Prolonged speech and its variants are a group of novel speech patterns that form the basis of a popular treatment for stuttering (Ingham, 1984). It is difficult to determine which features of prolonged speech are necessary for the elimination of stuttered speech because the speech pattern produces simultaneous changes in respiratory, laryngeal, and articulatory activity. Experimental studies have shown that the modification of phonation and of speech rate contributes to stuttering reduction, and increased duration of speech segments and reduced variability of vowel duration are known to occur …

Existing literature suggests that one of the effects of treatment based on prolonged speech is increased durations of acoustic segments. However, the external validity of the data concerned may be questioned because the data were not based on spontaneous speech samples and were gathered from subjects with unknown treatment histories. With this in mind, the present investigation used young clients with no history of treatment based on prolonged speech and obtained pretreatment and posttreatment acoustic measures from spontaneous speech samples. Acoustic measures showed no significant posttreatm

PURPOSE: Women who stutter have historically received limited analytic attention in stuttering research and clinical practice. Although the higher male-to-female persistence ratio partly shapes sample composition, repeated reliance on male-majority samples has also contributed to a sex-skewed evidence base, limiting insight into women's experiences and clinical needs. Using a biopsychosocial framework, this article identifies key domains for inquiry and proposes a research, clinical, and educational agenda to address the underrepresentation of women who stutter and its implications for evidenc…

PROPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the Test of Childhood Stuttering (TOCS).
METHODS & PROCEDURE: The TOCS was translated into Turkish, then back into English by a linguist, and reviewed by an evaluation committee. The translated version was administered to 50 children who stutter (CWS) and 50 who do not (CWNS). After 7-10 days, 12 randomly selected children were re-evaluated. Reliability was assessed using Cronbach's alpha, test-retest methods, and inter-rater reliability. Content validity was confirmed through a pilot study and expert…

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Parents' attitudes and emotions toward stuttering have the potential to impact their reactions to their child's speech. Many parents lack sufficient knowledge about stuttering, which often leads to guilt, uncertainty, and helplessness when their child begins to stutter. However, these experiences may evolve later. This study aimed to explore parents' experiences, as well as their reflections on how these experiences have changed since the onset.
METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 5 parents of individuals who stutter, and 9 other parents chose to complet…

Stuttering is a disorder characterized by transient disruptions in speech motor production. This article is focused on the characteristics of stuttering and the immediate vocal tract mechanisms resulting in stuttered speech disruptions. A range of observations from an initial series of studies on the motor characteristics of stuttering events in adults is presented, combined with a narrative review of published data regarding objective and subjective aspects of instances of stuttering. The aims of the empirical studies were to develop methods for data collection and analysis, as well as collec…

PURPOSE: This scoping review aimed to investigate strategies from peer-reviewed literature for addressing behavioral and experiential variability in neurodiverse conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, anxiety disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, mood disorders, and Tourette syndrome. Specifically, we explored how approaches used with other conditions could be adapted to better account for variability in the assessment and treatment of stuttering.
METHOD: A comprehensive search of Google Scholar, PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, and Web of Science was conducted for studies publi…

INTRODUCTION: Growing anecdotal evidence suggests the feasibility of robotic intervention for people who suffer from disorders related to st … elayed auditory feedback (DAF) for PWS. Moreover, we assessed the relationship between the trait of stuttering and the participants' affinity to the robots.
RESULTS: Eleven PWS participated in the study. Eight (72.7%) participants had fewer stuttering-related psychological symptoms when they communicated with robots than when they communicated with humans. …

BACKGROUND: Differences in core auditory processing abilities, such as sound timing, frequency discrimination, auditory perception, and auditory memory, have been suggested in stutterers, despite the fact that the precise origin of stuttering is not entirely understood. It is suggested that these differences may play a role in the development of stuttering. The aim of our study is to assess the temporal central auditory processing performance in individuals with stuttering and compare it to individuals without stuttering to uncover potential differences stuttering and compare it to individuals…

Stuttering poses challenges to social, occupational, and educational aspects of life. Traditional behavioral therapies can be helpful but effects are often limited. Pharmaceutical treatments have been explored but there are no FDA-approved treatments for stuttering. Interest has grown in the potential use of classic psychedelics, including psilocybin and LSD, which have shown effectiveness in treating disorders with similar symptoms (e.g., anxiety, depression, PTSD). The potential effects of psychedelics on stuttering have not been explored. We conducted a preliminary investigation of self-ide…

PURPOSE: People who stutter often experience significant adverse impact related to stuttering. However, it is unclear how adverse impact develops in children who stutter (CWS) and whether there are protective factors that may mitigate its development. This study examined the relationship between resilience, a potentially protective factor, and stuttering's adverse impact in CWS. Resilience comprises external factors, such as family support and access to resources as well as personal attributes, making it a comprehensive protective factor to explore.
METHOD: One hundred forty-eight CWS aged 5-…

The main objective of this systematic review was to synthesize the evidence on the occurrence and characteristics of stuttering in individuals with Down syndrome and thus contribute knowledge about stuttering in this population. Group studies reporting outcome measures of stuttering were included. Studies with participants who were preselected based on their fluency status were excluded. We searched the Eric, PsychInfo, Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science Core Collection databases on 3rd January 2022 and conducted supplementary searches of the reference lists of previous reviews and the studie…

Stuttering and dyslexia are two processing deficits that have an impact on a person's social and academic lives, especially as they usually affect the pediatric population more than adults. Even though they affect different domains, they have similar characteristics in their pathogenesis, epidemiology, and impact on life. Both disorders represent a considerable percentage of the population worldwide and locally in Saudi Arabia, and they have similar epidemiological trends. Family history, genetic factors, early fetal and neonatal factors, and environmental factors are all identified as risk fa…

Stuttering is a common speech disorder that interrupts speech fluency and tends to cluster in families. Typically, stuttering is characterized by speech sounds, words or syllables which may be repeated or prolonged and speech that may be further interrupted by hesitations or 'blocks'. Rare variants in a small number of genes encoding lysosomal pathway proteins have been linked to stuttering. We studied a large four-generation family in which persistent stuttering was inherited in an autosomal dominant manner with disruption of the cortico-basal-ganglia-thalamo-cortical network found on imaging…

Rhythm perception deficits have been linked to neurodevelopmental disorders affecting speech and language. Children who stutter have shown p … havioral results showed poorer complex rhythm discrimination for AWS than controls. In AWS, greater stuttering severity was associated with poorer rhythm discrimination. AWS showed increased activity within beat-based timing regions and increased functional connectivity between putamen and cerebellum (supporting interval-based timing) for simple rhythms.

PURPOSE: The main aim of this study was to gain insight into whether temperament and/or stuttering severity were associated with anxiety and depression in children who stutter. Additionally, the study also provided an indication into the prevalence of anxiety and depression in children who stutter in a clinical cohort.
METHOD: The participants were 132 English-speaking children (105 boys and 27 girls) between 9;0 and 14;11 years old (M = 11;8, SD = 1;10) and their mothers. At their first visit to a specialist center for children who stutter, mothers and children completed the relevant version…
