events based on limited read support. The biological relevanc

Uterine smooth muscle tumors include a broad range of neoplasms, from benign leiomyomas (LMs) to malignant leiomyosarcomas (LMS), as well as intermediate forms classified as Smooth Muscle Tumors of Uncertain Malignant Potential (STUMP). An accurate diagnosis of these tumor types is essential for their appropriate clinical management; however, it remains challenging due to possible overlapping of histological features. In this study, a multidisciplinary approach combining Fourier Transform Infrared Imaging (FTIRI) spectroscopy, a label-free and non-destructive analytical technique, with histolo

Stromal tumors are singled out from smooth muscle and neurogenic neoplasms into a special group due to differences in CD117 expression caused by mutation of c-kit gene. Out of 57 stromal tumors, 37 (64,9%) located in the stomach, 17 (29,8%) in the small intestine and 3 (5,3%) in the colon. Immunohistochemically, all the tumors expressed CD117 and vimentine. Smooth muscle actin was found in 82% tumors, S-100 protein in 75%, neuron-specific enolase in 66% cases. Malignant tumors were in 93% cases, and in 7% benign. Metastases were observed in 47.7% cases, recurrences in 14%. The liver was most f

We report a hepatic tumor in an adolescent that does not fit into any of the described categories of liver tumors. The patient presented with hepatomegaly, abdominal pain, and normal liver function test; the tumor was cystic in imaging studies. The resected specimen, result of a partial hepatectomy, measured 21 cm and was multicystic with solid areas. Microscopically, the cysts were lined by a mucous-producing or intestinal-type epithelium, associated with smooth muscle and small mucous-producing glands. The solid component contained fibrous and adipose tissue, smooth muscle and thick-walled v

Leiomyoma is a benign smooth muscle tumor that occurs most frequently in the uterine myometrium, gastrointestinal tract, skin, and lower extremities. Leiomyoma rarely affects the oral cavity. Angioleiomyoma (vascular leiomyoma) is a histological subtype of the leiomyoma. The diagnosis is commonly determined by histopathological studies. This case report shows a 57-year-old male patient with a lesion of the lower lip. After laser excision, hematoxylin and eosin and smooth muscle actin staining confirmed the diagnosis of angioleiomyoma.

BACKGROUND: An unusual case of cavernous hemangioma coexisting with venous angioma in the ipsilateral orbit is described.
CASE: A 67-year-old woman had a mass in the lower eyelid of her right eye and proptosis. Imaging examinations showed two masses connected to each other in the extraconal space of the right orbit.
OBSERVATIONS: Anterior orbitotomy was performed to remove the tumors. Histopathological evaluation of the anteriorly located tumor revealed cavernous hemangioma. The posteriorly located tumor was found to be a venous angioma. Endothelial cells in both tumors showed positive immun

BACKGROUND: Primary adrenal leiomyosarcoma is a rare and aggressive mesenchymal tumor derived from the smooth muscle wall of a central adrenal vein or its tributaries; therefore, tumors tend to invade the inferior vena cava and cause thrombosis. The great majority of tumors grow rapidly, which makes the disease difficult to diagnose in its early clinical stages and needs differentiation from adrenocortical carcinomas for the selection of chemotherapy including mitotane which causes adrenal insufficiency.
CASE PRESENTATION: We presented two patients with adrenal leiomyosarcoma who were referre

OBJECTIVE: To describe the pathologic features in four cases of hepatic angiomyolipoma, a rare benign mesenchymal tumor of the liver.
DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of surgical specimens from four patients, with immunohistochemical and flow cytometric studies.
RESULTS: None of the patients carried a diagnosis of tuberous sclerosis. All four tumors were large and well circumscribed, and one patient had multiple lesions. The neoplasms were composed of numerous vessels and exhibited a predominance of epithelioid smooth muscle cells. The low amount of fat in these four cases was not sufficient t

Dear Editor, Cutaneous leiomyomas (CL) are rare, benign smooth muscle tumors of the skin (1). There are 3 subtypes with different origins and histopathologic features: piloleiomyoma, genital leiomyoma, and angioleiomyoma (2). Pilar leiomyoma is the most common subtype originating from arrector pili muscles of pilosebaceous unit. It presents as painful solitary or multiple papulonodules (2,3). A 30-year-old woman presented to our outpatient clinic with numerous painless, itchy papules on her gluteal region that had been present for 10 years. Dermatologic examination revealed red-brown, smooth,

CONTEXT: Desmoid tumors arising in the lung and pleura are extremely rare and can resemble other, more common neoplasms native to these sites. Alterations of the adenomatous polyposis coli/beta-catenin pathway have been detected in sporadic desmoid tumors and have been associated with nuclear accumulation of beta-catenin and overexpression of cyclin D1.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the expression of beta-catenin and cyclin D1 in desmoid tumors and solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs), and to compare the utilities of these substances for distinguishing between these entities with those of other, more commo

Angiomyolipoma (AML) is a benign tumor comprised of a mixture of vessels ("angio"), smooth muscle ("myo"), and adipose tissue ("lipo"). It belongs to a group of unusual mesenchymal tumors with myogenic and melanocytic differentiation known as perivascular epithelioid cell tumors. AMLs are commonly sporadic tumors but may be associated with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) and/or lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). The imaging appearance of AMLs strongly correlates with the pathologic findings. Fat is detectable in the vast majority of AMLs, and these tumors are referred to as classic AMLs. Fat-poo

Pulmonary hamartoma (PH) is usually a solid mass of less than 4 cm in size that contains cartilage omponents. A 44-year-old Japanese woman received surgical resection of a well-demarcated cystic tumor in the right lung. Resected tissue contained a 13 × 10 × 8 cm-sized solid mass with a prominent unilocular cyst (8 × 6.5 × 5 cm). The tumor was composed of a dominant smooth muscle cell (SMC) component with entrapped glandular respiratory epithelium. There was little cartilaginous or fatty tissue. Immunohistochemically, SMC was positive for smooth muscle actin (SMA) and desmin, as well as CD34. W

Epithelioid angiomyolipoma (EAML) is a rare renal mesenchymal tumor with malignant potential and is frequently associated with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). As metastasis of the tumor cells occur early, EAML is considered a potentially malignant tumor type and intrigues further research on it. Under the microscope, we could find the tumor was composed of atypical polygonal cells sheet mixed with classic angiomyolipoma (AML) components such as blood vessels with notable thick vascular walls, smooth muscle-like cells and adipocytes. Immunohistochemical studies showed that epithelioid cells w

Myopericytoma is a benign mesenchymal neoplasm thought to comprise part of a spectrum of perivascular myoid cell neoplasms with myofibroma, angioleiomyoma, and glomus tumor. We describe 2 such neoplasms involving the urinary tract: 1 incidentally identified in the kidney of a 59-year-old woman and 1 in the urinary bladder of a 52-year-old woman who presented with urinary frequency and dysuria. Histologically, the bladder tumor was composed of numerous blood vessels surrounded by plump perivascular myoid cells, as in subcutaneous myopericytoma. The renal tumor showed similar morphology centrall

Angiomyolipomas (AML) are mesenchymal tumors of the kidney consisting of varying proportions of vascular, immature smooth muscle and mature fat cells. A rare case of testicular AML is described. A 53 year old male with a history of congenital motor defects, mental retardation, and hypertension, presented to the emergency room with sudden onset, severe left testicular pain. Scrotal sonography demonstrated an hypoechoic mass in the patient's left testicle. The patient was offered and underwent a trans-inguinal exploration of the left testicle which ended in a left inguinal orchiectomy. Pathologi

Ultrastructual observations on an unusual gonadal stromal tumor of the testis in a 4-year-old boy with gynecomastia revealed that the tumor cells lacked the abundant smooth endoplasmic reticulum usually found in neoplastic and nonneoplastic Sertoli and Leydig cells. The cells were rich in cytoplasmic microfilaments, with localized dense areas of the type seen in smooth muscle cells as well as intracytoplasmic lipid droplets. It is concluded that the tumor cells show important similarities to the immature fusiform interstitial cells and the peritubular contractile cells present in the normal te

This study presents the ultrastructural and immunohistochemical findings of a gastric bizarre leiomyoma arising in the vestibule of a 79-year-old male. Histologically, loosely proliferating tumor cells consist of large, multinucleated, bizarre nuclei with intranuclear inclusions and abundant cytoplasm-containing vacuoles. A murky line was apparent between the tumor cells and eosinophilic and heterogenous stroma-like areas. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells exhibited positively stained dot patterns of α-smooth muscle actin and caldesmon, which were distributed in the cytoplasm of tumor cells a

Leiomyomas, benign tumors of well-differentiated smooth muscle and vascular collagenous tissue, usually occur in the uterus but can develop wherever smooth muscle is present. Primary intracranial leiomyomas are rare tumors. We present the case of a 40-year-old woman with a primary intraventricular leiomyoma. She consulted us for headache, dizziness, and black spots in her vision. Magnetic resonance images (MRI) disclosed a mass rooted in the posterior septum pellucidum. The tumor was totally excised by the senior author with no residual seen on intraoperative MRI. Pathological examination show
