Cross-sectional spinal canal area was measured before and after surgery in 12 patients with thoracolumbar burst fractures and canal narrowing caused by retropulsed fragments. Patients were classified into Denis type A or type B. Denis type A fractures have comminution of both end-plates of the vertebral body creating multiple smaller fractures; Denis type B fractures have comminution of the superior end-plate only with a single vertical fracture line into the inferior end-plate creating larger fragments. The degree of neurologic impairment was assessed before and after surgery using the Franke

Although rodents have been widely used for experimental models of spinal cord diseases, the details of the growth curves of their spinal canal and spinal cord, as well as the molecular mechanism of the growth of adult rat spinal cords remain unavailable. They are particularly important when conducting the experiments of cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM), since the disease condition depends on the size of the spinal canal and the spinal cord. Thus, the purposes of the present study were to obtain accurate growth curves for the spinal canal and spinal cord in rats; to define the appropriate

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether a visually apparent increase in the anteroposterior diameter of the spinal canal ("wide canal sign") can be used reliably to differentiate degenerative from isthmic spondylolisthesis on midline sagittal MR images. We hypothesized that the wide canal sign would be present only in isthmic spondylolisthesis, where the vertebral ring is disrupted by defects in the pars interarticularis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The midline sagittal MR images of 100 control subjects without spondylolysis or spondylolisthesis were analyzed to establish the

Background/Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the use of BioGlue® increases the risk of postoperative mass formation and subsequent spinal canal invasion after intradural spinal tumor surgery. Methods: After retrospectively reviewing patients who underwent intradural tumor surgery from 2018 to 2023, we evaluated mass formation as detected in postoperative MRI according to the Epidural Spinal Cord Compression (ESCC) grade. Patients were divided into two groups based on the use of BioGlue®, and we analyzed MRI postoperatively to compare the differences in ESCC grades and t

Cervical stenosis is a clinical picture that is regularly encountered by both hospital physicians and orthopedic surgeons in the daily clinical practice. While advanced cervical spinal canal stenosis may lead to myelopathic symptoms in cases of sufficient manifestation and spinal cord injury, neuroforaminal stenosis leads to radicular symptoms due to compression of the nerve roots. The clinical examination can provide initial clues as to the suspected cause of the patient's symptoms; however, reliable diagnostics are based only on sectional imaging of the cervical spine. Depending on the exten

Lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LSS) or mechanical compression of dorsal root ganglion (DRG) is one of the causes of low back pain and neuropathic pain (NP). Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) is a potent bioactive lipid mediator that is produced mainly from lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) via autotaxin (ATX) and is known to induce NP via LPA1 receptor signaling in mice. Recently, we demonstrated that LPC and LPA were higher in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with LSS. Based on the possible potential efficacy of the ATX inhibitor for NP treatment, we used an NP model with compression of DRG (CD mod

STUDY DESIGN: Observational study.
PURPOSE: To evaluate healthy volunteers and patients with spinal canal lesions using apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps with diffusion-weighted imaging.
OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Decompression surgery for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is selected on the basis of subjective assessment and cross-sectional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, there is no objective standard for this procedure.
METHODS: We performed 3T MRI in 10 healthy volunteers and 13 patients with LSS. The ADC values in the spinal canal were evaluated at 46 vertebrae (L4/5 and L5/

BACKGROUND: Back pain due to prolapsed intervertebral disc accounts for two thirds of all visits to the orthopaedic clinic. The incidence of this disease is increasing with the increased sports activities in the young and due to degeneration in the elderly. Open lumbar microdiscectomy remains the gold standard amongst surgical procedures for herniated discs with or without instrumentation. However, percutaneous/ endoscopic microdiscectomy is gaining popularity. In our environment, high cost and paucity of instrumentation and skills militate against the use of such technique. In the western wor

RATIONALE: Spinal cord infarction is one of the complications of epidural steroid injections (ESIs), but has only been reported in cervical vertebra by transforaminal injection and lumbar vertebra by transforaminal injection; and up to now, there is no reporting about spinal cord infarction caused by caudal injection. Here, we report a case.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 52-year-old man was admitted to our hospital. He was diagnosed as lumbar disc herniation in other hospital, and the patient suffered bilateral lower limb motor and sensory disorders after administration of caudal ESI.
DIAGNOSIS: Spina

Lumbar stenosis has become one of the most common spinal pathologies and one that results in neurogenic claudication, back and leg pain, and disability. The standard procedure is still an open laminectomy, which involves wide muscle retraction and extensive removal of the posterior spinal structures. This can lead to instability and the need for additional spinal fusion. We present a systemized and detailed approach to unilateral laminotomy for bilateral decompression, which we believe is superior to the standard open laminectomy in terms of intraoperative visualization, postoperative stabilit

Spinal cord sarcoidosis is a rare manifestation of sarcoidosis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of spinal cord sarcoidosis sometimes resembles that of the non-inflammatory spinal cord lesion. (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) is an effective method to detect both systemic and central nervous system lesions in sarcoidosis. This study compared the standard uptake value (SUV) of FDG-PET between spinal cord sarcoidosis and non-inflammatory spinal cord lesions. We retrospectively reviewed the records of patients who underwent both spinal MRI and FDG-PET scans. We used

A 46-year-old woman presented with multiple neurenteric cysts in the posterior fossa and spinal canal. Neuroimaging demonstrated neurenteric cysts in the interspace between the left cerebellar hemisphere and vermis, the lateral side of the right cerebellar hemisphere, and the ventral side of the spinal cord at the C-2 and C-4 levels. Total resection of the paravermian cyst and partial removal of the spinal cyst at the C-4 level were performed. Histological examination showed the cyst wall consisted of single or multiple layers of columnar epithelial cells with secretory granules, with mucin se

A search of the English-language medical literature found only two cases in which expansion of an osteochondroma into the lumbar spinal canal caused sciatica. We report another two cases of spinal nerve root compression by solitary lumbar spinal canal osteochondromas: in a 56-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman with no history of hereditary multiple exostoses. Osteochondromas compressing the spinal nerve root were seen at the inferior articular processes of the lumbar vertebrae by computed tomography (CT), three-dimensional reconstruction of CT scans, myelography, and magnetic resonance imagi

Spinal canal dimensions are assumed to play a significant role with regard to the development of symptoms in individuals with disc herniations. The literature is inconclusive on the significance of spinal canal size as a risk factor for sciatica, mainly because of study design problems. The objective of this study, therefore, was to test the hypothesis that spinal canal dimensions are a significant risk factor for the development of sciatica, comparing symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals. Thirty symptomatic patients undergoing lumbar discectomy and 45 asymptomatic volunteers were investig
