A cognitive model of menopausal hot flushes and night sweats.

Hot flushes and night sweats (HF/NS) are commonly experienced by mid-aged women during the menopause transition. They affect approximately 70% of women but are regarded as problematic for 15-20% largely due to physical discomfort, distress, social embarrassment, and sleep disturbance. There is a need for effective and acceptable nonmedical treatments for menopausal symptoms due to the declining use of hormone therapy (HT) following publication of the Women's Health Initiative and other prospective studies which associated HT use with increased risk of stroke and breast cancer. HF/NS are an exa…

Effect of oxybutynin on exercise-induced sweating in healthy individuals.

OBJECTIVES: Oxybutynin has been proven to be effective in patients with generalized hyperhidrosis. Some dermatoses aggravate as a result of sweating. Therefore, oxybutynin might also be useful in such normohidrotic patients. The aim was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of different doses of oxybutynin on exercise-induced sweating in healthy individuals. METHODS: Two randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over studies were performed, in which two different dosages (2.5 and 5 mg) of oxybutynin were tested. The degree of sweating was determined by transepidermal water loss (TEWL)…

Mixed apocrine sweat gland tumor of the tail in a cow.

A 4-year-old native-breed cow had a mass with wide areas of ulceration and hemorrhage at the base of the tail at the same level as the vulva. The tumor was 19 X 13 X 11 cm, appeared red-brown, and was firm to hard, with gritty areas apparent on cut surface. Histologically, the tumor mass was composed of multilayered epithelial cells forming glandular structures with occasional apical blebs and rare solidly packed cells in nests. The stroma included fibrous connective tissue, scattered or periglandular sheets of spindle-shaped cells resembling myoepithelium, several cartilaginous formations, an

A sweat-gland tumor metastasizing to the axilla: report of a case.

Sclerosing sweat-duct carcinoma is a rare malignancy of the skin. We herein present the case of a 68-year-old Japanese man who developed sclerosing sweat-duct carcinoma 2 years after undergoing local excision of a primary tumor in his right arm. Firm nodules appeared in the right axilla, which were revealed by surgical resection to be metastases. This rare tumor grows slowly but usually metastasizes to the regional lymph nodes, whereupon they are often associated with a poor prognosis. As the effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiotherapy against this neoplasm remains unclear, we recommend tha…

Blood, sweat, and tears. Toward a rehabilitation of the INADEQUATE experiment.

The double-quantum-filtered carbon-carbon correlation experiment (INADEQUATE) can be accelerated significantly through a reduction in the spin-lattice relaxation times by dissolving oxygen gas in the solution. The effect is enhanced by lowering the temperature and by pressurizing the sample tube with oxygen. This offers a fourfold reduction in the relaxation times of the carbon-13 resonances in the 125-MHz spectrum of methyl salicylate. The addition of perfluorotertiarybutanol (related to the artificial blood substitutes) increases the amount of oxygen that can be dissolved, so that without ox

Calcium homeostasis influences epidermal sweating in patients with vitiligo.

Patients with vitiligo have a decreased sweating response in both their lesional and non-lesional skin (n = 17) compared with healthy age- and sex-matched controls (n = 22) after stimulation with the acetylcholine agonist pilocarpine. The decreased cholinergic response of the dermal sweat glands in this patient group correlates with a significantly lower calcium concentration in sweat compared with controls. In addition, a significantly higher potassium concentration was found in the pigmented skin of these patients. The other fast exchange ions sodium and chloride are unaffected. In vitiligo,…

Gustatory facial sweating subsequent to upper thoracic sympathectomy.

Gustatory facial sweating has been described as a consequence of upper thoracic sympathectomy. Patients may also develop compensatory hyperhidrosis, sensory deficits, nipple hypersensitivity, and Horner's syndrome. In this article, we have reviewed three patients with reflex sympathetic dystrophy who developed gustatory facial sweating subsequent to endoscopic T2 and T3 ganglionectomy. This article also discusses the possible mechanisms of gustatory facial sweating.

The application of saliva, sweat and tear fluid for diagnostic purposes.

Despite anatomical and biochemical similarities, salivary, sweat and lacrimal glandulas differ in their physiological functions. Salivary and tear fluid are required for the proper function of the epithelial layer from which they are secreted. The physiological function of sweat is the elimination of excess heat. The products of the three glandulas can be used to measure indicators either of glandula or of non-glandular diseases. In the latter case the indicator must be transported from the particular organ to the glandula where it is then secreted. In sweat, only one example has reached well …

Reflex sweating in patients with spinal cord injury: a review.

Sweat glands derive their innervation from the sympathetic nervous system. The spinal sympathetic structures that are located in the intermediolateral areas extend from T1-L2 segments and are under the control of hypothalamic centers. Cord transection abolishes the supraspinal control of sudorimotor function. Since sympathetic innervation does not follow a clear segmental distribution, normal sweating may be preserved at a higher or lower level than skin sensation. Nonthermoregulatory reflex sweating is an indication of unchecked spinal cord facilitation and is precipitated by afferent stimuli…

Effect of isolated head heating and cooling on sweating in man.

A double climate chamber which permitted the independent regulation of temperature in each chamber was used to produce isolated head heating and cooling in three subjects. Deep body temperature was recorded from the tympanic membrane, oral cavity, esophagus, and rectum. Skin temperature was measured on nine body regions and a weighted mean skin temperature was calculated. Sweating rate was measured by resistance hygrometry from six regions. When head skin temperature was increased, deep body temperature measured at the tympanic membrane and oral cavity increased more than esophageal temperatur…

Sweat function in babies with defects of the central nervous system.

Sweat function has been studied as part of the full neurological examination of 50 full-term infants with malformation of the central nervous system. 26 of the children were less than 1 month old at the time of examination, and a further 10 were less than 3 months old. In those infants in whom the response to thermal stimulation was equivocal, the local response to 20 μg intradermal acetylcholine was also studied. Sweat function was normal above the level of the spinal lesion in all of the 24 infants with a lumbar meningomyelocele, but there was virtually no response to thermal or chemical sti…

Association of primary focal hyperhidrosis with anxiety induced by sweating: A cross-sectional study of Japanese university students focusing on the severity of hyperhidrosis and site of sweating.

Hyperhidrosis significantly reduces patients' quality of life, with many reporting feeling highly anxious. However, the relationship between hyperhidrosis and anxiety induced by sweating has not been examined in detail. The current study examined the relationship between: (1) the presence of hyperhidrosis symptoms, (2) hyperhidrosis severity, and (3) the sites of the most sweating and anxiety induced by sweating. A cross-sectional web-based survey was conducted among university students, and 1080 consenting participants (600 males and 480 females; mean age, 18.8 years) were included in the ana…

Two cases of sweat gland carcinoma with neurosecretory differentiation: A report.

Hidradenocarcinoma (HC) is an extremely rare malignant tumor originating from skin appendages, accounting for approximately 6% of malignant sweat gland tumors and less than 0.001% of all tumors. Sweat gland carcinoma with endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma belongs to the category of low-grade cutaneous neuroendocrine carcinoma. Due to its extremely low incidence, lack of distinct clinical manifestations, and multiple pathological features, the clinicopathological diagnosis is challenging, often leading to misdiagnosis. To date, fewer than 20 cases have been reported in the literat…

Wearable and flexible biomimetic microfluidic sensors for rapid sweat biomarker detection.

Wearable sweat colorimetric sensors demonstrate significant potential for continuous, real-time, and non-invasive health monitoring. Inspired by the Nepenthes alata plant, this study developed bio-inspired microfluidic channels with unique two-dimensional duck tongue-like structures using laser processing. The biomimetic channels demonstrated 51 % enhancement in liquid collection efficiency compared to conventional designs, along with superior transport performance across different buffer solutions. By integrating microfluidic technology with colorimetric detection, we developed a smartphone-b…

Hydrogel-based sweat chloride sensor with high sensitivity and low hysteresis.

Monitoring chloride ions (Cl-) in sweat is critical for assessing hydration, diagnosing cystic fibrosis (CF), and evaluating other health conditions. Existing wearable sweat chloride sensors either exhibit low sensitivity based on potentiometric sensing or irreversible readings based on colorimetric sensing. To address these challenges, we report the design of a hydrogel-based wearable sweat sensor that allows for monitoring of Cl- based on an electrolyte concentration gradient. This reported sensor features a coplanar design with a cation-selective hydrogel (CH), a high-salinity hydrogel (HH)…
