The brainstem, a small and crucial structure, is connected to the cerebrum, spinal cord, and cerebellum, playing a vital role in regulating autonomic functions, transmitting motor and sensory information, and modulating cognitive processes, emotions, and consciousness. While previous research has indicated that changes in brainstem anatomy can serve as a biomarker for aging and neurodegenerative diseases, the structural changes that occur in the brainstem during normal aging remain unclear. This study aimed to examine the age- and sex-related differences in the global and local structural meas

Tauopathy is a typical feature of Alzheimer's disease of major importance because it strongly correlates with the severity of cognitive defi … le to detect the transgenic Tau protein up to the terminal arborization of RGCs at the level of the superior colliculi, spreading of the transgenic Tau protein to post-synaptic neurons was detected only in aged animals. This suggests that there may be neuron-intrinsic- or microenvironment mediators facilitating this spreading that appear with aging.

The Guiana dolphin (Sotalia guianensis) is a common species along Central and South American coastal waters. Although much effort has been made to understand its behavioral ecology and evolution, very little is known about its brain. The use of ultra-high field MRI in anatomical descriptions of cetacean brains is a very promising approach that is still uncommon. In this study, we present for the first time a full anatomical description of the Guiana dolphin's brain based on high-resolution ultra-high-field magnetic resonance imaging, providing an exceptional level of brain anatomical details,

In mammals, hypothalamic control of food intake involves counterregulation of appetite by an orexigenic peptides such as corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF), and orexigenic peptides such as neuropeptide Y (NPY). Glucocorticoids also stimulate food intake by inhibiting CRF while facilitating NPY actions. To gain a better understanding of the diversity and evolution of neuroendocrine feeding controls in vertebrates, we analysed the effects of CRF, NPY and glucocorticoids on food intake in juvenile Xenopus laevis. We also analysed brain CRF and NPY mRNA content and plasma corticosterone concentr

Neurotrophins are potent regulators of the survival of different neuronal populations in the CNS. Little is known of the immunodistribution of neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) and tyrosine kinase C (TrkC) receptor in the frog visual system, which can successfully regenerate and recover vision after injury. In this study we show that both NT-3 and TrkC are present in the frog retina and tectum, and that their distribution changes after optic nerve transection. Both NT-3 and TrkC are present in the ganglion cell layer, inner nuclear layer, nerve fiber layer and outer plexiform layer, and in Müller cells of

The clawed toad, Xenopus laevis, responds to surface waves with a very accurate orienting reaction towards the source of the wave. The importance of visual experience during larval development for this orienting reaction guided by the lateral line was investigated by testing the responses in postmetamorphic animals deprived of vision from an early larval stage by enucleation or rearing in darkness. Control animals were enucleated after metamorphosis. The results show that the orienting response in animals enucleated as larvae is less accurate; the slope of the regression of the turning angle o

Neurons in the somatic pretectum receive input from the dorsal column nuclei (DCN) and project to a comparable "somatic" portion of the dorsal accessory nucleus of the inferior olive (DAO). This somatic DAO is reciprocally connected with the anterior interpositus nucleus of the cerebellum. One question that arises is whether this circuitry is further controlled by an output specifically from the anterior interpositus nucleus to the somatic pretectum. Wheatgerm agglutinin conjugated to horseradish peroxidase was injected into various parts of the cat pretectum. Injection sites were interpreted

In the normal goldfish, neighboring retinal ganglion cells terminate in one small tectal locus to produce the precise retinotopy characteristic of this projection. This can be directly demonstrated by labeling neighboring ganglion cells with small "spot" injections of WGA-HRP, which yield a single small patch of product at the retinotopically appropriate part of the tectum. When the optic nerve is crushed, label from these spot injections was previously found to be widely dispersed during the early phase of regeneration. With time, label subsequently condensed, typically into several discrete

Excitatory synaptic transmission, induced by electrical stimulation of optic nerve fibres on relay neurones, was recorded from in vitro preparations of the optic tectum of the frog. Bath-applied glutamate (the putative excitatory transmitter of the optic nerve) produced transient enhancement of tectal field potentials, followed by a depression, presumably caused by sustained neuronal depolarization. Pentobarbitone potently antagonized the depressant effect of glutamate, producing an approximate 50% reduction in the response of the tectum to glutamate at 25 microM. Midazolam also decreased the

A monoclonal antibody (Ab8) to choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) was used to locate structures showing ChAT-like immunoreactivity (ChAT-IR) in the brain of a teleost fish, the midshipman (Porichthys notatus). ChAT is the synthetic enzyme for acetylcholine found in neurons using that neurotransmitter; thus ChAT-IR may be interpreted as indicating putative cholinergic activity. Robust staining is seen in all cranial nerve motor nuclei. In addition, the brainstem of Porichthys is distinguished by two other expansive ChAT-IR zones: a sonic motor nucleus, which innervates swimbladder "drum" muscles,

Single cell responses to electrical stimuli applied to the optic chiasm and to the lateral geniculate nucleus were studied in expanded projection to the ipsilateral superior colliculus of neonatally enucleated and congenitally monocular rats. In both types of rats latencies to the afferent volleys were longer, and the latency correlation between the optic chiasm and the lateral geniculate responses was lower in the ipsilateral than in the contralateral superior colliculus cells. This was interpreted to suggest abnormal convergence of retinal axons with different conduction velocities in the ip

The retinofugal projections of albino rats made micrencephalic by prenatal exposure to the cytotoxic teratogen methylazoxymethanol acetate (MAM Ac) have been examined. The only abnormality noted was an increased projection to the lateral posterior nucleus of the thalamus in rats exposed to MAM Ac on embryonic day 15. The relatively normal retinofugal projections were surprising in view of the extensive damage induced by prenatal exposure to this drug.

Many parts of the visual system contain topographic maps of the visual field. In such structures, the binocular portion of the visual field is generally represented by overlapping, matching projections relayed from the two eyes. One of the developmental factors which helps to bring the maps from the two eyes into register is visual input. The role of visual input is especially dramatic in the frog, Xenopus laevis. In tadpoles of this species, the eyes initially face laterally and have essentially no binocular overlap. At metamorphosis, the eyes begin to move rostrodorsally; eventually, their v

Explants or dissociated neurons of spinal cord and other parts from chick embryos and rat fetuses were cultured for 1-4 days. Extensive outgrowth of neurites from the spinal cord was observed in the medium which had been conditioned by skeletal and heart muscle cells. In the fresh medium, the neurites were short and accompanied by the migrating non-neuronal cells. The conditioned medium promoted also the neurite outgrowth from retina, optic tectum, ciliary ganglion, superior cervical ganglion and dorsal root ganglion.

The round of stationary obstacles demanding localizing and definition of objects, was restored within 12--17 days after cutting of both optic nerves in Rana temporaria. Electrophysiological data indicated the restoration of connection between the retina and rostral thalamic nuclei by this time. The on-type impulse reactions to light stimuli in retinal ganglionic cell endings were observed. Retino-tectal connections were still disrupted. The role of retino-diencephalic projections in organization of the frog visually guided behaviour, is discussed.

Following transplantation of an additional optic primordium into the orbital mesenchyme of chick embryos of approximately 2 days of incubation age, the changes in cell number in the ciliary ganglion, accessory oculomotor and trochlear nuclei were studied at various stages of development. Cell counts were made at 1-day intervals from days 9 through 15 for ciliary ganglion, and from days 13 through 15 for the accessory oculomotor and trochlear nuclei. Cell counts for the ciliary ganglion on days 9 and 11 were similar on the operated and control sides which suggests that grafting of an additional
