[Carpal tunnel syndrome: Rare causes and associated forms behind a common and stereotyped affection].

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is too common a condition not to daily interact with the practitioner, if only because of its entanglement to other pathologies, causal or chance association. The typical symptomatology, with hand paresthesia and morning pain upon waking, is related to a median nerve injury in the confined space of the carpal tunnel, more often by local inflammation and tenosynovitis of the finger flexors (repetitive activity of the hands). SCC may be secondary to situations (pregnancy) or conditions (edema, hypothyroidism…), which exaggerate the ordinary pathophysiology or cause d

Active coping shields against negative aging self-stereotypes contributing to psychiatric conditions.

RATIONALE: Psychiatric conditions are often falsely considered inherent to aging. We examined whether negative age stereotypes, which older individuals tend to assimilate from the environment across their lifespan, contributed to an increased risk of developing four psychiatric conditions, and, if so, whether this risk was reduced through active coping. METHOD: The sample consisted of participants aged 55 years and older, free of the psychiatric conditions at baseline, drawn from the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study, a nationally representative sample. New cases of posttraumat

Variation in sequence dynamics improves maintenance of stereotyped behavior in an example from bird song.

Performing a stereotyped behavior successfully over time requires both maintaining performance quality and adapting efficiently to environmental or physical changes affecting performance. The bird song system is a paradigmatic example of learning a stereotyped behavior and therefore is a good place to study the interaction of these two goals. Through a model of bird song learning, we show how instability in neural representation of stable behavior confers advantages for adaptation and maintenance with minimal cost to performance quality. A precise, temporally sparse sequence from the premotor

Prevalence and determinants of stereotypic behaviours and physiological stress among tigers and leopards in Indian zoos.

India's charismatic wildlife species are facing immense pressure from anthropogenic-induced environmental perturbations. Zoos play a major r … usca between April 2014 and March 2015. Behavioural observations showed that tigers spent more time stereotyping (12%) than leopards (7%) during daylight hours. Stress levels assessed using FCM revealed that tigers (23.6 ± 1.62 ng/g) had marginally lower level of corticosterone metabolites than leopards (27.2 ±1.36 ng/g). Stereotypic behaviour increased signif …

Controlling images: How awareness of group stereotypes affects Black women's well-being.

This paper presents research exploring how stereotypes that are simultaneously racialized and gendered affect Black women. We investigated the mental and physical health consequences of Black women's awareness that others hold these stereotypes and tested whether this association was moderated by the centrality of racial identity. A structural equation model tested among 609 young Black women revealed that metastereotype awareness (i.e., being aware that others hold negative stereotypes of one's group) predicted negative mental health outcomes (e.g., depression, anxiety, hostility), which, in

Tailored Enrichment Strategies and Stereotypic Behavior in Captive Individually Housed Macaques (Macaca spp.).

The welfare of nonhuman animals in captivity is widely dependent on the natural psychological, physical, and behavioral needs of the animals and how adequately these needs are met. Inability to engage in natural behaviors can lead to chronic stress and expression of stereotypic behavior. The majority of research on decreasing stereotypic behavior in captivity addresses problems at the group level and does not account for individual variability in each animal's needs, history, and preferences. This study combined physiological and behavioral measures of well being to comprehensively assess the

Being black in a white skin: Beliefs and stereotypes around albinism at a South African university.

Background: Partly because of the legacy of apartheid, and despite being a constitutional democracy, South Africa continues to be a deeply divided society, particularly along racial lines. In this context many people with albinism do not fit neatly into black and white categories and are likely to experience social discrimination and marginalisation. Objectives: The study endeavoured to explore the beliefs and practices regarding albinism within a South African university, and the availability of support services. Method: The research was located within an interpretive qualitative paradigm and

Left-hand dominance in children: Prevalence and maternal stereotypes in a South-east Nigerian city.

The objectives of the study are to estimate the prevalence of left-hand dominance among children of selected mothers in an urban city and to determine the mothers' stereotypes about left-handedness. A cross-sectional study of mothers (N = 222) selected by systematic random sampling was done. The mothers were interviewed with structured questionnaires. Data were analyzed with appropriate descriptive statistics on SPSS. The estimated prevalence of left-hand dominance in their children was 7.52%. A left-handed mother was more likely to have a left-handed child. A substantial number of the mothers

An Exploration Based Cognitive Bias Test for Mice: Effects of Handling Method and Stereotypic Behaviour.

Behavioural tests to assess affective states are widely used in human research and have recently been extended to animals. These tests assume that affective state influences cognitive processing, and that animals in a negative affective state interpret ambiguous information as expecting a negative outcome (displaying a negative cognitive bias). Most of these tests however, require long discrimination training. The aim of the study was to validate an exploration based cognitive bias test, using two different handling methods, as previous studies have shown that standard tail handling of mice in

Symptoms, aging-stereotyped beliefs, and health-promoting behaviors of older women with and without osteoarthritis.

The purposes of this study were to examine differences in symptoms, aging-stereotyped beliefs about management of symptoms, and health-promoting behaviors depending on a diagnosis of osteoarthritis and to investigate the associations between symptoms, aging-stereotyped beliefs, and health-promoting behaviors in 171 older Korean women. Compared to older women without osteoarthritis, those with osteoarthritis reported significantly more symptoms, a higher level of aging-stereotyped beliefs, and a lower level of health-promoting behaviors. Regardless of osteoarthritis, older women suffered from m

Pyrroloquinoline quinone prevents MK-801-induced stereotypical behavior and cognitive deficits in mice.

Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ), an essential nutrient, antioxidant, redox modulator, and nerve growth factor, prevents cognitive deficits associated with oxidative stress-induced neurodegeneration. Previous molecular imaging studies also demonstrate that PQQ binds to N-methyl D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors. In this study, we investigated the effects of PQQ on stereotypical behaviors and cognitive deficits induced by MK-801, a non-competitive NMDA antagonist used to model schizophrenia. Mice were given repeated injections of MK-801 (0.5mg/kg/d) and PQQ (0.2, 2.0, or 20 μg/kg/d) for 60 days. Behav

Negative ageing stereotypes in students and faculty members from three health science schools.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the ageing stereotypes held by health students and faculty members in three health science schools in Chile. METHODS: This cross-sectional study surveyed 284 students and faculty members from the dental, physical therapy and speech therapy schools of the University of Talca, Chile. A validated 15-question questionnaire about negative stereotypes was used (CENVE). The questions were divided into three categories: (i) health, (ii) social factors and motivation and (iii) character and personality. The scores for each category were grouped into the following categories: (i)

Immune thrombocytopenia in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia is associated with stereotyped B-cell receptors.

PURPOSE: To assess biologic features related to the development of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We retrospectively analyzed 463 patients with CLL with available immunoglobulin heavy-chain variable (IGHV) gene status and B-cell receptor (BCR) configuration [heavy-chain complementary-determining region 3 (HCDR3)], of whom thirty-six developed ITP, according to previously defined criteria. Most of them had available cytogenetic analysis. RESULTS: We observed a significant association between ITP occurrence and IGHV unmut

Analyses of recombinant stereotypic IGHV3-21-encoded antibodies expressed in chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) cells that use IgH encoded by IGHV3-21 and that have a particular stereotypic third CDR (HCDR3), DANGMDV (motif-1), almost invariably express Ig L chains (IgL) encoded by IGLV3-21, whereas CLL that use IGHV3-21-encoded IgH with another stereotypic HCDR3, DPSFYSSSWTLFDY (motif-2), invariably express κ-IgL encoded by IGKV3-20. This nonstochastic pairing could reflect steric factors that preclude these IgH from pairing with other IgL or selection for an Ig with a particular Ag-binding activity. We generated rIg with IGHV3-21-encoded IgH with HCDR3 motif-1 or -2

Stereotyped paroxysmal psychiatric symptoms during oculogyric crisis or 'cognitive dystonia': a case report.

Oculogyric crisis (OGC) is an acute dystonia which can occur after initiation of antipsychotic treatment. Stereotypic paroxysmal psychiatric symptoms have been described along with OGC that resolve spontaneously when the later remits. We report a case of tardive OGC associated with zuclopenthixol in which there were associated paroxysmal auditory pseudohallucinations.

Female contact activates male-specific interneurons that trigger stereotypic courtship behavior in Drosophila.

We determined the cellular substrate for male courtship behavior by quasinatural and artificial stimulation of brain neurons. Activation of fruitless (fru)-expressing neurons via stimulation of thermosensitive dTrpA1 channels induced an entire series of courtship acts in male Drosophila placed alone without any courting target. By reducing the number of neurons expressing dTrpA1 by MARCM, we demonstrated that the initiation of courtship behavior is significantly correlated with the activation of the transmidline P1 interneurons, the descending P2b interneurons, or both, indicating that these i

The effect of housing and environmental enrichment on stereotyped behavior of adult vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops).

Little information is available on the response of vervet monkeys to different housing conditions or on the suitability of enrichment devices or methods for vervet monkeys. In this study, the authors evaluated the occurrence of stereotyped behavior in adult vervet monkeys under various conditions of housing and enrichment. The variables included cage size, cage level (upper or lower), enrichment with a foraging log, enrichment with an exercise cage and presence of a mate. The authors first determined the incidence of stereotyped behavior in captive-bred, singly housed adult female and male ver

[Expression of stereotyped B-cell receptor and its clinical value in chronic lymphocytic leukemia].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the expression pattern of stereotyped B-cell receptor (BCR) and its prognostic significance in Chinese chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) patients and evaluate the relationship to other prognostic markers. METHODS: Multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to identify the immunoglobulin variable heavy-chain (IGHV) segment and its mutation status in 116 CLL patients from April 1992 to April 2010. For CDR3-driven clustering, all in-frame IGHV-D-J rearrangements were aligned by the multiple sequence alignment software ClustalW2. RESULTS: There were 102 of 116

The effects of husbandry training on stereotypic pacing in captive African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus).

To examine the effects of operant conditioning on stereotypic pacing in 3 female African wild dogs located at the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston, this study made recordings of pacing behavior immediately following individual sessions of husbandry training and 2 no-training conditions. The study found significant differences in the percentage of observations spent in stereotypic pacing behaviors for all 3 dogs among the 3 different conditions. The authors discuss the data in terms of the contribution of motivated tasks to the effects and the role of food deprivation in the expression of stereotypi

Nightlife young risk behaviours in Mediterranean versus other European cities: are stereotypes true?

BACKGROUND: Mediterranean lifestyle has long been hailed as protective against certain risk behaviours and diseases. Mediterranean drinking patterns of moderate alcohol consumption as part of daily life have often been assumed to protect young people from harmful alcohol consumption, in contrast to Northern European drinking patterns. Nightlife environments are strong related to alcohol and drugs use, and other health risk behaviours but few cross-national studies have been undertaken amongst young Europeans frequenting bars and nightclubs. This study aims to understand differences in nightlif
