Antibiotic resistance has largely been studied in the context of failure of the drugs in clinical settings. There is now growing evidence that bacteria that live in the environment (e.g. the soil) are multi-drug-resistant. Recent functional screens and the growing accumulation of metagenomic databases are revealing an unexpected density of resistance genes in the environment: the antibiotic resistome. This challenges our current understanding of antibiotic resistance and provides both barriers and opportunities for antimicrobial drug discovery.

This study investigated the effect of chemical heterogeneity of humic acids (HAs) on the equilibrium sorption of phenanthrene by HA extracts. Six HA samples were extracted from three different soils with 0.5 M NaOH and 0.1 M Na4P2O7 and were characterized with elemental analysis, infrared spectrometry, and solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometry. This paper provides a review of surveys on soil-transmitted helminths that were done in Vietnam between 1990 and 2001. Prevalence estimates could be obtained for 29 of the 61 provinces. Extrapolating from this, it is estimated that 33.9 million people in Vietnam are infected with Ascaris (prevalence 44.4%), 17.6 million with Trichuris (prevalence 23.1%), and 21.8 million with hookworm (prevalence 28.6%). Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts from dairy calves are believed to regularly contaminate watersheds. Identifying oocysts and measuring their viability in the natural environment are important elements in estimating the risk posed by this resistant organism. Biodegradation of soil humic acids by Streptomyces viridosporus ATCC 39115 growing in a mineral salts--glucose medium was demonstrated. Four hundred and fifty subjects were included in a study of the prevalence of soil-transmitted nematodes in Ujung Pandang, South-Sulawesi, Indonesia. Trichuriasis was the most prevalent infection (93.3%), followed by ascariasis (80.2%) and hookworm infection (19.5%). Among 156 subjects who were given 500 mg of mebendazole in a single dose, treatment resulted in cure rates of 93.4%, 77.6%, and 91.1%, and average egg-count reduction rates of 99.0%, 92.8%, and 98.3%, for ascariasis, trichuriasis, and hookworm infections, respectively. We report human infections with Necator gorillae and Strongyloides fuelleborni, zoonotic helminths from nonhuman primates, in Gabon. We also detected a cryptic Ancylostoma species helminth. Infections occurred in settings of localized deforestation and environmental degradation, which increase human-animal contact. Surveillance to clarify the extent of human infections is needed.

Melioidosis, caused by the highly lethal pathogen Burkholderia pseudomallei, is emerging in North and South America. We studied soil samples in Suriname to determine endemicity of Burkholderia species. B. thailandensis was isolated, but B. pseudomallei was not. A multidisciplinary approach could establish clinical and ecologic distribution of both Burholderia species in Suriname.
