Harnessing Egocentric Networks to Inform an Enhanced Social Network Strategy in a Southern US "Ending the HIV Epidemic" Region.

BACKGROUND: The HIV epidemic in the United States disproportionately affects sexual and gender minority (SGM) communities. Social networks shape health behaviors. Understanding the structure and dynamics of SGM networks could enhance engagement with HIV-related services. METHODS: We analyzed egocentric social networks of SGM individuals in Charlotte, North Carolina, who engaged in HIV-related services. Participants (egos) identified social connections (alters) from the past 6 months. Networks were stratified based on the size of the ego's sexual network (0-1 vs. ≥2), defined as the subset of

Schools as Neighborhoods: A Holistic Framework for Student Well-Being, Opportunity, and Social Success.

BACKGROUND: Schools play a central role in child development and socialization and can function as protective environments that mitigate the effects of adversity. Building on the Social Ecological Model and Community School Transformation, we propose a "Schools-as-Neighborhoods" framework that conceptualizes schools as intentionally designed microenvironments capable of generating social capital, promoting positive childhood experiences, and buffering harmful neighborhood exposures through trauma-informed programming. METHODS: We conducted a convergent mixed-methods study across four public a

Effects of multidomain environmental and mental health factors on the development of empathetic behaviors and emotions in adolescence.

Empathy is at the core of our social world, yet multidomain factors that affect its development in socially sensitive periods, such as adolescence, are incompletely understood. To address this gap, this study investigated associations between social, environmental and mental health factors, and their temporal changes, on adolescent empathetic behaviors/emotions and, for comparison, callous unemotional (CU) traits and behaviors, in the early longitudinal Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development sample (baseline: n = 11062; 2-year follow-up: n = 9832, median age = 119 and 144 months, respectively)

Development and external validation of a risk calculator to predict internalising symptoms among Ugandan youths affected by HIV.

The aim of the study was to develop and externally validate a model to predict individualized risk of internalizing symptoms among AIDS-affected youths in low-resource settings in sub-Saharan Africa. Longitudinal data from 558 Ugandan adolescents orphaned by AIDS was used to develop our predictive model. Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator logistic regression was used to select the best subset of predictors using 10-fold cross-validation. External validation of the final model was conducted in a sample of 372 adolescents living with HIV in Uganda. Best predictors for internalizing

The effect of alienation on depression among Chinese caregivers of children with autism: family resilience as a moderator.

BACKGROUND: Caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in China often encounter stigma and social isolation, which may heighten alienation and increase depression risk. Family resilience-the strengths and resources within the family system, may help protect caregiver mental health. This study examined the association between alienation and depression among Chinese caregivers of children with ASD and tested whether family resilience moderates this relationship. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 205 caregivers in Jilin Province assessed alienation, depressive symptoms, and fa

Government environmental regulation and farmers' engagement in traditional folk practices: the mediating roles of ecological cognition and social norms.

INTRODUCTION: As an important carrier of cultural identity and community cohesion in rural Chinese society, traditional folk activities often generate tensions with modern ecological protection goals due to their resource-intensive characteristics. This study takes the millennium-old "Firecracker Lion Dance" activity in Deqing County, Guangdong Province, as a research case to explore how government environmental regulation influences farmers' willingness to participate in the Sustainable Firecracker-Lion Dance Custom, with a particular focus on the mediating roles of social norms and ecologica

Looking through different lenses at meeting places in disadvantaged Dutch neighbourhoods: A qualitative participatory study assessing needs, barriers and success elements for women with non-Western migration backgrounds and teenage girls.

OBJECTIVE: The living environment can significantly influence health negatively, particularly in disadvantaged neighbourhoods where risk factors and limited resources converge. Social cohesion and inclusive meeting places promote well-being, yet little is known about what makes these spaces accessible and meaningful for specific groups. This study explored how neighbourhood meeting places can better align with the needs of two often underrepresented groups: women with a non-Western migration background and teenage girls (12-18 years old), in four disadvantaged Dutch neighbourhoods. METHODS: A…

An exploration of organisational culture in a regional trauma network, in Northern Ireland.

Background: Working directly with traumatised individuals can result in secondary traumatic stress and vicarious trauma in staff. Less research has been conducted into the impact of working with trauma on an organisation, including teams and structures. The population of Northern Ireland has a history of socio-political conflict, and trauma services may be uniquely impacted due to the dual personal and professional exposure to trauma. This research explores the organisational culture of a trauma service in Northern Ireland, investigating 'What are the tangible and intangible elements of organi
