Retrospective Study over 15-years Period on Zygomathic arch Fractures: A Single Center Experience.

The steadily increasing global population and food demand have intensified the use of chemical fertilizers in agriculture, leading to environmental concerns. This study explored endophytic bacterial diversity associated with wild Solanum species as potential eco-friendly alternatives for promoting rice growth. Endophytic bacteria were isolated from the roots of Solanum nigrum, S. sisymbriifolium, and S. virginianum and aseptically cultured. Nine bacterial strains (S1-S9) were selected based on distinct colony morphology and screened for in vitro plant growth-promoting activities, including nit…

Mayer's hemalum-methyl salicylate: a stain-clearing technique for observations within whole ovules.

Nondissected ovaries of tuber-bearing Solanum sp. were stained with Mayer's hemalum, a positive stain for chromatin and nucleoli, and then optically cleared with methyl salicylate, a clearing agent. Clarity, resolution and contrast within the ovules dissected from ovaries were comparable to those of sectioned, paraffin embedded ovaries. Contrast within ovules greatly exceeded that of unstained and nonspecifically stained clearings, and eliminated the need of special optics, i.e., Nomarski interference-contrast optics, for optimal viewing and photography. Much less time and labor were required …

Iron Availability for Micro-Tom Tomatoes via Nanoparticles: Implications for the Antioxidant System and Carbon Metabolism.

Solanum lycopersicum converts Fe3+ into Fe2+, the form absorbed by plants. The Fe2+ present in the growth medium can be absorbed in excess by the plants, causing phytotoxicity. Magnetite has an isocratic balance of Fe3+/Fe2+, which enables the release of Fe2+ in the culture medium. The literature reports that high availability of Fe2+ can cause oxidative damage and a reduction in dry mass, whereas the application of maghemite nanoparticles, which release only Fe3+, can promote an increase in biomass. Thus, we investigated the influence of iron oxides (magnetite and maghemite) on photosynthesis…

KCN inhibition of lipoxygenase in purple, green, and white eggplants.

Lipoxygenase activity in three cultivars (purple, green, and white) of eggplant, Solanum melongena, were compared. Activity was greatest in the purple and lowest in the white variety. In contrast to reports that NaCN did not inhibit eggplant lipoxygenase, in these studies cyanide completely inhibited the enzyme in all three varieties.

Synchronized Chromatin Reorganization as a Key Biomarker in Anesthetic Effects on Plants.

Anesthesia produces a reversible loss of responsiveness in animals by suppressing neuronal excitability and large-scale network integration, yet its effects on non-neuronal systems remain poorly defined. Plants lack neurons but possess excitable membranes, electrical signaling, and stress-responsive chromatin, making them an ideal model to study anesthetic action independent of neural circuitry. Using confocal and super-resolution microscopic imaging in Solanum lycopersicum and Solanum melongena roots and stems, we show that anesthesia disrupts multiple organelles like mitochondria, vesicle tr…

Seed biopriming with a novel endophytic Bacillus licheniformis strain RGS enhances drought tolerance and recovery in tomato.

Drought stress remains one of the most damaging abiotic factors affecting tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) cultivation, particularly in regions where water availability is unpredictable. The present study aims to investigate the potential of seed treatment with Bacillus licheniformis strain RGS to enhance drought tolerance in Solanum lycopersicum cv. Suvarna S22 under greenhouse conditions. Plant performance was assessed across three sequential phases comprising hydration, water deficit and recovery. Relative to uninoculated controls, primed plants showed improved vegetative growth, greater ch…

Hydrogen sulfide implications on easing NaCl induced toxicity in eggplant and tomato seedlings.

In the present study, the role of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in alleviating NaCl (20 mM) induced toxicity on growth, photosynthetic pigments and photochemistry of PS II, and impact on oxidative stress and antioxidant systems of eggplant and tomato was studied. To confirm the role of H2S (donor sodium hydrogen sulphide (NaHS; 40 μM)) under stress, H2S scavenger; hypotaurine (HT; 200 μM) and inhibitor, propargylglycine (PAG; 100 μM) in combination with NaHS was added to the growth medium of NaCl stressed seedlings. The NaCl reduced the overall growth of the seedlings as the Na+ uptake was increased

Associations of the Potato Psyllid and "Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum" in Idaho with the Noncrop Host Plants Bittersweet Nightshade and Field Bindweed.

Zebra chip disease (ZC) in potato (Solanum tuberosum L. [Polemoniales: Solanaceae]) can produce unmarketable tubers with striped necrotic patterns. ZC is associated with the bacterium "Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum" (Lso), which is transmitted by the potato psyllid, Bactericera cockerelli (Šulc) (Hemiptera: Triozidae). Potato psyllids are associated with numerous noncrop host plants, especially from the Solanaceae and Convolvulaceae; however, the contribution and importance of these hosts to ZC epidemiology in potato is poorly understood. To clarify seasonal phenologies on two such host…

The ORGAN SIZE (ORG) locus modulates both vegetative and reproductive gigantism in domesticated tomato.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gigantism is a key component of the domestication syndrome, a suite of traits that differentiates crops from their wild relatives. Allometric gigantism is strongly marked in horticultural crops, causing disproportionate increases in the size of edible parts such as stems, leaves or fruits. Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) has attracted attention as a model for fruit gigantism, and many genes have been described controlling this trait. However, the genetic basis of a corresponding increase in size of vegetative organs contributing to isometric gigantism has remained relatively…

Genome-wide characterization of the tomato SlMGR gene family and the biological function of SlMGR10 in bacteria and Arabidopsis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Magnesium is an essential mineral nutrient with numerous physiological roles in plant growth and development. However, the mechanisms of Mg2+ transport in Solanum lycopersicum remain largely unknown. METHODS: In this study, we performed the characterization of the Magnesium Release family genes (SlMGRs) in tomato. The conserved evolutionary relationship and expression pattern of SlMGR genes, and the subcellular localization and Mg2+ transport activity of SlMGR proteins, were investigated. KEY RESULTS: A total of ten SlMGR proteins were identified. They were divided into …

Unusual plant-extract based media for the differentiation between species in the Candida albicans complex: A comparative study.

Candida albicans is the most common agent in human fungal infections; nevertheless, in the last decades, the closely related yeasts Candida dubliniensis and Candida africana have emerged as pathogens. The purpose of this study was to compare tobacco agar with another five agars prepared from plant extracts (Origanum vulgare, Rosmarinus officinalis, Solanum rudepannum, Solanum oblongifolium and Brugmansia arborea) on the differentiation of C. albicans complex. The hyphae and chlamyconidia formation and the color and margin of the colonies of 200 clinical isolates of C. albicans, C. dubliniensis…

Remodeling of the tuberization-controlling FLOWERING LOCUS T genes from non-tuberizing ancestor to potato.

Potato (Solanum section Petota) originated from a natural hybridization between tomato and Etuberosum ancestors, through which the trait of tuber formation evolved. Genetically, tuberization in potato is controlled by FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) homologs. However, from non-tuberous ancestors to potato, what remodeling of these tuber formation determinants emerged remains unclear. Using homology-based discovery, expression profiling, CRISPR knockouts, and genetic complementation, we here show that tuberization-controlling FT-like genes underwent Petota-specific expansion, restructuring, and divergen…

Congenital deformities produced in hamsters by potato sprouts.

Dried gound potato sprout preparations from seven varieties produced congenital deformities in one strain of hamsters. Incidence of affected litters varied from 8 to 25%, depending on potato variety. Certain steroidal solanum and veratrum alkaloids produced similar defects. Neither peel nor tuber material was teratogenic from one of the potato varieties with highly teratogenic sprouts.

Comparative biochemical and transcriptome analyses in tomato and eggplant reveal their differential responses to Tuta absoluta infestation.

Tomato is more prone to Tuta absoluta invasion and damages as compared to other host plants but the mechanism behind this preference has not been elucidated. Here, two contrasting host preference plants, tomato and eggplant, were used to investigate biochemical and transcriptomic modifications induced by T. absoluta infestation. Biochemical analysis at 0-72 h post T. absoluta infestation revealed significantly reduced concentrations of amino acid, fructose, sucrose, jasmonic acid, salicylic acid, and total phenols in tomato compared to eggplant, mainly at 48 h post T. absoluta infestation. Glutathione and hydrogen sulfide are required for sulfur-mediated mitigation of Cr(VI) toxicity in tomato, pea and brinjal seedlings.

In plants, investigation on heavy metal toxicity and its mitigation by nutrient elements have gained much attention. However, mechanism(s) associated with nutrients-mediated mitigation of metal toxicity remain elusive. In this study, we have investigated the role and interrelation of glutathione (GSH) and hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) in the regulation of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] toxicity in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), pea (Pisum sativum) and brinjal (Solanum melongena) seedlings, supplemented with additional sulfur (S). The results show that Cr(VI) significantly reduced growth, total chlorop…
