Body sway predicts romantic interest in speed dating.

Social bonding is fundamental to human society, and romantic interest involves an important type of bonding. Speed dating research paradigms offer both high external validity and experimental control for studying romantic interest in real-world settings. While previous studies focused on the effect of social and personality factors on romantic interest, the role of non-verbal interaction has been little studied in initial romantic interest, despite being commonly viewed as a crucial factor. The present study investigated whether romantic interest can be predicted by non-verbal dyadic interacti

It's raining bots: how easier access to internet surveys has created the perfect storm.

Online surveys are an increasingly common way to collect data from the public, with social media and financial incentives (e.g. gift cards) commonly used to increase participation rates. Anonymity, ease of response, and the potential to reach diverse demographics have also contributed to the popularity of online surveys. Health services research benefits from the increased accessibility that online survey-based data collection provides; however, fraudulent responses are of concern. The following article describes our team's experience with a national survey of Canadian healthcare providers bei

Deciphering Influence on Social Media: A Comparative Analysis of Influential Account Detection Metrics in the Context of Tobacco Promotion.

Influencer marketing spending in the United States was expected to surpass $6 billion in 2023. This marketing tactic poses a public health threat, as research suggests it has been utilized to undercut decades of public health progress-such as gains made against tobacco use among adolescents. Public health and public opinion researchers need practical tools to capture influential accounts on social media. Utilizing X (formerly Twitter) little cigar and cigarillo (LCC) data, we compared seven influential account detection metrics to help clarify our understanding of the functions of existing met

Who Are the Turkers? A Characterization of MTurk Workers Using the Personality Assessment Inventory.

As online data collection services such as Amazon's Mechanical Turk (MTurk) gain popularity, the quality and representativeness of such data sources have gained research attention. To date, the majority of existing studies have compared MTurk workers with undergraduate samples, localized community samples, or other Internet-based samples, and thus, there remains little known about the personality and mental health constructs of MTurk workers relative to a national representative sample. The present study addresses these limitations and broadens the scope of existing research through the use of

Assessing Collectivism in Latino, Asian/Pacific Islander, and African American Men Who Have Sex With Men: A Psychometric Evaluation.

The study of collectivism has implications for HIV prevention research, especially in studies that use a social networking or community mobilization approach. However, research on collectivism in race/ethnicity and sexual minority groups is limited. We psychometrically evaluated a brief version of the Individualism-Collectivism Interpersonal Assessment Inventory (ICIAI) in a chain-referral sample of 400 Latino, 393 Asian/Pacific Islander, and 403 African American men who have sex with men (MSM). Data were collected via a one-time survey on demographics, the ICIAI, acculturation, and ethnicity

Causes and intervention strategies for appearance anxiety: a critical review of recent advances.

BACKGROUND: Appearance anxiety has increasingly been recognized as an important public mental health concern, characterized by persistent concerns regarding physical appearance and heightened sensitivity to social scrutiny. Visually oriented cultural norms, together with algorithm-driven social media environments, have been associated with appearance-related distress, particularly among adolescents and young adults, which may adversely affect psychosocial functioning. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop a comprehensive biopsychosocial etiological model of appearance anxiety through a critic

Increasing Equity Within Randomized Control Trials: A Qualitative Analysis of Focus Groups From a Multi-Site, Pragmatic Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Underrepresentation of diverse populations in clinical trials poses challenges to equity and external validity in health care research. To successfully recruit underrepresented participants in pragmatic clinical trials, researchers must understand the perspectives and needs of individuals from diverse backgrounds who participate in research. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this qualitative study was to gain an understanding of the needs and perspectives of participants of the OPTIMUM trial -- a pragmatic trial evaluating mindfulness-based stress reduction for chronic low back pain. Validity and reliability of a structured interview for early detection and risk assessment of parenting and developmental problems in young children: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Preventive child health care is well suited for the early detection of parenting and developmental problems. However, as far as the younger age group is concerned, there are no validated early detection instruments which cover both the child and its environment. Therefore, we have developed a broad-scope structured interview which assesses parents' concerns and their need for support, using both the parental perspective and the experience of the child health care nurse: the Structured Problem Analysis of Raising Kids (SPARK). This study reports the psychometric characteristics of t

Assessing the validity of social anxiety disorder subtypes using a nationally representative sample.

The purpose of this study was to examine and validate social anxiety disorder subtypes using the nationally representative National Comorbidity Survey Replication (N=9282). Generalized and non-generalized subtypes were defined as fearing at least 8 (i.e., most) and fewer than 7 of 14 possible social situations, respectively, following the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR). Results indicated that in those with social anxiety disorder, the odds of having comorbid major depression, a comorbid anxiety disorder, and suicidal ideation were significantly greater in the

Male prostitution: pathology, paradigms and progress in research.

The body of research on male sex workers (MSWs) in the social science literature has evolved concurrently with the research that de-pathologized homosexuality. Unfortunately, the majority of studies focusing on MSWs have been dominated by paradigms that dehumanize the researched. Psychopathology, social deviance and, with the advent of HIV, MSWs as "vectors of disease," framed research questions. Further, many researchers have focused on typologies of MSWs, reporting respective associated characteristics. However, the knowledge gained by past research was often a product of the places MSWs wer

Smartphone Addiction Among Zimbabwean Undergraduate Students: A Prevalence and Cross-Cultural Validation of the Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version (SAS-SV).

INTRODUCTION: Smartphones are an invaluable daily tool, with 57% of the global population (4.6 billion people) having mobile access to the internet. However, excessive/problematic use of smartphones is highly prevalent globally. The use of smartphones, particularly among university students, offers many unique opportunities for learning, entrepreneurship, and social interaction. Despite these benefits, "excessive" or "compulsive" use of smartphones has emerged as a growing concern. METHODS: This cross-sectional study evaluated the validity and reliability of the Smartphone Addiction Scale-Sho

Construct validity of DSM-5 cannabis use disorder diagnosis and severity levels in adults with problematic substance use.

The DSM-5 definition of cannabis use disorder (CUD) differs from DSM-IV by combining abuse and dependence criteria (without the legal criterion) and including withdrawal and craving criteria. Information on construct validity of the DSM-5 CUD diagnosis and severity levels is lacking. This study examines the associations between DSM-5 CUD and severity classification and a set of concurrent validators. Adults with problematic substance use were recruited from two settings: a research setting in an urban medical center and a suburban inpatient addiction treatment program. Participants who reporte

Perceived social support, perceived stress, and quality of sleep among COVID-19 patients in Iran: assessing measurement invariance of the multidimensional scale of perceived social support across gender and age.

BACKGROUND: Perceived social support (PSS) plays a considerable role in mental health. The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) is one of the most widely used scales, leading to much research evidence. The present study investigated its measurement model, equivalence across gender (male and female) and age groups (older patients= above 60 and non-older patients= below 60), and concurrent validity. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between March and October 2020, on patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 in Tehran, Iran. The scales were administered to 328 CO

Genetic and clinical features of social cognition in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2 DS) is widely known as one of the most compelling genetic models of schizophrenia so far, being almost 40% of the carriers affected by psychotic symptoms. Moreover, most of these subjects also show impairment in social cognition, which is a comprehensive array of function that guides social interaction with the others, leading as well to the acquisition of new cognitive and social skills. In the last decade researchers have argued whether social cognition dysfunctions could be underlined by specific genetic alterations, and whether these are linked to specifi

Validation of a quality-of-life measure for older people using urgent and emergency care.

BACKGROUND: Older people (aged 65 years and over) frequently present to urgent or emergency care settings, often with multiple health and social care needs. Despite this, their quality-of-life (QOL) is rarely assessed in a systematic or meaningful way. Capturing QOL in these settings is essential for delivering person-centred care for guiding improvements in service planning and delivery. This study aimed to evaluate the construct validity of the Quality-of-life - Aged Care Consumers, (QOL-ACC), an older people specific QOL instrument, in the context of urgent or emergency care. METHODS: Data

Development and validation of quality of life instruments for chronic diseases-Chronic gastritis version 2 (QLICD-CG V2.0).

Quality of life is an important outcome indicator to evaluate whether treatment is successful or not. Chronic gastritis leads to ongoing deterioration of subjectively perceived quality of life. There are several generic measures, but they are not developed particularly to assess chronic gastritis problems. The Quality of Life Instruments for Chronic Diseases-Chronic Gastritis (QLICD-CG V2.0) questionnaire is a 39-item, multi-dimensional, self-report instrument to assess chronic gastritis patients' perception of their health related quality of life in four domains. The instrument was developed

The Intersectional Discrimination Index - Revised: Refinement and further psychometric assessment.

The Intersectional Discrimination Index (InDI) includes three measures of anticipated, day-to-day, and major discrimination for intercategorical intersectionality research. Previous studies found that the measures are unidimensional with high loadings, good test-retest reliability, predictive validity, and measurement invariance between Canadian and United States (US) samples. Gaps included the need for cognitive interviewing, reassessing stability of the measures' configural and metric structures in a diverse US sample and identifying ways to protect participant well-being. From 2021 through
