BACKGROUND: Women engaged in commercial sex work (WESW) are at a higher risk of acquiring and transmitting HIV. WESW are highly mobile, and their mobility may increase their economic status, and increased access to healthcare and other social services. However, it may also facilitate the spread of HIV infection from higher to lower prevalence regions. This study examined the predictors of mobility among WESW in Uganda using a generalized estimating equations model.
METHODS: We defined and measured mobility as the change in residence by WESW between baseline, 6 months, and 12 months follow-up.

Falls are the most common accidents among the elderly, and while medical risk factors are well known, less is known about the association of falls with social factors. The aims of this study were to estimate the incidence rate of falls in a national, representative sample of Israeli elderly and to examine the association of falls with selected medical and social factors. A special national survey conducted in 1985 by the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics showed that among a representative sample of 3,494 community-dwelling elderly persons aged greater than or equal to 65, 24% reported a fall

This study examined the effects of a social cognitive theory (SCT)-guided, multi-component mobile health (mHealth) intervention on physical activity (PA), body mass index (BMI), and SCT constructs (exercise self-efficacy, social support, outcome expectations, self-regulation) among young adults with overweight or obesity. Sixty participants were recruited via convenience sampling and randomly allocated to one of four groups: (1) social media-only, (2) fitness application (app)-only, (3) combined social media and fitness app, or (4) control; 56 participants (25 males, 31 females; mean age = 21.

OBJECTIVES: While life-space mobility is key for wellbeing, social participation and access to health care, vulnerable older adults face physical and mental barriers that may restrict mobility. The present exploratory study examined associations between physical functional limitations, depressive symptoms, life-space mobility and outpatient health care utilization.
METHODS: Cross-sectional data from 197 community-dwelling older adults with care needs and clinical depression was collected. Life-space assessment composite score (LS-C), instrumental activities of daily living scale (iADL), Geria

In Canada where long-term care is primarily oriented to elderly persons and affordable accessible housing is limited, younger disabled adults may be living in circumstances that do not meet their health needs and contribute to their social exclusion. The purpose of this study was to undertake an ethical analysis of what constitute an 'adequate' home environment for adults with significant mobility disabilities. An integrated design was used that combined qualitative interviews with normative ethical analysis in an iterative process. Twenty interviews with 19 participants were conducted in Onta

The social participation and integration of older adults are important aspects of healthy aging. However, in general, older adults have smaller social networks than their younger counterparts due to changes in their life cycle stage, such as retirement or age-related losses, along with a declining health and increasing mobility limitations. Consequently, with increasing age, an increasing proportion of older people experience feelings of loneliness and social isolation. Previous studies that have analyzed the relationships between loneliness, social networks, and the living environment have of

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective biomedical prevention tool for HIV yet remains underutilized among key populations, particularly among young sexual and gender minorities (SGM). Recognizing the popularity of specific dating and social media apps among SGM young adults, we leveraged user data from these platforms to build a machine learning (ML) model that could inform targeted, data-driven interventions aimed at improving PrEP uptake and adherence. We adapted eWellness, an Android mobile app, to passively collect data from research participants capturing mobile app usage,

In the absence of vaccines, the most widespread reaction to curb the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide was the implementation of lockdowns or stay-at-home policies. Despite the reported usefulness of such policies, their efficiency was highly constrained by socioeconomic factors determining their feasibility and their associated outcome in terms of mobility reduction and the subsequent limitation of social activity. Here we investigate the impact of lockdown policies on the mobility patterns of different socioeconomic classes in the three major cities of Colombia during the first wave of the COVID-1

INTRODUCTION: While planning an immunization campaign in settings where public health interventions are subject to politically motivated resistance, designing context-based social mobilization strategies is critical to ensure community acceptability. In preparation for an Oral Cholera Vaccine campaign implemented in Nampula, Mozambique, in November 2016, we assessed potential barriers and levers for vaccine acceptability.
METHODS: Questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions, as well as observations, were conducted before the campaign. The participants included central and

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the primary cause of death and disability for 18- to 45-year-olds. High-level mobility is important for many of the social, leisure, sporting, and employment roles of young adults. The aim of these case reports was to evaluate a conceptual framework for retraining high-level mobility after TBI. The progression of 2 patients who had sustained a severe TBI but had contrasting clinical presentations was monitored over 6 months. Patient 1 presented with left hemiplegia following a TBI 10 years earlier, whereas patient 2 presented with ataxia 2 months following a TBI

The pervasiveness of mobile devices, which is increasing daily, is generating a vast amount of geo-located data allowing us to gain further insights into human behaviors. In particular, this new technology enables users to communicate through mobile social media applications, such as Twitter, anytime and anywhere. Thus, geo-located tweets offer the possibility to carry out in-depth studies on human mobility. In this paper, we study the use of Twitter in transportation by identifying tweets posted from roads and rails in Europe between September 2012 and November 2013. We compute the percentage

BACKGROUND: Preconception health education is critical to improve pregnancy and neonatal outcomes, but people with mobility disabilities have specific, often unique issues related to preparing for pregnancy. This study sought to develop consensus-based domains for a preconception education curriculum for people with mobility disabilities.
METHODS: We used a mixed-methods approach, including a literature review and a Delphi method to develop consensus. Delphi panel members and domains were identified by a systematic review and purposive sampling and the panel included physicians, researchers,

BACKGROUND: While recent work emphasizes the multi-dimensionality of mobility, no current measure incorporates multiple domains of mobility. Using existing conceptual frameworks we identified four domains of mobility (physical, cognitive, social, transportation) to create a "Mobility Over Varied Environments Scale" (MOVES). We then assessed expected patterns of MOVES in the Canadian population.
METHODS: An expert panel identified survey items within each MOVES domain from the Canadian Community Health Survey- Healthy Aging Cycle (2008-2009) for 28,555 (weighted population n = 12,805,067) adul

BACKGROUND: Frailty is an increasing public health concern in ageing populations and is frequently accompanied by psychological distress, mobility limitations, and reduced quality of life. Anxiety is common among frail older adults and may influence functional mobility and well-being. However, evidence on the relationships between anxiety, life-space mobility, and quality of life among frail older adults in low- and middle-income countries, particularly Nigeria, is limited. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the prevalence of anxiety, life-space mobility, and quality of life, and examined their re

Human geography's varied engagement with the brain has involved considerations of the way people know and respond to their environments, and their place-based experiences with emotions, mental illnesses and disorders, intellectual disabilities and particular neurological conditions. This paper argues however that this scholarship could be augmented by, and existing expertise be directed towards, considering physical brain abnormalities and injuries. As a case in point it considers the spatial experience of living with Type 1 Chiari Malformation. Through interviews with four sufferers, the rese

Geosocial networking phone applications (GSN apps) used to meet sexual partners have become popular in the men who have sex with men (MSM) communities of the USA since 2009. Previous studies have shown greater incidence of gonorrhea and chlamydia and lower testing frequency for HIV testing among GSN app users when compared to non-users. The present study aims to determine the type, number, and frequency of apps used, as well as the association between dispositional self-control and health-related behaviors. Participants (n = 146) were recruited from Amazon's Mechanical Turk program to respond
