Swollen Optic Disc and Sinusitis.

PURPOSE: To present a case of optic disc swelling caused by sinusitis. METHODS: Ocular symptoms were investigated using computed tomography imaging of the facial bones to detect the relationship between the sinus inflammation and the optic nerve. RESULTS: A particular configuration of the optic nerve was detected. Optic nerve course through the inflamed sphenoidal sinus is a condition associated with a greater risk of inflammation. CONCLUSION: Sinusitis is a rare but treatable cause of optic neuritis. The choice of the correct radiological investigation to be done to set up a proper treatme

[Osteomas of the paranasal sinuses].

A group of 86 patients with osteomas on the bones of the skull and face, 21 suffered from osteomas of the paranasal sinuses. The mean age of the patients was 50 years, with a predominance of male subjects (2/1). The frontal sinus was the frequently involved (57%), followed by the maxillary, ethmoid and the sphenoid sinuses. Diagnosis was made accidentally in 45% of the cases. The most frequent presenting symptom was headache (57%). Simple excision of the osteoma paranasal sinus was possible in 18 cases. We realize a study of the facts, as well as a review of the literature to know the incidenc

[Preoperative roentgendiagnostic of the naso-maxillary sinuses and operative findings (author's transl)].

The preoperative roentgenmorphology of the nasomaxillary sinuses was compared with the intraoperative findings. The dates of 285 patients were evaluated. For the maxillary sinus there was correspondency in 85.7%. There were no differences in the cases explored with tomography. For the ethmoidal sinus there was correspondency in 89.5% and for the frontal sinus in 82.7%. The importance of the preoperative roentgenexamination with the standard exposure in occipitomental projection was less the demonstration of the inflammation than of other findings. The sphenoidal sinus was best explored by tomo

Epistaxis as the First Manifestation of Silent Renal Cell Carcinoma: A Case Report with Relevant Literature Review.

The paranasal sinuses are known to be a rare location for metastasis. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most frequent primary tumor to metastasize to the sinonasal region, followed by lung and breast cancer. In particular, clear cell type RCC, which represents approximately 85% of RCCs, is characterized by early metastasis, and it sometimes spreads to unusual sites (1, 2). Metastatic tumors in the paranasal sinuses are distributed in the maxillary, sphenoid, ethmoid, and frontal sinuses, in order of decreasing frequency. Symptoms are usually nonspecific, but epistaxis is the most common sign,

An Incidental Finding of a Sphenoid Sinolith: A Case Report.

Sinoliths are mineral deposits that occur within the paranasal sinus due to long-standing obstruction and lack of drainage. It is a rare differential diagnosis for intrasinus lesions found on imaging. On computed tomography (CT) of the head, these calcifications are visualized as dense radiopaque bodies within the sinuses. Typically, patients with sinoliths are asymptomatic, but if complications of chronic obstruction and recurring sinusitis arise, endoscopic removal of the sinolith may be recommended. Here, we present a 95-year-old female found to have a sinolith in the sphenoid sinus on inci

Sinus barotrauma--late diagnosis and treatment with computer-aided endoscopic surgery.

Sinus barotrauma is usually easy to diagnose, and treatment achieves good results. We present two severe cases where delayed diagnosis caused significant morbidity. The signs and symptoms were atypical and neither the patients themselves, nor the initial examiners recognized that the onset of symptoms coincided with descent in a commercial airliner. CT and MRI scans of the brain were normal, but in both cases showed opafication of the sphenoid sinuses, which lead to the correct diagnosis. Subsequent surgical intervention consisting of endoscopic computer-aided surgery showed blood and petechia

Two- and three-dimensional anatomy of paranasal sinuses in Arabian foals.

The 2- and 3-dimensional (3D) anatomy and the morphometric properties of the paranasal sinuses of the foal have received little or no attention in the literature. The aim of this study was to obtain details of the paranasal sinuses using multiplane CT imaging to create 3D models and to determine morphological and morphometric data for the sinuses using the 3D models. The heads of five female foals were used in this study. The heads were scanned using computed tomography (CT) in the rostrocaudal direction. After the heads had been frozen, anatomical sections were obtained in the scan position.

A rare anatomical malformation of the sphenoid sinus: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Sphenoid sinuses, air-filled cavities in the sphenoid bone, develop between the 3rd and 4th year and mature by 12 to 16 years. Understanding their anatomy is vital for safe transsphenoidal surgeries because of nearby vital structures. They exhibit variable pneumatization and often have an intersinus septum. This case emphasizes the importance of understanding sphenoid sinus anatomy, particularly in the context of transsphenoidal surgeries. It also introduces a novel case involving a congenital roof defect, previously unreported in medical literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year

Anatomographic Variants of Sphenoid Sinus in Ethiopian Population.

Neurosurgeons often neglect the sphenoid sinus due to its deep location and difficulties in accessing during surgical interventions. Disease of the sphenoid sinus is difficult to diagnose since its presenting symptoms are difficult to recognize. Moreover, compared with other paranasal sinuses, the sphenoid sinus is considered the most variable air sinus in terms of its degree of pneumatization, number and position of inter-sinus septa, and its relationship with the surrounding anatomical structures. Anatomical variations of the sphenoid sinus are significant from a neurosurgical point of view.

Solitary Sphenoid Sinus Lesion Presenting as Chronic Headache.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Headache is a common symptom with etiologies that are difficult to distinguish, 1 of which is sinusitis. A solitary sphenoid lesion, which is rare, can also cause acute or chronic headaches. The authors investigated whether endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) for solitary sphenoid lesions could reduce headache symptoms. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The authors reviewed the charts of patients who underwent ESS from 2012 to 2017, whose main symptom was a chronic headache for several years. There were no remarkable pathologic findings in the nasal cavity upon endoscopic examinatio

Comparative analysis of 3D reconstruction of paranasal sinuses for simulated personal identification using Dolphin imaging and mimics software.

3D reconstructed paranasal sinuses are gaining increasing attention for personal identification. This study assessed the consistency between Dolphin Imaging and Mimics in 3D paranasal sinus reconstruction and the comparative efficacy of combined frontal, sphenoid, and maxillary sinuses versus isolated frontal sinus for personal identification through simulation of ante-mortem and post-mortem data. Retrospective multi-slice CT scans from 100 patients (21-84 years; 50 for each gender) were used to generate 3D models of combined sinuses via both software. Three groups were established: (1) 100 ma

CT findings in involvement of the paranasal sinuses by lepromatous leprosy.

The role of nasal infection in the transmission of leprosy has been extensively studied. Leprosy can affect the paranasal sinuses due to mucosal continuity and bacillaemia. This prospective study was performed on 25 untreated patients with lepromatous leprosy. 5 mm contiguous axial and coronal CT sections of paranasal sinuses, on soft tissue and bone windows, were obtained in all patients. Each sinus was examined for mucosal thickening, soft tissue densities and bony outlines. Representative biopsies were taken from ethmoid sinus to confirm the radiological diagnosis in 12 patients with multip

Ectopic anterior pituitary corticotropic tumour in a six-year-old boy. Histological, ultrastructural and immunocytochemical study.

The report documents a silent, oncocytic, ACTH-producing ectopic anterior pituitary tumour in a 6-year-old boy. The invasive intrahemispheric neoplasm had no connection with the pituitary gland, the sella turcica or the sphenoid sinuses. The apparent similarities existing between this tumour, some choroid plexus carcinomas and steroid-producing neoplasms are discussed.

Clinically relevant morphometric analysis of pterygopalatine fossa and its volumetric relationship with adjacent paranasal sinuses: a CT-based study.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to perform morphometric measurements of the pterygopalatine fossa (PPF), the transition zone to critical neurovascular structures. The second aim was to investigate the relationship between the volumes of the PPF and the paranasal sinuses and the effect of nasal septum deviation (NSD) types on all these measurements. METHODS: We performed PPF's morphometry and all volume measurements on the CT images of 260 patients (130 male and 130 female, age range 18-79). RESULTS: All volumetric measurements and the angle between foramen rotundum (FR) and pterygomaxillary fis

[The paranasal sinuses as metastatic site of renal cell carcinoma].

BACKGROUND: Malignant tumors very seldom establish metastasis in the paranasal sinuses. Renal cell carcinomas (RCC) are one of the possible primary tumors displaying metastases in this location. The incidence of metastasis from the renal cell carcinoma in the paranasal sinuses is higher as would be expected by the incidence of this tumor. PATIENTS: We report here about 3 patients from the ENT clinic with metastasis in the paranasal sinus derived from primary RCC. Two of them showed metastases in the maxillary sinus and the third patient had a metastasis in the sphenoid sinus. RESULTS AND CON

[Clinical diagnosis and treatment of nasal sinus mucoceles with visual loss].

OBJECTIVE: To review the clinical manifestations and management of nasal sinus mucoceles with visual loss. METHOD: Medical records for 23 patients of paranasal sinus mucoceles with visual impairment were re viewed retrospectively during 8-year period (from 2002 to 2010). Ten mucoceles were found in the frontal or fronto-ethmoidal sinuses, 6 in the ethmoidal sinuses, 7 in the sphenoidal or spheno-ethmoidal sinuses. Because the majority of early chief complaints were problems related to vision, patients were often seen by ophthalmologists first. Poor vision was more common in patients with sphe

HDAC inhibitor AR-42 decreases CD44 expression and sensitizes myeloma cells to lenalidomide.

BACKGROUND: Nasal myiasis, an infestation by fly larvae, is a rare condition typically associated with immunocompromised individuals, poor hygiene, and low socioeconomic status. It is commonly seen in tropical regions and is often linked to chronic sinonasal diseases or underlying health conditions. However, cases in healthy individuals without predisposing factors are uncommon, making this case novel and worthy of documentation. The importance of timely diagnosis and effective management in preventing severe complications cannot be overstated. CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old male presented

Analysis of Sinus Inflammation Associated With Maxillary Sinus Fungal Ball Based on CT Imaging.

Background: Paranasal sinus fungal balls usually occur unilaterally, and the maxillary sinus is most commonly involved. However, other sinuses could be concomitantly inflammed, and this phenomenon is rarely discussed. Aims/Objectives: To evaluate the severity of maxillary sinus fungal ball (MSFB) and the occurrence of sinus inflammation in paranasal sinuses according to the image findings and analyze the potential correlations. Material and Methods: A total of 1226 cases of MSFB were divided into 2 groups according to ostiomeatal complex obstruction on computed tomography. The potential correl
