To determine the efficacy and safety of subarachnoid butorphanol combined with lidocaine, six calves were studied. Each calf underwent two treatments, at least one week apart, via subarachnoid injection: (1) butorphanol (0.03 mg/kg) plus 2% lidocaine (4 mg/kg) and (2) 2% lidocaine (4 mg/kg) alone. Subarachnoid injections were performed at the lumbosacral space. Analgesia, motor block, sedation, heart rate, arterial blood pressure, respiratory rate, arterial oxygen saturation as measured by pulse oximetry, and rectal temperature were compared before and after subarachnoid administration of drug

The effects of an endothelin ET(A)-receptor selective antagonist, S-0139, were examined using dogs given endothelin-1 (ET-1) into the subarachnoid space. ET-1 at 40 pmol apparently constricted the basilar artery in anesthetized dogs and caused various grades of ataxia, facial clonus, nystagmus and other features in conscious dogs, partially mimicking those which have been reported for conscious rats. S-0139 could completely inhibit both the vasoconstriction and behavioral changes. It could also alleviate the behavioral changes caused by ET-1 in conscious dogs when given after the severe ataxia…

Virchow Robin spaces are normally found pial-lined perivascular spaces traversing from subarachnoid space to the brain parenchyma. Giant dilated Virchow robin spaces (dVRS) are rare. They do not require any surgical intervention unless they are causing symptoms. Here we report a young boy with an incidentally detected giant dVRS in brainstem which was referred for surgery with an initial impression of glioma. Knowledge about such an entity is important to prevent mismanagement.

Subarachnoid neurocysticercosis (SANCC) is caused by an abnormally transformed form of the metacestode or larval form of the tapeworm Taenia solium. In contrast to vesicular parenchymal and ventricular located cysts that contain a viable scolex and are anlage of the adult tapeworm, the subarachnoid cyst proliferates to form aberrant membranous cystic masses within the subarachnoid spaces that cause mass effects and acute and chronic arachnoiditis. How subarachnoid cyst proliferates and interacts with the human host is poorly understood, but parasite stem cells (germinative cells) likely partic…

BACKGROUND: Routes along the olfactory nerves crossing the cribriform plate that extend to lymphatic vessels within the nasal cavity have been identified as a critical cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) outflow pathway. However, it is still unclear how the efflux pathways along the nerves connect to lymphatic vessels or if any functional barriers are present at this site. The aim of this study was to anatomically define the connections between the subarachnoid space and the lymphatic system at the cribriform plate in mice.
METHODS: PEGylated fluorescent microbeads were infused into the CSF space in Pr…

Twenty-one patients were examined with computer tomography following subarachnoid injection of metrizamide (Amipaque). Five were evaluated because of dementia or possible obstructive hydrocephalus. The remainder were referred for lumbar or cervical myelography and served as controls. Concentration and distribution of the contrast medium within the cranial subarachnoid space and ventricular system depend upon a composite of the physical properties of the contrast medium, patient positioning and activity and CSF physiology.

Changes in the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) flow were analyzed in 196 patients with spinal cord tumors of differing localization and histological structure. In 76.5% of the cases there were different variants of CSF flow disorders, namely, complete block in 33.7% and partial block in 42.8% of the cases. The nature of CSF flow disorders depended on the size of tumors, their histological structure and the relationship of the tumor to the cross-section area and the surface of the spinal cord. Yet, in 23.5% of the cases the subarachnoidal space was patent despite marked spinal neurological symptoma

The rat subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) model was further studied to establish the precise time course of the globally reduced CBF that follows and to ascertain whether temporally related changes in cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) and intracranial pressure (ICP) take place. Parallel ultrastructural studies were performed upon cerebral arteries and their adjacent perivascular subarachnoid spaces. SAH was induced by a single intracisternal injection of autologous arterial blood. Serial measurements of regional cortical CBF by hydrogen clearance revealed that experimental SAH resulted in an imme…

OBJECTIVE: Intraoperative MRI with Gd-based contrast agent (GBCA) improves the extent of resection of contrast-enhancing brain tumors. Signal changes of CSF due to perioperative GBCA leakage in the subarachnoid space have been reported. However, although GBCA potentially exhibits neurotoxic effects, so far no associated complications have been described. In this case series, the authors report a single-center cohort of patients with subarachnoid GBCA extravasation after intraoperative MRI and discuss potential neurotoxic complications and potential ways of avoiding them.
METHODS: All patients…

Although damage to the veins of Batson's epidural plexus is usually considered the origin of bleeding in traumatic lumbar puncture, a lesion of these veins would not explain the cases in which postmortem examination shows blood confined to the subdural and subarachnoid spaces. In two patients who had lumbar punctures a few days before death, there was subarachnoid hematoma of the cauda equina at autopsy. In one of these cases, the radicular vessels were shown to be the source of bleeding. Spinal subarachnoid and subdural hemorrhages after lumbar puncture may be due to laceration of radicular v…

1. Prussian blue particles pass rapidly from the surface of the olfactory mucosa and within 2 minutes are found in the tissue spaces, in blood and lymph vessels, in the perineural spaces of the olfactory nerve fibers and in the subarachnoid space and pia-arachnoid membrane. 2. There is great affinity of pigment particles for the olfactory sensory cells. 3. Preliminary treatment of the olfactory mucosa with tannic acid does not alter the speed with which this absorption occurs. It does, however, cause an inflammation of the mucosa and appears to prevent the pigment from entering the olfactory s…

BACKGROUND: Prematurity and enlarged subarachnoid spaces are both hypothesised to represent an increased risk of subdural haemorrhages (SDHs) in infancy, both with and without a history of abuse.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence of a previous haemorrhage, particularly SDHs, in infants born extremely prematurely around term-equivalent age; to examine intra- and inter-observer agreement for identification of haemorrhages; and to examine the width of the subarachnoid spaces.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 121 extremely premature infants had cerebral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) perfo…

BACKGROUND: Decompressive craniectomy (DC) can alleviate increased intracranial pressure in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage patients with concomitant space-occupying intracerebral hemorrhage, but also carries a high risk for complications. We studied outcomes and complications of DC at time of ruptured aneurysm repair.
METHODS: Of 47 patients treated between 2010 and 2020, 30 underwent DC during aneurysm repair and hematoma evacuation and 17 did not. We calculated odds ratios (OR) for delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI), angiographic vasospasm, DCI-related infarction, and unfavorable functiona

BACKGROUND: Post-anesthetic shivering incurs discomfort to patients or even exacerbates their condition. However, no ideal drug has been well established for preventing post-anesthetic shivering. Currently, subarachnoid and epidural dexmedetomidine have demonstrated to have an anti-shivering effect.
METHODS: An electronic search was conducted to identify randomized placebo-controlled trials reporting shivering and then compared subarachnoid and epidural dexmedetomidine with placebo in adults undergoing selective surgery. Data assessment and pooling were analyzed by Review Manager 5.3, STATA 1

Dermoid cysts originate from embryonic tissues trapped in the cranial fusion lines and typically manifest extra-axially. However, intradiploic dermoid cysts are rare among cranial tumors, and their rupture has been sparsely documented. We present a case showcasing a remarkable phenomenon-the spontaneous rupture of an intradiploic dermoid cyst into the subarachnoid space, displaying a distinct "volcano-like" appearance on CT and MRI scans. This case represents the first documented instance of spontaneous intracranial rupture of an intradiploic dermoid cyst into the subarachnoid space. Although …

A 41-year-old woman with a history of birth injury to the brachial plexus suffered several delayed episodes of neurological deterioration. Magnetic resonance imaging studies revealed a syrinx extending from the conus medullaris into the brainstem and rostrally into both internal capsules. She died of an acute exacerbation of chronic respiratory failure. Autopsy demonstrated syringomyelia and syringobulbia with cavity extension bilaterally along the corticospinal tracts into the internal capsules. Islands of glial tissue in the subarachnoid space around the medulla caused obstruction of the sub…
