Sodium homeostasis in chronic decerebrate rats.

Physiological and behavioral concomitants of sodium need were studied in supracollicularly transected and pair-fed intact rats. Chronic decerebrate rats, like intact rats, reduced their urine sodium output when placed on a sodium-deficient diet. Similarly, 24 hr after sodium loading, decerebrate and intact rats excreted comparable levels of the excess sodium. In the 2 hr immediately following the loading, decerebrate rats excreted less sodium. In contrast, behavioral aspects of sodium homeostasis were completely absent in chronic decerebrate rats. In separate experiments, intraoral intake, and…

Hepatorenal syndrome without avid sodium retention.

A urinary sodium concentration [U(Na)] of less than 10 mmoles per liter is considered important in differentiating hepatorenal syndrome from other causes of progressive renal impairment in patients with liver disease. However, occasionally, patients with hepatorenal syndrome have been recognized in whom the U(Na) is consistently greater than 10 mmoles per liter. Eight such patients, in all of whom there was no clinical or laboratory evidence to implicate other causes of progressive renal impairment, were identified. The clinical features, hepatic and renal status and hospital course were compa…

[Sodium channels in electrically excitable membranes].

Properties of sodium channels in electrically excitable membranes can be obtained from sodium currents, gating currents, sodium-current fluctuations and currents through single channels. Gating processes in sodium channels are related to intramembranous charge displacements and are modified by toxins, local anaesthetics and chemical agents. From the results a schematic diagram of a sodium channel can be derived.

Sodium homeostasis after small-bowel resection.

In 16 small-bowel-resected patients, 8 with ileostomy and 8 with at least half of the colon in function, plasma volume, plasma aldosterone concentration, plasma renin activity, and the 4-day excretion of sodium and potassium in urine and stools were determined. Patients with ileostomy had a high faecal loss of sodium: 85-181 (median, 149) mmol/24 h, and were all more or less sodium-depleted with decreased plasma volume of 1.4-2.5 (median, 2.0) l/175 cm (normal range, 2.3-3.8l/175 cm), increased plasma aldosterone of 742-2250 (median, 1131) pg/ml (normal range, 33-220 pg/ml), and extremely low …

[Thermo-sodium phototherapy of psoriasis vulgaris].

Report on the treatment of psoriasis in saturated sodium chloride water from a natural source followed by irradiation with ultraviolet UV-A- and UV-B-lights, similar to the treatment at the Dead Sea. Approximately 5335 patients were treated in this manner since 1977. Over 80% of all cases were cleared within 4-6 weeks, whereas 72% of cases with psoriasis-arthritis were improved. This treatment does not influence the rate of relapses. The possible effects on the skin of 27% saturated sodium chloride water is described in detail.

Renal aspects of neonatal sodium homeostasis.

Current knowledge on renal sodium handling during the neonatal period is reviewed with particular reference to its clinical implications. It has been demonstrated that fractional sodium excretion is inversely proportional to the maturity of the neonate. The high rate of urinary sodium excretion in the low-birth-weight premature infants results in sodium depletion, hyponatraemia and hypoosmolality; evidence has been provided to indicate that it may contribute to the development of late metabolic acidosis, failure to gain weight and impaired function of the central nervous system. When challenge…

Renal tubular effects of sodium fluoride.

Administration of sodium fluoride results in vasopressin-resistant polyuric "renal failure" resembling nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. However, the renal tubular site of action of fluoride is not clear. Fischer 344 rats received acute i.v. infusions of sodium fluoride (0.3, 1.47 and 2.20 mumol/min/kg b.wt.) for 2.5 hr which resulted in dissipation of the renal medullary tissue osmotic gradient and a sustained, dose-related increase in fractional sodium excretion and urine flow. In additional experiments, free water reabsorption and excretion were decreased by fluoride, but the decrease in free…

Albumin-binding interactions of sodium valproate.

In vitro equilibrium dialysis experiments show that salicylate and phenylbutazone displace valproate from its binding sites on human serum albumin at therapeutic concentrations, whereas warfarin and carbamazepin do not.

Anaphylaxis due to thiopental sodium anesthesia.

Anaphylaxis due to an anesthetic is one type of cardiovascular emergency that can occur during general anesthesia. Anaphylactic reactions to muscle relaxants have been documented. Barbiturates, used as sedatives, are well known to produce cutaneous reactions, but anaphylaxis after their ingestion seems to be rare. Generalized allergic reactions to thiopental sodium during anesthesia are mentioned in the product monograph for Penthothal sodium, and rare case reports of anaphylactic reactions to infused thiopental have appeared, generally in the anesthesiology literature. Documentation of the im…

Suspected sodium nitroprusside-induced cyanide intoxication.

Sodium nitroprusside-induced cyanide intoxication has been demonstrated in the laboratory animal and has been experienced clinically during induced hypotensive anesthesia. This is a care report of a successful resuscitation of a severe cardiovascular collapse secondary to suspected sodium nitroprusside-induced cyanide intoxication.

Sodium loading of inner ear fluids.

A slow intracarotid infusion of hypertonic sodium chloride solution, 350 mEq/L, and potassium chloride, 5 mEq/L, was used to increase serum sodium chloride over a 90-minute period in 85 cats. A slow, steady rise in serum sodium occurred, which reached almost 208 mEq/L at the end of 90 minutes. A concomitant rise in sodium occurred in the cerebrospinal fluid and perilymph. In contrast, the sodium showed only a transient slight increase in the cochlear and vestibular endolymph. Endolymph potassium appeared to rise in order to balance out the increase in sodium concentration of the surrounding an…
