Oxytocin (Oxt) plays a crucial role in forming stable social bonds and promoting social interactions in both humans and animals. During the long history of domestication, dogs have evolved advanced social communication, empathy, and a remarkable ability to perceive and respond to human emotions. Given the effective and intimate social interactions between dogs and humans, the laboratory Beagle dogs have been utilized to model mental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Indeed, ASD-associated Shank3 mutant dogs show impaired social interaction with both conspecifics and heterospeci

BACKGROUND: There continues to be public concern that mercury exposure and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may be associated. The primary source of exposure to organic mercury in humans is to methylmercury from fish consumption. We evaluated the association between prenatal methylmercury exposure and ASD phenotype in children and adolescents in the Republic of Seychelles, where fish consumption is high.
METHODS: We administered the Social Communication Questionnaire to parents of a cohort of 1784 children, adolescents, and young adults. The Social Responsiveness Scale was administered to teach

Autism spectrum disorder and psychotic disorders, although clinically distinct, share overlapping characteristics, particularly in the domain of social cognition. Both autistic traits and psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) are increasingly conceptualized as existing along a continuum within the general population. Empathy, a fundamental aspect of social cognition, is commonly associated with both conditions. This study examined the relationships among autistic traits, PLEs, and empathy in a large general-population sample of preadolescents using network analysis. Data were drawn from the Adoles

INTRODUCTION: Few studies on social skills training essentially based on ABA techniques are dedicated to children with autism aged 5 to 10 years whereas autistic disorders can be diagnosed in very early childhood. Generally, the main criticisms about these social skills training are: shortness of programs (around 20 sessions), no manual with precise descriptions of sessions and used techniques, and a lack of generalization of the learned skills in everyday life.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the evolution (before/after) of symptoms and sociocommunicative skills of 7 children with autism and no ment

OBJECTIVE: This prospective study characterized parents' concerns about infants at high risk for developing autism spectrum disorder (ASD; each with an older sibling with ASD) at multiple time points in the first 2 years, and assessed their relation to diagnostic outcome at 3 years.
METHOD: Parents of low-risk controls (LR) and high-risk infant siblings (HR) reported any concerns that they had regarding their children's development between 6 and 24 months of age regarding sleep, diet, sensory behavior, gross/fine motor skills, repetitive movements, communication, communication regression, soc

To fulfill the criteria for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), symptoms must be present across domains and contexts. We assessed preschool staff's ratings of social communication and interaction (SCI) and restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRBs) in 3-year-old siblings of children with ASD, either diagnosed (n = 12) or not diagnosed (n = 36) with ASD, and typically developing siblings with no family history of ASD (n = 16). Ratings of SCI were more accurate than RRBs in differentiating the ASD group from the two other groups, and only the SCI ratings correlated with clinical assessment of social

This study examined whether disruptions in connectivity involving regions critical for learning, planning, and executing movements are relevant to core autism symptoms. Spatially constrained ICA was performed using resting-state fMRI from 419 children (autism spectrum disorder (ASD) = 105; typically developing (TD) = 314) to identify functional motor subdivisions. Comparing the spatial organization of each subdivision between groups, we found voxels that contributed significantly less to the right posterior cerebellar component in children with ASD versus TD (P <0.001). Next, we examined the e

Multiple family group (MFG) therapy is a psychoeducational intervention designed for caregivers of individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). This study is the first to compare MFG therapy with treatment as usual (TAU). The objectives were to assess MFG therapy's impact on caregivers' social functioning, perceived support from mental health professionals, coping and communication skills development, and overall satisfaction with the program. A randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted at the West Community Mental Health Center in Bologna, Italy. This study enrolled 57 caregi

The etiology of the Autistic Spectrum Disorders is discussed with a focus on Asperger's disorder. The manifestation of the triad of social impairment, communication impairment, and restricted repetitive behaviors and interests is discussed in terms of the various symptom phenotypes comprising these three domains. Clinical case material is used to illustrate how the treatment modality utilized should be fitted to an individual child's needs. A multimodal treatment plan is considered optimal in order to achieve a successful therapeutic outcome.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder affecting over 2% of the global population, marked by social communication deficits and repetitive behaviors. Kabatas et al explored the efficacy and safety of Wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cell (WJ-MSC) therapy in a 4-year-old child with ASD. Using the childhood autism rating scale and Denver II developmental screening test, significant improvements were seen after six WJ-MSC sessions, with no adverse events over 2 years. Despite promising results, the study's single-case design limits generalizability. Larger,

This article provides a selective review of advances in scientific knowledge about autism spectrum disorder (ASD), using DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition) diagnostic criteria as a framework for the discussion. We review literature that prompted changes to the organization of ASD symptoms and diagnostic subtypes in DSM-IV, and we examine the rationale for new DSM-5 specifiers, modifiers, and severity ratings as well as the introduction of the diagnosis of social (pragmatic) communication disorder. Our goal is to summarize and critically consider the co

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impairment in two behavioral domains: social interaction/communication together with the presence of stereotyped behaviors and restricted interests. The heterogeneity in the phenotype among patients and the complex etiology of the disorder have long impeded the advancement of the development of successful pharmacotherapies. However, in the recent years, the integration of findings of multiple levels of research, from human genetics to mouse models, have made considerable progress towards the understanding of ASD pathophysiology, allowing the d

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder diagnosed on the basis of three behaviorally altered domains: social deficits, impaired language and communication, and stereotyped and repetitive behaviors. The early recognition of the disorder, as early as 2 years, is an important challenge, because early treatments are more efficient in helping children to develop their adaptation skills, allowing their better integration in the society, with less suffering and a lower level of handicap. Therefore, we describe the symptoms that may lead first degree practitioners to suspect autistic disorders as earl

For many individuals with Tourette, navigating everyday judgments from strangers and peers alike can be as much of a challenge as the tics. Tourette-awareness campaigns and the rise of social media support communities have done significant work to improve the public's understanding and acceptance of tic disorders, but individuals living with it still experience unfortunate misunderstandings about their tics -- sometimes in sensitive environments, like airports -- which makes for a nervous base-pressure that "Touretters" can feel in their day-to-day and which can inflame their ticcing. Social d

As is evident from the topic of this issue, schools can play an important role in addressing the unmet mental health needs of youth. Social anxiety disorder is particularly suited to being treated in the school setting. This article describes an empirically supported school-based intervention for social anxiety disorder, skills for academic and social success, and provides specific strategies to school counselors, teachers and community practitioners for implementing these methods. This article focuses on practical approaches for working with socially anxious adolescents in the school setting

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cognitive-communication disorder (CCD) is common after acquired brain injury (ABI), reported in about two-thirds of people who sustain an injury. Quantitative studies have found that the disorder can negatively impact a person's ability to socially re-integrate into the community, return to work or education and achieve a good quality of life. However, little is known about how the disorder impacts people with ABI and the family. Therefore, the aim of this qualitative evidence synthesis was to provide a detailed exploration of the lived experience of CCD for people w

Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disability characterized by impaired social communication and repetitive behaviors, and environmental and genetic factors are involved in its onset. The use of the antiepileptic drug valproic acid (VPA) during pregnancy is associated with neural tube defects and developmental disorders in the fetus. In this study, we aimed to identify abnormalities in cortical morphogenesis owing to prenatal VPA exposure and to elucidate the abnormalities in brain function associated with these abnormalities, particularly by comparing multiple and single environments

OBJECTIVE: To understand diagnostic communication preferences of patients with schwannomatosis, a rare disease.
METHODS: Eighteen adults with schwannomatosis from across the United States participated in semi-structured phone interviews about their diagnostic experiences. Interview transcripts were inductively coded using thematic analysis.
RESULTS: We identified three elements of effective diagnostic communication: education (particularly about etiology, prognosis, and treatment options); psychological support (to cope with the new diagnosis and any prior diagnostic harms); and efforts to d

A wide body of evidence suggests a relationship between maternal immune activation (MIA) and neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Since social and communicative deficits are included in the first diagnostic criterion of ASD, we aimed to characterize socio-communicative behaviors in the MIA model based on prenatal exposure to poly(I:C). Our previous studies demonstrated impaired socio-communicative functioning in poly(I:C)-exposed adolescent rats. Therefore, the current study sought to clarify whether these changes would persist beyond adolescence. For this purpo

Anxiety-related problems are among the most frequently reported mental health difficulties in autism spectrum disorder. As most research has focused on clinical samples or high-functioning children with autism spectrum disorder, less is known about the factors associated with anxiety in community samples across the ability range. This cross-sectional study examined the association of gender, age, adaptive functioning and autism symptom severity with different caregiver-reported anxiety symptoms. Participants were caregivers of 241 children (6-18 years old) with autism spectrum disorder attendi
