Beyond behaviour: rethinking integration for people experiencing homelessness.

Integration is one of the main goals of homeless services. Despite the growing research on integration and homelessness, few studies start with the perspective of people experiencing homelessness. Integration is often measured as participation in a list of standard behaviours. This process assesses behaviour in accordance with social norms but ignores people's own feelings and understanding of integration. The main aim of this study is to explore the meaning of integration from the perspective of people experiencing homelessness. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews involving

Social distancing predicts suicide rates: Analysis of the 1918 flu pandemic in 43 large cities, research note.

Social distancing (e.g., school and business closings) has been emphasized in current sociopolitical efforts in controlling COVID-19. Such policies are assumed to increase suicide risk through lowering social integration. While two studies have linked the presence of a pandemic to suicide rates, no study has assessed the degree of social distancing on suicide rates during a pandemic. The present study fills this gap with data on the extent of social distancing during the Spanish flu epidemic in 43 large cities. The results find that increasing social distancing increases suicide rates independ…

The Role of Compassion and Self-Compassion in Community Integration and Emotional Well-Being: A Systematic Review Focused on Homelessness.

Homelessness is widely regarded as one of the most severe forms of social exclusion and represents an urgent public health challenge. Notably, compassion has been proposed as a construct of social cognition closely linked to emotional well-being and as a facilitator of community integration. Although the importance of compassion within intervention teams and public attitudes toward people experiencing homelessness (PEH) has been emphasized, little is known about the processes of compassion and self-compassion among PEH. Hence, a systematic review was conducted with two main objectives: (a) to

Distal supports, capabilities, and growth-focused recovery: A comparison of Housing First and the staircase continuum of care.

Adults who have substantial histories of homelessness and complex support needs may feel ambivalent about integrating into their communities and find it difficult to do so. Being familiar to and recognized by others as a resident in a neighborhood or community are sources of "distal support" that provide individuals with feelings of belonging to their community and are important to recovery from homelessness. We hypothesized that individuals engaged with Housing First (HF) programs would report more distal support than individuals engaged with traditional homeless services (treatment as usual,

Service provision for mentally disordered homeless people.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Mentally ill homeless persons are among the most neglected or marginalized patient groups. Their needs for mental healthcare are widely unmet. The current economic crisis probably accelerates the social decline and deterioration of physical and mental health in high-risk groups worldwide and increases the need for appropriate treatments, services, and prevention strategies. RECENT FINDINGS: Research on service provision for mentally disordered homeless people (from 2010 to 2012) covers the following issues: epidemiology of mental ill health among homeless persons, service d

A fear avoidance model in facial burn body image disturbance.

The quality of life of burn-injured patients can be impaired physically and psychologically. Burn patients who experience facial disfigurement have psychological, social, and economic difficulties living with their appearance in addition to difficulties associated with their medical treatment. The aim of this review was to investigate, within a cognitive behavioural framework, the effect of facial disfigurement on body image and social integration in burn patients. Body image is a complex concept used to express the mental image of a person's physical self. Newell offered a cognitive-behaviour…

From struggle to strength in African and Middle Eastern newcomers' integration stories to Canada: A participatory health equity research study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Newcomers (immigrants, refugees, and international students) face many personal, gender, cultural, environmental and health system barriers when integrating into a new society. These struggles can affect their health and social care, reducing access to mental health care. This study explores the lived experiences of African and Middle Eastern newcomers to Ontario, Canada. An understanding of newcomer integration challenges, successes and social justice issues is needed to improve health equity and social services. METHODS: In this qualitative study, we used a partic

The role of support in influencing outcome of end-stage renal disease.

An important part of health behavior variability is a supportive environment. This paper examines the concept and discusses its application to a general and geriatric home dialysis population. Social environment is analyzed along three interrelated dimensions: social support, social integration, and social network. The authors conclude that a multimethod approach for assessing environmental support is preferred over a single-item index. Furthermore, a supportive interpersonal environment is important for patients and family, both as a preventive agent and as a protective buffer against the imp…

Responding to Suffering:Development Course and Social Dimensions of Palliative Care.

A review of the development course of palliative care reveals that its goal of alleviating suffering determines the indispensability of the social dimension in this field. As palliative care emerges in response to the general trends such as aging and disease spectrum changes of social development,it naturally becomes one of the key solutions to social issues including the difficulties in caregiving and hospitalization for end-of-life patients.Beyond its social value, the comprehensiveness and localization of care emphasized by palliative care also require the support and intervention of theoreti

The Cost of Scrutiny: Subclinical Social Anxiety and Performance Context Reshape Frontal-Midline Theta Network Reconfigurations during Probabilistic Learning.

Social anxiety is reliably characterized by biases toward avoidance and aversive learning. Frontal-midline theta (FM-theta) oscillations have been implicated as a key neural mechanism underlying these learning biases. Here, we combined a dynamic network neuroscience approach with computational modeling to investigate how FM-theta oscillatory activity coordinates large-scale functional network interactions on a trial-to-trial basis during feedback-guided learning. Additionally, we examined how these neural dynamics are associated with social anxiety across different social contexts. A sample of

Evaluating the Effects of a Rent Subsidy and Mentoring Intervention for Youth Transitioning Out of Homelessness: Protocol for a Mixed Methods, Community-Based Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Although the risk factors associated with young people entering and becoming entrenched in street life have been thoroughly investigated, peer-reviewed evidence is scarce to nonexistent for rigorous interventions targeting social integration outcomes for young people who have experienced homelessness. From the limited research that has been done, emerging evidence signals that, although structural supports such as subsidized housing and social service providers are important, these resources alone are insufficient to help young people integrate into the mainstream society. OBJECTI…

Enhanced community reintegration: the impact of participating in wheelchair basketball on reintegration of people living with a spinal cord injury.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a life-altering condition with significant physical, psychological, and social consequences. In South Africa, where trauma-related SCI is prevalent and specialized rehabilitation services are limited, community reintegration remains a major challenge. Participation in adaptive sports, such as wheelchair basketball, may provide opportunities for improved independence, social support, and psychosocial well-being. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the role wheelchair basketball plays to support community reintegration of people with SCI into their co
