Women's soccer injuries in relation to the menstrual cycle and oral contraceptive use.

During 1984, 86 women soccer players answered detailed questionnaires concerning contraceptive use, menstruation data, premenstrual and menstrual symptoms, and data concerning soccer activities including injuries. This prospective study showed that women soccer players were more susceptible to traumatic injuries during the premenstrual and menstrual period compared to the rest of the menstrual cycle (P less than 0.05), especially among players with premenstrual symptoms such as irritability/irascibility, swelling/discomfort in the breasts, and swelling/congestion in the abdomen. It was also fo…

Leukocyte Morphology Changes during Preseason in Elite Soccer Players: A Pilot Study.

Monitoring internal physiological responses in elite soccer players remains challenging due to the limitations of subjective scales and nonspecific biomarkers. This study examined whether leukocyte morphology and endothelial stress markers respond to acute exercise and a 6-week preseason training program in elite soccer players and explored their potential utility for objective athlete monitoring. Twenty-two male outfield players were assessed at baseline (48 h pre-preseason), immediately after a maximal Yo-Yo intermittent running test, and 72 hours after the preseason period. Leukocyte volume…

Cutting Technique of Soccer Players After ACLR: On-Field Matched Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures in soccer most commonly occur during cutting maneuvers with noncontact injury mechanisms. Biomechanical assessment of the cutting technique has become a critical component of return-to-sport (RTS) evaluation after ACL injury, particularly in young football players at elevated risk of reinjury. However, the cutting technique in players with ACL reconstruction (ACLR) has never been examined under sport-specific conditions. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: This study aimed to evaluate the cutting technique in pediatric soccer players who had ACLR after RT…

Cognitive functioning and soccer heading: one-year longitudinal assessment among professional players.

BACKGROUND: Soccer is the most popular sport worldwide, and the only one in which players purposely and repetitively use their head to hit the ball. In recent years, more attention has been given to subconcussive impacts, which are characterized by a cranial impact that does not result in known or diagnosed concussion on clinical grounds. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of soccer heading on cognitive functioning among professional soccer players. METHODS: In a longitudinal case-control study, 22 professional soccer players were compared with 37 non-athletes on 2 occasions (T0 and T1) s…

Video Confirmation of Head Impact Sensor Data From High School Soccer Players.

BACKGROUND: Recent advances in technology have enabled the development of head impact sensors, which provide a unique opportunity for sports medicine researchers to study head kinematics in contact sports. Studies have suggested that video or observer confirmation of head impact sensor data is required to remove false positives. In addition, manufacturer filtering algorithms may be ineffective in identifying true positives and removing true negatives. PURPOSE: To (1) identify the percentage of video-confirmed events recorded by headband-mounted sensors in high school soccer through video anal…

Isolated HAGL lesion after arthroscopic Bankart repair in a professional soccer player.

Post-traumatic anterior shoulder instability commonly occurs following an avulsion of capsulolabral complex from glenoid (Bankart lesion) or rarely after humeral avulsion of the glenohumeral ligaments (HAGL lesion). Arthroscopic Bankart repair offers high success rates of healing. However, trauma following the treatment may cause implant failure or re-avulsion of the treated tissue. We aim to present the diagnosis and treatment of an isolated HAGL lesion in a professional soccer player who had previously undergone arthroscopic Bankart repair.

Bilateral piriformis syndrome in two elite soccer players: Report of two cases.

Piriformis syndrome, a relatively rare condition, is described as entrapment of a sciatic nerve at the level of the piriformis muscle. There have been a few reports of bilateral piriformis syndrome in literature. In this study, we present bilateral piriformis syndrome in two professional soccer players from different teams who are symptom free at last follow-up after surgery. In both patients, resting EMG records were read normal, however EMG recording during the activity revealed prolonged H-reflexes. Both patients had no relief from conservative treatment and rehabilitation, therefore surgic…
