BACKGROUND: Dysphagia is a common symptom reported by patients in various medical fields, raising the question of diagnosis. In addition to otorhinolaryngologic examination with a mirror, the current gold standards videofluoroscopy and fiber optic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) are available. Ultrasound is frequently used in everyday clinical practice, although its application for swallowing diagnostics needs addressing.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between April 2012 and February 2014, 81 subjects (age 19-66 years) with no indication of a swallowing disorder were sonographically examin

LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 4 (Case Series).
OBJECTIVE: Dysphagia is a debilitating condition that is associated with many etiologies. It can have a devastating effect on a patient's quality of life with long-term sequelae that make it a source of medical malpractice litigation. This study analyzed medical malpractice cases involving dysphagia and looked for factors determining legal liability.
METHODS: The Westlaw Next legal database (Thomson Reuters, New York, NY) was searched for relevant malpractice cases and assessed for several factors including if the dysphagia was iatrogenic, the amount

INTRODUCTION: Slide tracheoplasty is now considered gold standard treatment for long segment congenital tracheal stenosis. Outcomes are typically focused upon airway patency. Dysphagia is often reported in children undergoing cardiothoracic surgery, but not specifically after slide tracheoplasty. This study was carried out to describe the nature and prevalence of dysphagia following slide tracheoplasty for long segment congenital tracheal stenosis.
METHODS: Retrospective case note review was conducted on a series of patients who underwent swallow evaluation following slide tracheoplasty betwe

BACKGROUND: Computational analysis of swallowing mechanics (CASM) is a method that utilizes multivariate shape change analysis to uncover covariant elements of pharyngeal swallowing mechanics associated with impairment using videofluoroscopic swallowing studies. The goals of this preliminary study were to (1) characterize swallowing mechanics underlying stroke-related dysphagia, (2) decipher the impact of left and right hemispheric strokes on pharyngeal swallowing mechanics, and (3) determine pharyngeal swallowing mechanics associated with penetration-aspiration status.
METHODS: Videofluorosc

We study whether the red nucleus is involved in control of swallowing. The swallowing reflex was induced in anesthetized rats by repetitive electrical stimulation of the superior laryngeal nerve. The electromyographic activities of the mylohyoid and thyrohyoid muscles were recorded in order to identify the swallowing reflex. Repetitive electrical stimulation applied to the red nucleus reduced the number of swallows. The onset latency of the first swallow was increased during repetitive electrical stimulation applied to the magnocellular part of the red nucleus. Microinjection of monosodium glu

BACKGROUND: Although FEES has been established as a valid procedure in instrumental evaluation of swallowing even in young children, the significance of the endoscopic method on infants has not yet been fully clarified. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate fiberoptic endoscopic examination of swallowing in infants by focusing on its feasibility and limits.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 11/2011 to 3/2015 27 infants from a neuropediatric hospital presented for fiberoptic endoscopic examination of swallowing. Compared with Langmore standard FEES was carried out in a modified algorithm.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary ataxias are a heterogeneous group of disorders resulting in progressive inco-ordination. Swallowing impairment, also known as dysphagia, is a common and potentially life threatening sequel of disease progression. The incidence and nature of dysphagia in these conditions is largely unknown. The loss of an effective and safe swallow can dramatically affect the health and well-being of an individual. Remediation of difficulties of eating and drinking is an important goal in the clinical care of people with hereditary ataxia.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of interventio

The majority of swallowed foreign bodies are thrown spontaneously without causing complications in the digestive system. Multiple number of foreign bodies may be swallowed by psychiatric patients which delay diagnosis and increase the complication rate. Long and hard objects cannot pass through the pylorus, and may cause obstruction, ulceration, bleeding and perforation. Endoscopy is used as an effective method in such cases. An exploratory laparatomy was performed after unsuccessful endoscopic foreign object removal in a 28-year-old schizophrenic patient with gastric outlet obstruction due to

BACKGROUND: Esophageal involvement by Chagas' disease causes a significative decrease in the number of neurons of the esophageal myenteric plexus, causing an impairment of esophageal motility with the same alterations described in primary esophageal achalasia. There is also a longer duration of pharyngeal transit, which might be consequent of the involvement of the central control of swallowing by the disease, or an adaptation of the pharynx to the difficult bolus transit through the esophagus, which could contribute to the complaint of dysphagia.
METHODS: We studied, by videofluoroscopy, the

Protection of the airway during swallow is often compromised following stroke and other neurological diseases. If a patient fails to recover airway protection with standard therapy, they are often left with few if any options to avoid repeated pneumonia resulting from aspiration. For them, the only option is no food by mouth and a PEG-tube for nutrition. Functional electrical stimulation offers possible solutions for restoring airway protection. Here we report the capabilities of transtracheal stimulation for vocal fold closure and selective stimulation of the XII cranial nerve to produce elev

PURPOSE: We determined whether swallowing has an effect on the degree of urinary urgency and on the amplitude of detrusor contraction during filling cystometry in patients with detrusor overactivity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Included in study were 20 consecutive patients with detrusor overactivity. During urodynamics the mean peak pressure of each contraction was documented and compared. At the beginning of wave 2 patients were asked to perform 5 repetitive swallows. After each wave patients were asked to grade the severity of urgency on a visual analog scale.
RESULTS: The mean ± SD peak of th

Swallowing is a complex neurogenic sensorimotor process involving all levels of the neuraxis and a vast number of muscles and anatomic structures. Disruption of any of these anatomic or functional components can lead to swallowing disorders (also known as dysphagia). Understanding the neural pathways that govern swallowing is necessary in diagnosing and treating patients with dysphagia. Functional MRI (fMRI) is a prevalent and effective neuroimaging method that has been used to study the complex neurophysiologic control of swallowing in vivo. This article presents a summary of the research stu

CP bar is an uncommon but important cause of dysphagia in elderly people. A CP bar is often undetected during upper endoscopy and might be missed with barium radiography if adequate attention is not focused on the hypopharynx. In suspected cases, evaluation for alternative etiologies of dysphagia is important because the CP bar might be an incidental finding. Secondary causes of CP dysfunction resulting from underlying primary myopathic or neuropathic disorders should be considered before therapy. The effectiveness of dilation and surgical myotomy in alleviating dysphagia associated with CP ba

The detection of swallowing events by acoustic means represents an important tool to assess and diagnose swallowing disorders as well as to objectively monitor ingestive behavior of individuals. Acoustic sensors used to register swallowing sounds may also capture sound artifacts arising from intrinsic speech and external noise affecting the detection. In this paper we tested if subsonic frequencies are less prone to artifacts from speech, chewing and other intrinsic sounds than sonic frequencies. A simple method using a throat and an ambient microphone was employed to compare the swallowing de
