A new sesquiterpene isocyanide, 3-oxo-axisonitrile-3 (1), with a spiro [5,6] decane skeleton (spiroaxane) together with a known related sesquiterpene isonitrile (2), sesquiterpene isothiocyanates (3-8) and two diterpene isonitriles (9, 10) have been isolated from the Chinese marine sponge Acanthella sp. We report the synthesis of highly luminescent CdTe/ZnS and CdHgTe/ZnS core/shell semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs). A hybrid of two synthesis routes leads to novel nanocrystal compositions and small core/shell sizes (4-5 nm) that emit in the far-red and near-infrared regions. These particles exhibit higher resistance to oxidation and photobleaching, have high quantum yields, and could be used for biological labeling and imaging.

U.v.-visible-absorption and e.p.r. spectroscopy were used to study the type 2 and type 3 copper centres in the mercury derivative of laccase. A white-light-emitting diode (white LED) with good color rendering index is fabricated based on a blue LED combined with high-fluorescence CdS:Cu/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) and YAG:Ce phosphors. CdS nanoparticles with different size are prepared by chemical bath deposition method. These particles show strong fluorescence at emission wavelength of 507 nm. It has been observed that this emission peak changes through a range of 147 nm, by varying the excitation wavelengths through 370-480 nm.The emission peak can thus be tuned by varying the excitation wavelengths. This peak emission wavelength shift is due to the selective excitation of vibronic levels in the surface state of the CdS nanoparticles.

While aminothiols produce weak purple-colored reactions with ninhydrin, we demonstrate for the first time that this color could be intensely developed. Using a D-penicillamine paradigm, adsorption of this compound via a disulfide bond onto thiol-reactive solid prior to ninhydrin reaction allowed spectrophotometrical monitoring of the supernatant at 570 nm. An easy to employ method for the determination of melamine in milk powder samples using CZE with either UV or MS detection is presented.
