Infants' vocalizations as a diagnostic tool.

This article reviews the literature concerning infants' vocalizations and their relation to development of language and to diagnosis in studies of pathology. Some researchers believe that pre-speech vocalizations are reflexes, random activities that serve as practice for motor activities. Others believe they are directly related to the development of language. The literature reviewed dealing with the relationship between abnormal cries and pathology suggest a differential diagnosis of certain pathologies. Crying should be included in the collected symptoms to achieve a more accurate and compre

Monogenic and chromosomal causes of isolated speech and language impairment.

The importance of a precise molecular diagnosis for children with intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder and epilepsy has become widely accepted and genetic testing is an integral part of the diagnostic evaluation of these children. In contrast, children with an isolated speech or language disorder are not often genetically evaluated, despite recent evidence supporting a role for genetic factors in the aetiology of these disorders. Several chromosomal copy number variants and single gene disorders associated with abnormalities of speech and language have been identified. Individuals

'Team Speech Sounds'-How Speech and Language Therapists Work With Parents of Young Children With Speech Sound Disorder: A Focus Group Study.

BACKGROUND: Speech sound disorder (SSD) is common amongst children on speech and language therapy caseloads, with most of these children being between 2 and 6 years old. SSD that persists into a child's school years can have a lasting impact on literacy development, socio-emotional outcomes and well-being. Effective intervention in the preschool years is therefore vital. Evidence shows speech and language therapists (SLT) believe working with parents is essential for a child's progress, and positive relationships between SLTs and parents facilitate engagement with home practice. However, littl

Speech and language therapists' perceptions of corporate practice in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Corporate speech and language therapy (CSALT) is an emerging field that extends the role of speech and language therapists (SALTs) into corporate environments, enhancing workplace communication and interpersonal skills. While internationally recognised, CSALT remains underexplored in South Africa, where linguistic and cultural diversity present challenges and opportunities for its integration. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore South African SALTs' perceptions of CSALT. METHOD: A qualitative research approach was employed, grounded in a constructivist paradigm. Semi-structur

A survey of speech and language therapists' opinions of bilingualism and the advice they give to bilingual families of children with speech, language and communication needs - a comparative study between the UK and Singapore.

There is emerging evidence that bilingualism is advantageous to children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN), reflected in recommendations to promote maintenance of the home language. However, little is known about Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs)' opinions on bilingualism and practices with bilingual families. To survey the opinions and practices of SLTs on this topic, a questionnaire was developed and delivered as an anonymous web-based survey. We recruited SLTs from Singapore, where bilingualism is the norm amongst the general population and enshrined in government pol

"An Unequal Two-Way Endeavor": Building Harmonious Collaboration Between Itinerant Speech-Language Pathologists and Teachers.

PURPOSE: This study explored how itinerant speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and school teachers in Taiwan collaborate to deliver effective speech-language therapy (SLT) within a teacher-centered model. Whereas school-based SLT in many Western contexts typically involves therapists embedded full-time within schools, Taiwan relies primarily on an itinerant service model in which SLPs travel across multiple schools with limited onsite presence. This structural difference requires intensive interprofessional coordination to support students with speech, language, and communication needs. METHO

An Observational Study of Discourse Tasks and Running Speech Sampling in the Assessment of Paediatric Voice Quality.

INTRODUCTION: Running speech sampling is an essential component of a paediatric voice evaluation, in that it should provide the examiner with a representative vocal sample of the child's everyday voice use outside of the clinic setting. Current speech sampling practices, consisting of reading tasks, informal conversation sampling and the voice question ('Tell me about your voice problem'), may not elicit consistent samples or samples of sufficient length to allow the examiner to make a reliable and valid judgement about vocal quality. The aim of this study is to compare the voice quality of ch

State of the art in speech perception assessment.

OBJECTIVE: Perceptual assessment constitutes a critical component of the evaluation process in deaf patients, providing essential information on speech perception abilities and informing auditory rehabilitation strategies. In the absence of standardized guidelines, existing clinical practices appear highly variable, both in terms of assessment tools and methodological approaches. The objective of this study was to characterize the assessment instruments currently employed by French-speaking speech-language therapists to evaluate the various domains of speech perception in deaf children and adu

Alterations and Preservations: Practices and Perspectives of Speech-Language Pathologists Regarding the Intervention of Thickened Liquids for Swallowing Problems.

PURPOSE: The intervention of thickened liquids (TL) is commonly used to reduce aspiration in people with dysphagia. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have traditionally believed it is an effective intervention. Recent articles highlight limited evidence, poor acceptance, and a variety of unintended consequences. This study explores if current debates have been reflected in SLP practices and perspectives. METHOD: An e-survey was developed. Participants were recruited via professional associations in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Descriptive and i

Psychological counseling as an adjunct to stuttering treatment: Clients' experiences and perceptions.

PURPOSE: Stuttering can trigger anxiety and other psychological and emotional reactions, and limit participation in society. It is possible that psychological counseling could enhance stuttering treatment outcomes; however, little is known about how clients view such counseling. The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of clients' experiences with, and perceptions of, a psychological counseling service that was offered as an optional adjunct to speech therapy for stuttering. METHOD: Nine individuals who stutter (13-38 years old) participated in semi-structured interviews. Six pa

Ethical Challenges and Considerations in Dysphagia Management: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Speech and language therapists (SLTs) working in dysphagia care regularly navigate complex ethical dilemmas involving clinical risk, patient autonomy and cultural considerations. While ethical principles are well-recognized in the field, consolidated evidence mapping how these principles and ethical reasoning components have been represented in the literature over time remains limited. This review offers a comprehensive synthesis of ethical challenges in dysphagia management across decades and contexts, uniquely structured using Rest's Four-Component Model of ethical behaviour. ME
