[Arthropathies in intestinal diseases].

Together with gastroenterologists rheumatologists describe diagnostically significant disturbances of the supporting apparatus and the locomotor system which frequently occur in ulcerous colitis, enterocolitis regionalis Crohn, Whipple's disease and non-tropical sprue. Important conclusion for the diagnostic approach supplement the description.

Influence of systemic infections on xylose absorption.

Serial blood-xylose concentrations have been determined in 28 Papua New Guineans after 25 g oral xylose; 9 had an acute and 8 a chronic systemic infection, 4 the tropical splenomegaly syndrome and 7 were free of infection. Mean xylose was significantly depressed at 30, 60, 90 and 120 min in those with acute and chronic infections. Correlations between xylose and serum albumin, alpha 1, alpha 2, beta- and gamma-globulin concentrations were not significant. When the xylose test is used in tropical countries the effect of systemic infections on the result must be careful evaluated, otherwise trop

Persistent diarrhea in the returning traveler: think beyond persistent infection.

The report describes a young female United Nations worker, stationed in East Timor for an extended duration, who presented with persistent travelers' diarrhea and who was convinced that she was harboring a persistent infestation. In fact, careful history, laboratory evaluation and endoscopy with duodenal biopsies found all the classical hallmarks of unmasked celiac sprue. The patient then had a dramatic response to a gluten-free diet, with complete resolution of symptoms. Persistent travelers' diarrhea is an entity which carries an interesting and extensive differential diagnosis beyond persis

Contamination of the small intestine by enterotoxigenic coliform bacteria among the rural population of Haiti.

Coliform bacteria were isolated by either aerobic or anaerobic culture techniques from aspirates of the proximal small intestine of 4 of 5 Haitians with tropical sprue, but not from any of 10 well nourished Haitians who had milder gastrointestinal complaints and abnormalities. Klebsiella (Klebsiella pneumoniae and Klebsiella ozaenae) was cultured from the jejunal aspirates of 2 sprue patients and Escherichiae coli from the other 2. Fifteen colonies of coliform bacteria cultured from each aspirate were specifically identified by their biotype. In three instances, every colony in each aspirate w

Disorders associated with malabsorption of iron: A critical review.

Malabsorption is a disorder of the gastrointestinal tract that leads to defective digestion, absorption and transport of important nutrients across the intestinal wall. Small intestine is the major site where most of the nutrients are absorbed. There are three main mechanisms of malabsorption; premucosal, mucosal and postmucosal. Premucosal malabsorption is the inadequate digestion due to improper mixing of gastrointestinal enzymes and bile with chyme. This could be because of surgical resection of the small intestine or a congenital deficiency of the enzymes and bile responsible for digestion
