The Outer Space Treaty (OST) was opened to signatures in 1967 and, since then, 117 countries, including China, the USA and Russia, have become part of it1. Among other stipulations, the treaty bans the placement of nuclear weapons in outer space. Recently, the US government has raised worries that Russia is testing nuclear-armed anti-satellite weapon (ASAT) components, with the possibility that it will place a nuclear weapon in space. Such a device, if detonated, would destroy most of the satellites in the low Earth orbit. This danger is compounded by the lack of a verification mechanism for t

In this research, SAPO-34 were added into 6Mn4Zr/H-ZSM-5 catalyst and the tri-components catalyst was then granule mixed with ZnCrO X , which is regarded as methanol synthesis component. The introduction of SAPO-34 could facilitate the accumulation of HCPs and promote conversion of CO. As methanol & DME were preferentially consumed over HCPs in SAPO-34, the selectivity of light aromatics benzene, toluene and xylene (BTX) increased by inhibiting further methylation. The addition of Zn X Cr could further remarkably enhance the conversion of CO because of it high activity in methanol & DME synthe

Brain tissue and tumor extraction plays a pivotal role in medical care and clinical research. Leveraging the diverse and complementary information provided by different imaging modalities is crucial to the success of these applications. However, existing deep learning-based methods exhibit limitations in two major aspects. First, they ignore the incorporation of task-oriented regularization when fusing multi-modal features, leading to suboptimal latent space learning. Second, these methods tend to overlook the explicit modeling and exploitation of prediction uncertainty, despite the strong cor

The present white paper concerns the indications and recommendations of the SciSpacE Science Community to make progress in filling the gaps of knowledge that prevent us from answering the question: "How Do Gravity Alterations Affect Animal and Human Systems at a Cellular/Tissue Level?" This is one of the five major scientific issues of the ESA roadmap "Biology in Space and Analogue Environments". Despite the many studies conducted so far on spaceflight adaptation mechanisms and related pathophysiological alterations observed in astronauts, we are not yet able to elaborate a synthetic integrate

The Jacquez k nearest neighbor test, originally developed to improve upon shortcomings of existing tests for space-time interaction, has been shown to be a robust and powerful method of detecting interaction. Despite its flexibility and power, however, the test has three main shortcomings: (i) it discards important information regarding the spatial and temporal scales at which the detected interaction takes place; (ii) the results of the test have not been visualized; and (iii) recent research demonstrates the test to be susceptible to population shift bias. This study presents enhancements to

The aim was to give a systematic review of alternative orthodontic space closure and implant placement in young adults with missing teeth. A literary search was made in the MEDLINE (Pub Med) database from 1990 to 2007. Totally 146 articles were found. Only studies in the English language or other languages with an English abstract were accepted, which reduced the number to 91 articles. Among them, only one prospective and three retrospective articles, two review papers and five case reports with discussion were found. The others presented one or two cases, or focused on treatment planning of m

Spinal cord injury sustained at the C5/C6 level leaves an individual without voluntary control of the muscles of the forearm, hand, or of the elbow extensors. The objective of this research project was to integrate functional neuromuscular stimulation (FNS) control of elbow extension with a previously developed system that provides hand grasp in order to increase the working volume in space in which users can perform functional tasks. Elbow extension control was achieved by detecting the position of the arm in space and determining the magnitude of the gravitational moment acting to oppose ext

A new method of direct endoscopy of the subarachnoid space and a major part of the ventricles of the human central nervous system is presented. The technique was developed on more than 100 human bodies with the help of a bronchoscope. Percutaneous entry into the subarachnoidal space is performed from the dorsal side between vertebrae L5 and S1. The endoscope can be moved along the spinal cord on both the dorsal and the ventral side. From the dorsal side of spinal cord the cerebello-medullary cistern can be reached. The fourth ventricle is entered through the median aperture and then the third

Regenerative medicine is vital for counteracting astronaut bone loss in microgravity, where reduced mechanical loading accelerates osteopenia and impairs fracture healing. Current countermeasures like exercise and drugs help, but advanced regenerative solutions are needed. Bone-on-chip (BOC) technology, a microfluidic system mimicking bone physiology, enables precise studies of bone formation and degeneration in space. Adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) committed to osteogenic differentiation (osASCs) offer a promising alternative to primary osteoblasts due to their ease of isolation, expansion

Long-duration spaceflight can have adverse effects on human health. One of the most common ocular conditions experienced by astronauts is dry eye disease (DED). Symptoms of DED include feelings of eye irritation, eye strain, foreign body sensation and blurred vision. Over 30% of International Space Station expedition crew members reported irritation and foreign body sensation. We reviewed the current literature on the prevalence and mechanisms of DED in astronauts and its potential implications for long-duration spaceflight, including the influence of environmental factors, such as microgravit

This is a basic study designed to elucidate the correlation between the different cranial dimensions to the lengths of the hard palate and retropalatal space in dry skulls. A craniometric analysis is reported for 89 adult Japanese dry skulls. Eight dimensions were measured. The results of the study revealed that the cranial size has statistically significant correlations to the length of the hard palate and retropalatal space. It also revealed that a different pattern of correlation exists in the male and the female skulls. This study is probably the first of its kind. The results will serve a

Despite the growing problem of anxiety and depression amongst young people aged 14-24 years living in urban settings, reviews about the role of exposure to green and blue spaces or nature in preventing anxiety and depression tend to focus on children, adults or sometimes adolescents. This review aims to explore whether exposure to green and blue spaces reduces the risk of anxiety and depression among young people aged 14-24 years living in urban settings and provide a conceptual framework. This field experiment examined whether the well-documented benefit of spaced over massed training for humans and other animals generalizes to horses. Twenty-nine randomly selected horses (Equus ferus caballus) repeatedly encountered a novel obstacle-crossing task while under saddle. Horses were randomly assigned to the spaced-training condition (2 min work, 2 min rest, 2 min work, 2 min rest) or the massed-training condition (4 min work, 4 min rest). Total training time per session and total rest per session were held constant. Days between sessions (M = 3) were held as consistent as possible

BACKGROUND: Subchondral insufficiency fracture of the knee (SIFK) is commonly associated with medial meniscus posterior root tears (MMPRTs). However, there is limited research investigating risk factors for SIFK in patients with MMPRTs.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this investigation was to identify the risk factors for SIFK in patients with MMPRTs. It was hypothesized that age, body mass index, and extent of meniscal extrusion would emerge as significant risk factors for SIFK.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4.
METHODS: Patients with a primary isolated MMPRT confirmed v

BACKGROUND: Manned space exploration missions have developed at a rapid pace, with missions to Mars likely to be in excess of 1000 days being planned for the next 20 years. As such, it is important to understand and address the challenges that astronauts face, such as higher radiation exposure, altered gravity, and isolation. Meanwhile, until now the formulation of space food systems has not focused on non-nutrients, and has not considered issues arising from their absence during space missions or the possibility of them to solve the challenges caused by space hazards.
AIMS: This study invest

Astronauts encounter several challenges on spaceflight missions, including space radiation and microgravity. Over the past several decades, studies conducted in the field of space medicine have uncovered broad impacts on human physiology, including the integumentary system, which serves as a protective barrier to environmental factors. Dermatological alterations in astronauts are commonly observed during spaceflight missions. Advancing our understanding of the intracellular mechanisms impacted in skin within the context of microgravity may uncover potential therapies for maintaining and improv

Carbon dioxide (CO2) can be transformed into valuable chemical building blocks, including C2-carboxylated 1,3-azoles, which have potential applications in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and pesticides. However, only a small fraction of the millions of available 1,3-azoles are carboxylated at the C2 position, highlighting significant opportunities for further research in the synthesis and application of these compounds. In this study, we utilized a supervised machine learning approach to predict reaction yields for a data set of amide-coupled C2-carboxylated 1,3-azoles. To facilitate molecular des

Creating accurate organoid models remains a challenge, particularly for diseases like glioblastoma (GBM), an aggressive, treatment-resistant brain cancer with an immunosuppressive microenvironment. To overcome limitations of Earth-based models (sedimentation and disaggregation) and leverage the unique advantages of space (accelerated disease progression and immune dysregulation), this study utilizes a panel of GBM-myeloid organoids cultured for 40 d aboard the International Space Station. Spaceflight-grown GBM organoids have more uniform morphology compared to ground controls. We observed a co

Long-duration space missions pose a considerable risk to eye health, and visual dysfunction is recognized as a primary health concern for astronauts. Hence, we have developed a series of review reports to study the effects of space on the eye, called AstroOphthalmology (including Basics, Ocular Anterior Segment, Ocular Posterior Segment). This report serves as the first report of our series, and integrates the current insights into the pathophysiological consequences of the space environment on the eye. The two key space-specific stressors include microgravity and cosmic radiation. Both stress
