Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common disease with ulcers in oral cavity which may trigger chewing, speaking, and swallowing difficulties to patients. Treatment of RAS is primarily aimed at pain relief and the promotion of wound healing. However, few agents have been found to have definite effect in the management of RAS and most of the medicinal products may cause adverse reactions or other disadvantages, which makes their clinical usage questionable. The purpose of this randomized controlled clinical trial (RCT) was to assess the clinical effect of diode laser and traditional medic…

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is one of the most common oral mucosal diseases characterized by recurrent and painful ulcerations on the movable or nonkeratinized oral mucosae. Clinically, three types of RAS, namely minor, major, and herpetiform types, can be identified. RAS more commonly affects labial mucosa, buccal mucosa, and tongue. Previous studies indicate that RAS is a multifactorial T cell-mediated immune-dysregulated disease. Factors that modify the immunologic responses in RAS include genetic predisposition, viral and bacterial infections, food allergies, vitamin and microeleme…

RNA viruses that replicate in the cell cytoplasm typically concentrate their replication machinery within specialized compartments. This con … ch are phase-separated liquid compartments. Here we show that replication compartments of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) have the properties of liquid-like compartments that form by phase separation. Expression of the individual viral components of the replication machinery in cells demonstrates that the 3 viral proteins required for replication are suffic …

OBJECTIVE: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis is a common disease of the oral mucosa, affecting 20 per cent of the general population.1 However, the aetiology of this disease is unknown. This is the first controlled study to compare zinc levels in recurrent aphthous stomatitis patients with those of a well-matched, healthy, control population.
METHODS: Twenty-five patients with a history of recurrent aphthous stomatitis and 25 healthy people (control group) took part in the study. Patients aged between 20 and 40 years with recurrent oral aphthous ulcers less than 1 cm in diameter were included. Ex…

Periodontal disease has been associated with glycaemia. Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is one of the most common oral lesions and is characterized by painful recurrent oral ulcers. However, the exact cause and treatment of RAS is not yet well-known. Furthermore, there is still unknown the relationship between RAS and glycaemia. Prediabetes has shown to have role on worse metabolic profile. However, there is still no data on the relationship between prediabetes and clinical RAS. Therefore, the purpose of this hypothesis is to assess whether the prediabetes aggravate RAS.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common disease with oral ulceration in which cytokines are thought to play an important role. High levels of interleukin (IL)-6, a pro-inflammatory cytokine have been detected in the circulation of ulcer tissue. The purpose of the present study was to investigate if the IL-6 gene polymorphisms are associated with RAS or clinical characteristics of RAS in a cohort of Turkish population. 184 RAS patients and 150 healthy controls were included in the study. The genotypes of IL-6 gene -572G>C and -174G>C polymorphisms were determined using polymerase chain …

Journal of oral pathology & medicine : official publication of the International Association of Oral Pathologists and the American Academy of Oral Pathology2013eng
BACKGROUND: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common oral ulcerative condition. At ulcer sites vascular adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), E-selectin and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) are strongly expressed on blood vessels, and ICAM-1 is expressed on keratinocytes. Expression of these molecules would promote leukocyte accumulation and invasion of the epithelium. Thus, polymorphisms in these candidate genes might contribute to RAS susceptibility. We investigated whether the inheritance of specific selectin, ICAM and VCAM gene polymorphisms is associated with RAS susceptibility.

Bovine papular stomatitis virus (BPSV) is a parapoxvirus associated with papular and erosive lesions on the muzzle, lips, and oral mucosa of cattle. Teats of milking cows are occasionally affected, and the infection is frequently transmitted to human beings. The present report describes an outbreak of BPSV infection affecting cows in midwestern Brazil, with human involvement. The disease was observed in neighboring small hand-milking farms, affecting 20 milking cows. The signs included painful reddish papules, ulcers, and scabby proliferative lesions on the teats, with a clinical course of 7-1…

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis is a common disease of the oral mucosa that is characterized by recurrent, painful ulcers of unknown etiology. The association between celiac disease and recurrent aphthous stomatitis has been evaluated in several studies, but variable results have been reported. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of celiac disease in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis.
METHODS: The study group consisted of 82 patients, all of whom had a history of recurrent aphthous stomatitis. The control group included 82 patients who did not ha…

Mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitors are a class of targeted cancer therapeutic agents with clinical benefit for multiple tumor types. Oral ulcerations are a common side effect of mTOR inhibitors; however, the clinical findings resemble aphthous stomatitis rather than the mucositis seen with chemotherapy. Consequently, the appearance of aphthous-like oral ulcerations has been referred to as mTOR inhibitor-associated stomatitis (mIAS). The severity of mIAS can be minimized by following common preventive steps and initiating treatment at the first sign of mouth discomfort, thereby red…

Members of the Rhabdoviridae infect a wide variety of animals and plants, and are the causative agents of many important diseases. Rhabdoviruses enter host cells following internalization into endosomes, with the glycoprotein (G protein) mediating both receptor binding to host cells and fusion with the cellular membrane. The recently solved crystal structure of vesicular stomatitis virus G has allowed considerable insight into the mechanism of rhabdovirus entry, in particular the low pH-dependent conformational changes that lead to fusion activation. Rhabdovirus entry shows several distinct fe…

A patient was treated with a maxillary gold-palladium alloy fixed partial denture (FPD). Shortly after placement, the patient contracted severe contact mucositis. Patch-testing revealed a positive reaction to palladium chloride (PdCl 2 , 1% petrolatum) but not to any other component of the prosthesis. After removal of the FPD and placement of a provisional acrylic resin restoration, all signs and symptoms disappeared. A definitive metal-ceramic (titanium-porcelain) prosthesis was placed, and no signs of lesions appeared. This clinical report demonstrates that titanium may be a satisfactory alt

Second-generation histamine H(1) receptor antagonists were developed to provide efficacious treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR) and chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU) while decreasing adverse effects associated with first-generation agents. When comparing the efficacy and safety profiles of the newest second-generation antihistamines - desloratadine, fexofenadine and levocetirizine - many pharmacological and clinical criteria must be considered. Most importantly, these elements should not be evaluated separately but, rather, as parts of a puzzle that create a whole picture. As a class, second-

Physical trauma, dietary factors, certain toxins, immune mediated disorders, and vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) infection are known causes of stomatitis in horses. There is evidence that some outbreaks of equine stomatitis are caused by as yet unidentified infectious agents. It remains to be determined whether stomatitis is an emerging equine infectious disease, or if the increase in reported cases is simply the result of greater public awareness as a consequence of widespread outbreaks of VSV in the southwestern United States in recent years. Focused laboratory and epidemiological studies a…

This report describes a case of rapidly progressive periodontal tissue breakdown and bone loss in an HIV-infected markedly immunosuppressed homosexual male. Within 6 months of initial presentation with a necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis, the lesion extended to a necrotizing ulcerative stomatitis involving the surrounding periodontium and palatal mucosa. With only partial compliance to local debridement, chlorhexidine oral rinses, and systemic metronidazole therapy, alveolar bone loss resulted in tooth mobility necessitating extraction of 2 involved teeth. This case illustrates the continuum o…

Necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (NUG), necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis (NUP), and necrotizing stomatitis (NS), collectively termed necrotizing gingivostomatitis (NG), represent a dramatic, but rare oral infection associated with diminished systemic resistance, including HIV infection. Over a 5-year period, 68 consecutive NG patients from a population with known HIV status were evaluated and treated. Lesions were staged (modified Pindborg), and clinical findings and predictor variables were compared to 68 random control subjects without NG. Most cases (52%) were stage 1, with necrosis of…
