Crystal structure of 1,6-di-thia-cyclo-deca-cis-3,cis-8-diene (DTCDD).

The title compound, C8H12S2 (trivial name DTCDD), was obtained as a side product of the reaction between cis-1,4-di-chloro-but-2-ene and sodium sulfide. The asymmetric unit consists of one-quarter of the mol-ecule (S site symmetry 2) and the complete mol-ecule has 2/m (C 2h ) point symmetry with the C=C bond in an E conformation. The geometry of the title compound is compared to those of a chloro derivative and a mercury complex.

Evaluation of sodium valproate loaded nanoparticles in acute and chronic pentylenetetrazole induced seizure models.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Efficacy of sodium valproate in epilepsy is limited by its poor blood brain barrier penetration and side effects. Nanoparticles may offer a better drug delivery system to overcome these limitations. This study evaluated the efficacy of sodium valproate encapsulated in nanoparticles in pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) induced acute and kindling models of seizures in male Wistar rats. METHODS: Poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) based, polysorbate 80 stabilized sodium valproate loaded nanoparticles (nano sodium valproate) and rhodamine loaded nanoparticles (RLN) were formulated

Complexes of Alkaline and Ammonium Cations with Dopamine and Eumelanin Precursors: Dissecting the Role of Noncovalent Cation-π and Cation-Lone Pair (σ-Type) Interactions.

Cation-π interactions and their possible competition with other noncovalent interactions (NCI) might play a key role in both dopamine- and eumelanin-based bioinspired materials. In this contribution, to unravel the delicate interplay between cation-π interactions and other possible competing forces, the configurational space of noncovalent complexes formed by dopamine or eumelanin precursors (o-benzoquinone, DHI and a semiquinone dimer) and three different cations (Na+, K+, and NH4+) is sampled by means of accurate ab initio calculations. To this end, we resort to the mp2mod method, recently v

Molecular Evidence of the Inhibitory Potential of Melatonin against NaAsO2-Induced Aging in Male Rats.

Arsenic (As) poisoning is widespread due to exposure to pollution. The toxic level of (As) causes oxidative stress-induced aging and tissue damage. Since melatonin (MLT) has anti-oxidant and anti-aging properties, we aimed to evaluate the protective effect of MLT against the toxicity of sodium arsenite (NaAsO2). Healthy male NMRI mice were divided into eight different groups. The control group received a standard regular diet. Other groups were treated with varying diets, including MLT alone, NaAsO2, and NaAsO2 plus MLT. After one month of treatment, biochemical and pathological tests were per

An Efficient Approach to Aromatic Aminomethylation Using Dichloromethane as Methylene Source.

Ultrasound-promoted N-aminomethylation of indoles can be achieved in basic medium using sodium hydride and dichloromethane (DCM) as C1 donor source. This innovative amino methylation protocol results in good to excellent yields of multifunctional indole derivatives. The procedure is also applicable to other aza-heterocyclic compounds and, interestingly, affords direct access to aminomethyl-substituted aryl alcohols.

Investigating the mechanisms of action of thyroid disruptors: A multimodal approach that integrates in vitro and metabolomic analysis.

The thyroid gland, a vital component of the endocrine system, plays a pivotal role in regulating metabolic processes, growth, and development. To better characterize thyroid system disrupting chemicals (TSDC), we followed the next-generation risk assessment approach, which further considers the mechanistic profile of xenobiotics. We combined targeted in vitro testing with untargeted metabolomics. Four known TSDC, propyl-thiouracil (PTU), sodium perchlorate, triclosan, and 5-pregnen-3β-ol-20-one-16α‑carbonitrile (PCN) were investigated using rat in vitro models, including primary hepatocytes, P

Carbon-Coated Na3.32 Fe2.34 (P2 O7 )2 Cathode Material for High-Rate and Long-Life Sodium-Ion Batteries.

Rechargeable sodium-ion batteries are proposed as the most appropriate alternative to lithium batteries due to the fast consumption of the limited lithium resources. Due to their improved safety, polyanion framework compounds have recently gained attention as potential candidates. With the earth-abundant element Fe being the redox center, the uniform carbon-coated Na3.32 Fe2.34 (P2 O7 )2 /C composite represents a promising alternative for sodium-ion batteries. The electrochemical results show that the as-prepared Na3.32 Fe2.34 (P2 O7 )2 /C composite can deliver capacity of ≈100 mA h g-1 at 0.1

Allergic contact dermatitis to underwear elastic. Chemically transformed by laundry bleach.

Six subjects, allergic to the elastic in their undergarments, were patch test-negative to the rubber components and new elastic from the suppliers. However, washing the rubber with sodium hypochlorite gave the subjects allergic responses due to the effect of bleach on the rubber accelerator, zinc dibenzyldithiocarbamate (ZDC). To identify the allergen, ZDC was reacted with the sodium hypochlorite, and the resultant gum was extracted with diethyl ether. Eight compounds were identified in the reaction mixture by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The individual components were tested on volun

Hypernatremia following gastrointestinal bleeding in cirrhosis with ascites.

3 patients with hepatic cirrhosis and ascites underwent increased diuresis on six occasions, closely related to episodes of gastrointestinal bleeding. In each instance the increased urine volume was preceded by a sharp increase in blood urea nitrogen, presumably due to absorption of nitrogenous compounds from the gastrointestinal tract, suggesting a mechanism of osmotic diuresis. In each case there was a signigicant increase in serum sodium and osmolality, related to the greater-water-than-sodium diuresis induced by urea, which was promptly reversed by the administration of water or isotonic s

Molecular arms race classifier for decrypting venom peptide and ion channel interactions.

Animal venoms comprise an astonishing number of peptides, proteins and small molecules. The diversity of venom compounds arises from evolutionary adaptations resulting in both offensive and defensive traits in predators and prey alike. This concept, referred to as "arms race", underpins the specificity and selectivity of venom compounds for certain molecular targets, like ion channels. Ion channels are essential regulators of cellular processes, and their dysfunction or dysregulation facilitates a wide range of diseases. Venom peptides and their derivatives are powerful modulators of ion chann

A spectroscopic investigation into the reaction of sodium tetrathionate with cysteine.

A spectroscopic investigation into the reaction of sodium tetrathionate with cysteine at pH 5 both at the boil and at room temperature has been carried out. The Raman and infrared spectra of the model compounds cysteine, cysteine-S-sulfonate, cysteine-S-thiosulfonate, sodium thiosulfate and sodium sulfite were also obtained and vibrations involving the sulfur atoms were analyzed in detail. These results were utilized in the interpretation of the spectra obtained from tetrathionate-cysteine reaction mixtures. The reaction supernatants were analyzed by high performance thin layer chromatography

Arsenic and chromium enhance transformation of bovine papillomavirus DNA-transfected C3H/10T1/2 cells.

Tumor promoters such as phorbol esters, teleocidin and okadaic acid increase the numbers of multilayered, transformed foci produced by BPV DNA-transfected C3H/10T1/2 cells. We questioned whether arsenic and chromium, which are known human carcinogens also enhance transformation of BPV DNA-transfected C3H/10T1/2 cells. Cr(III) potassium sulfate at 100 microM enhanced transformation by 1.4-fold, but Cr(VI) as potassium chromate did not enhance transformation, although toxicity of potassium chromate may have prevented enhancement of transformation. Sodium arsenite (As(III) at 5 microM and sodium

Possible side effects of airborne pesticides on fungi and vascular plants in The Netherlands.

A survey of the potential side effects of volatilized pesticides on fungi and vascular plants in The Netherlands has been made for two herbicides (atrazine and MCPA), a fungicide (captan) and a soil fumigant (metham sodium). By applying existing models, a prediction is presented of post-treatment dispersal and deposition due to volatilization, both at short and long ranges, and of the potential side effects on fungi and vascular plants. The general conclusion is that side effects (stunting and growth anomalies) are to be expected outside the target area, especially close (< 500 m) to treated p

Assessment of mutagenic effects: Combined impact of nitrogen-fixing compounds and phenol on plant and animal organisms.

INTRODUCTION: Rapid industrialisation, urbanisation, and increased use of agricultural chemicals have significantly contributed to environmental pollution, particularly affecting air, water, and soil quality. These pollutants, including nitrogen-containing compounds and phenol, pose mutagenic risks, potentially leading to genetic alterations and health issues in exposed populations. This study aims to evaluate the mutagenic potential of sodium nitrate, sodium nitrite, phenol, and their combinations on plant and animal cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study utilised two experimental models: T

Phase Behavior and Crystallization Kinetics of a Poorly Water-Soluble Weakly Basic Drug as a Function of Supersaturation and Media Composition.

Understanding the supersaturation and precipitation behavior of poorly water-soluble compounds in vivo and the impact on oral absorption is critical to design consistently performing products with optimized bioavailability. Weakly basic compounds are of particular importance in this context since they have an inherent tendency to undergo supersaturation in vivo upon exit from the stomach and entry into the small intestine because of their pH-dependent solubility. To understand and probe potential in vivo variability of supersaturating systems, rigorous understanding of compound physical proper

Mechanism of inhibition of human neutrophil collagenase by Gold(I) chrysotherapeutic compounds. Interaction at a heavy metal binding site.

The mechanism of inhibition of two forms of human neutrophil collagenase (HNC) by six Au(I) compounds, some of which are used as chrysotherapeutic agents, has been investigated. The two forms of enzyme studied are active and latent HNC, the latter of which is activated by p-chloromercuribenzoate (PCMB). The effects of PCMB and Zn(II), which are normally included in the assays, on the activity of both forms of HNC and on their inhibition by these Au(I) compounds have also been studied. Zn(II) stimulates the activity of both the active and PCMB-activated latent forms of HNC up to a concentration
