Medial patella luxation is a common orthopedic problem of toy and miniature breed dogs with a complex and poorly understood pathogenesis. Joint pathology increases with age and luxation grade, and surgical correction should be performed at the earliest opportunity to limit further development of skeletal abnormalities or degenerative joint disease. Combination of trochlear wedge recession or tibial crest transposition with joint imbrication-capsulectomy are sufficient to correct patella luxation in most dogs. Surgical correction of patella luxation grades 1, 2, or 3 results generally in a succ

OBJECTIVE: To report outcomes and complications of proximal tibial detorsional osteotomy (PTDO) in dogs with patellar luxation (PL).
STUDY DESIGN: Multicenter retrospective observational case series.
ANIMALS: A total of 53 stifles in 50 client-owned dogs.
METHODS: Medical records (2013-2023) were reviewed. Preoperative tibial torsion was assessed by computed tomography (CT; tibial torsion angle [TTA]) or by standardized caudocranial radiographs (tibial tuberosity alignment). Concurrent procedures and implants were recorded. Postoperative radiographs were evaluated for patellar position, tib…

OBJECTIVES: (1) To describe and compare the morphometric changes of the tibia following four virtual proximal tibial osteotomies for treatment of canine cranial cruciate ligament deficiency and (2) to determine how these changes are affected by the initial tibial plateau angle (TPA).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 30 mediolateral radiographic views of canine stifle were selected. A dedicated radiographic digital planning software was used to virtually perform four osteotomy techniques for each case: tibia plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO), cranial closing wedge osteotomy (CCWO), modified …

BACKGROUND: Maintenance and reliever therapy (MART) with budesonide/formoterol (BUD/FORM) may offer asthma control with a single inhaler. This 6-month exploratory study monitored asthma symptoms, reliever use, lung function, airway inflammation and exacerbation events to determine treatment effectiveness in patients receiving BUD/FORM MART or BUD/FORM maintenance therapy plus short-acting β2-agonist (SABA).
METHODS: In the open-label STIFLE study (NCT03924635), patients were randomised to BUD/FORM MART (100 μg/6 μg or 200 μg/6 μg per inhalation, pro re nata (PRN)) or the same dose of BUD/FORM…

CASE SUMMARY: A 12-year-old, castrated male Russian Blue cat presented with chronic right pelvic limb lameness that had markedly worsened over the previous week. Orthopaedic examination revealed cranial cruciate ligament rupture with concurrent Grade 3 medial patellar luxation (MPL) in the right stifle. Pain was elicited upon patellar reduction. Radiographs showed a tibial plateau angle (TPA) of 35° and medial deviation of the tibial tuberosity. A modified tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (mTPLO) was planned for the right pelvic limb to correct both cranial tibial thrust and MPL in a single …

Lameness related to synovial infection needs to be addressed promptly because rapid degradation of the synovial homeostasis results in permanent cartilage alterations detrimental to complete recovery. Diagnosis is based on clinical signs, synovial fluid analysis, and imaging. Commonly affected joints are the fetlock, carpus, tarsus, and stifle; shoulder, elbow, and hip may also be infected. Knowing the source of infection is essential in cases of remote septic arthritis. Antimicrobials should be administered; local delivery systems may be used. Therapy relies on the removal of inflammatory med…

Intra- and extra-articular primary synovial chondromatosis (SC) was observed in a five-year-old, entire male German Shepherd. Thousands of small cartilaginous nodules were removed from the stifle joint as well as from several adjacent muscles. Diagnosis of SC was established based on clinical, radiographic and biopsy results. The owner declined to have a new surgery performed for complete nodule removal and partial synovectomy. Nine months after the initial presentation, a proximal pathological intra- articular tibial fracture was observed and malignant transformation to chondrosarcoma was dia…

A series of polyester fiber ACL implants was studied in ovine stifle joints up to 2 years postimplantation. The implants were linked to the bone-tunnel wall by oriented fibrous tissue. Cross-sections of the tunnels showed bone ingrowth among the implant fibers at 2 years. A human trial of the Apex implant yielded a series of retrievals, some associated with gross bone-tunnel enlargement. There was no evidence of bone ingrowth in the human implants. It was hypothesized that-tunnel enlargement resulted from fretting at the implant-tissue interface in response to cyclic loads in use.

Radiographic prevalence and correlation of radiographic findings has not been performed in Lusitano Purebred horses. The aim of this study was to (1) evaluate the prevalence of primary osteoarthritis radiographic findings in Lusitano Purebred horses; (2) to assess correlations between radiographic findings in different joints of the same limb and different limbs; and (3) elucidate the effect of age in the radiographic findings. A radiographic protocol of the stifle, tarsi, fetlocks and distal limbs was done in 98 Lusitanos and the classification of the radiographs was performed using a 0-4 sca…

Pseudogout, the acute form of calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease, is a common condition in elderly human beings and is characterised by the sudden onset of intense joint pain and synovitis. It is rarely identified in animals but was diagnosed in two dogs that presented with acute lameness and pyrexia. Cytology of the synovial fluid showed a mildly elevated cell count with both non-degenerate neutrophils and mononuclear cells present. Many of the mononuclear cells and occasional neutrophils contained square or rhomboid-shaped crystals that were variable in shape and size and weakly birefr

Surgical treatment of OA is appropriate when conservative therapy fails or is inadequate. The veterinary orthopedist's goals in treatment should be to alleviate pain, maintain function, and prevent or remove the potential for further degeneration of the joint. Currently, in veterinary surgery, THR and femoral head and neck excision are the primary treatments for OA of the coxofemoral joint. Other joints are treated primarily by arthrodesis or excision arthroplasty. Arthroscopy is proving to be a valuable tool in the diagnosis and treatment of OA, and total stifle and elbow replacement and cart…

Cranial cruciate ligament disease (CCLD) is among the most common orthopedic conditions in dogs, and tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) is the current standard of care; however, long-term radiographic data on tibial plateau angle (TPA) stability specific to small-breed dogs (<10 kg) remain limited. This retrospective study evaluated radiographic correction and long-term stability of TPA following TPLO in small-breed dogs and assessed whether observed TPA changes fell within the range of measurement error. Thirty stifles from 25 small-breed dogs (body weight 2.56-9.46 kg) that underwent T…
