Piloting a portable pool-based survival swim programme in Kerala, India.

BACKGROUND: Drowning among school-aged children remains a burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Survival swim training is a WHO-recommended intervention that enables children to survive water-related mishaps. The project piloted the SwimSafe programme in two schools in the high-burden state of Kerala, India, and assessed for feasibility of implementation in this context. METHODS: Children aged 5-12 years with no swimming ability were enrolled in 12 sessions which taught float and swim skills in portable pools. Quantitative performance was assessed at baseline and endline against

Behind the scenes of deaths of swimming adults in the water: sudden cardiac deaths.

BACKGROUND: Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a major global public health concern. However, the complex interplay between cardiac pathologies and drowning-related deaths remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the physiological and pathological mechanisms underlying sudden aquatic deaths by evaluating the cardiovascular effects of swimming. METHODS: An extensive dataset was analyzed, including demographic features, death circumstances, detailed autopsy findings, especially macroscopic and microscopic cardiac evaluations, and final causes of death from 222 of the 5267 cases examined

Optimization of swim depth across diverse taxa during horizontal travel.

Semiaquatic taxa, including humans, often swim at the air-water interface where they waste energy generating surface waves. For fully marine animals however, theory predicts the most cost-efficient depth-use pattern for migrating, air-breathing species that do not feed in transit is to travel at around 2 to 3 times the depth of their body diameter, to minimize the vertical distance traveled while avoiding wave drag close to the surface. This has rarely been examined, however, due to depth measurement resolution issues at the surface. Here, we present evidence for the use of this strategy in th

Static Stability and Swim Bladder Volume in the Bluegill Sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus).

Static stability is a property inherent to every organism. More stable bodies benefit from a lower energy cost associated with maintaining a desired orientation, while less stable bodies can be more maneuverable. The static stability of a fish is determined by the relative locations of its center of mass (COM) and center of buoyancy (COB), which may change with changes in swim bladder volume. We hypothesized, however, that fish would benefit from consistent static stability, and predicted that changes in swim bladder volume would not alter the overall pattern of COM and COB locations. We used

Influence of Swimming Program on the Blood Pressure of Pregnant Hypertensive Rats and Their Fetuses.

The hypertension incidence and its complication on pregnant women are growing and can lead to adverse consequences on their fetuses. However, it is known that regular exercise practice can be healthful to hypertensive pregnant women but harmful to fetal growth. So, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of exercise beginning before pregnancy or during pregnancy on the maternal blood pressure and reproductive outcome and on the fetal development of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Pregnant SHR were randomly distributed into three experimental groups: (1) SHR-Control, non-

Antidepressant-like effects of kynurenic acid in a modified forced swim test.

BACKGROUND: Kynurenic acid (KYNA) is an L-tryptophan metabolite with neuromodulatory activities, regulating the release of neurotransmitters such as glutamate, dopamine (DA), and acetylcholine (Ach). Dysregulation of the kynurenine pathway has been associated with neurodegenerative, neurological, and psychological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, major depressive disorder, and schizophrenia. METHODS: The antidepressant-like effects of KYNA were studied with a modified mouse forced swimming test (FST), and the potential involvement of the seroto

Swimming modifies the effect of noise stress on the HPG axis of male rats.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the effect of noise pollution on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. In this study, the effects of noise pollution and swimming on the HPG hormone axis of male rats were investigated. METHODS: Forty male Sprague Dawley rats were assigned to four groups of equal size, including control (C), swimming (S), noise (N), and noise with swimming (NS). Serum levels of GnRH, LH, FSH, and testosterone were measured through blood samples taken 48 h following the last session of treatment. The main treatment programs of voluntary swimming and noise stress w

Posterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries Associated With Military Survival Swim Training.

OBJECTIVES: Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injuries are relatively common injuries associated with athletic activities and high-energy trauma. Posterolateral corner (PLC) injuries frequently accompany injury to the PCL. Diagnosis can be challenging and requires a comprehensive history and physical examination. Patients frequently report vague, nonspecific symptoms and the mechanism of injury is often useful in localizing injured structures. Two of the more common mechanisms for PCL injury include a direct blow to the proximal anterior tibia with the knee flexed, as well as a significant kne

Behavioral benefits of maternal swimming are counteracted by neonatal hypoxia-ischemia in the offspring.

Hypoxia-ischemia (HI) represents one of the most common causes of neonatal encephalopathy. The central nervous system injury comprises several mechanisms, including inflammatory, excitotoxicity, and redox homeostasis unbalance leading to cell death and cognitive impairment. Exercise during pregnancy is a potential therapeutic tool due to benefits offered to mother and fetus. Swimming during pregnancy elicits a strong metabolic programming in the offspring's brain, evidenced by increased antioxidant enzymes, mitochondrial biogenesis, and neurogenesis. This article aims to evaluate whether the b

Identification of disinfection by-products in freshwater and seawater swimming pools and evaluation of genotoxicity.

Exposure to disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in swimming pools has been linked to adverse health effects. Numerous DBPs that occur in swimming pools are genotoxic and carcinogenic. This toxicity is of a greater concern in the case of brominated DBPs that have been shown to have substantially greater toxicities than their chlorinated analogs. In chlorinated seawater swimming pools, brominated DBPs are formed due to the high content of bromide. Nevertheless, very little data is reported about DBP occurrence and mutagenicity of water in these pools. In the present study, three seawater and one fres

Effects of Swimming and Cycling Exercise Intervention on Vascular Function in Patients With Osteoarthritis.

Swimming exercise is an ideal and excellent form of exercise for patients with osteoarthritis (OA). However, there is no scientific evidence that regular swimming reduces vascular dysfunction and inflammation and elicits similar benefits compared with land-based exercises such as cycling in terms of reducing vascular dysfunction and inflammation in patients with OA. Forty-eight middle-aged and older patients with OA were randomly assigned to swimming or cycling training groups. Cycling training was included as a non-weight-bearing land-based comparison group. After 12 weeks of supervised exerc

Behavioral effects of glucocorticoids during the first exposures to the forced swim stress.

RATIONALE: Glucocorticoids facilitate coping with stress, but their high levels have been also implicated in mood disorders. Due to this duality, the role of glucocorticoid signaling in the development of the first episodes of stress-induced depression remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: To address this issue, effects of the glucocorticoid signal modulation on depressive-like behavior during pretest and test Porsolt swim sessions were examined. METHODS: Metyrapone (MET; 150 mg/kg, i.p.) was injected 3 h before pretest to block stress-induced increase in corticosterone levels. Dexamethasone (DEX; 0.

Swim pacemaker response to bath applied neurotransmitters in the cubozoan Tripedalia cystophora.

The four rhopalia of cubomedusae are integrated parts of the central nervous system carrying their many eyes and thought to be the centres of visual information processing. Rhopalial pacemakers control locomotion through a complex neural signal transmitted to the ring nerve and the signal frequency is modulated by the visual input. Since electrical synapses have never been found in the cubozoan nervous system all signals are thought to be transmitted across chemical synapses, and so far information about the neurotransmitters involved are based on immunocytochemical or behavioural data. Here w

A statewide outbreak of Cryptosporidium and its association with the distribution of public swimming pools.

In order to characterize the association between county-level risk factors and the incidence of Cryptosporidium in the 2007 Iowa outbreak, we used generalized linear mixed models with the number of Cryptosporidium cases per county as the dependent variable. We employed a spatial power covariance structure, which assumed that the correlation between the numbers of cases in any two counties decreases as the distance between them increases. County population size was included in the model to adjust for population differences. Independent variables included the number of pools in specific pool cat

"Swimming worms in a bare cistern": a sign for moyamoya disease. A case report.

Moyamoya disease is a rare cerebrovascular occlusive disorder most often found among the Japanese. It is angiographically defined as a progressive steno-occlusion of the bilateral internal carotid arteries with characteristic abnormal vascular networks, so-called Moyamoya vessels, at the base of the brain. MRI is the initial investigation of choice and we describe an MRI sign to diagnose Moyamoya disease warranting digital subtraction angiography.

The contribution of the pleural type 12 interneuron to swim acceleration in Clione limacina.

The pteropod mollusc, Clione limacina, swims by alternate dorsal-ventral flapping movements of its wing-like parapodia. The basic swim rhythm is produced by a network of pedal swim interneurons that comprise a swim central pattern generator (CPG). Serotonergic modulation of both intrinsic cellular properties of the swim interneurons and network properties contribute to swim acceleration, the latter including recruitment of type 12 interneurons into the CPG. Here we address the role of the type 12 interneurons in swim acceleration. A single type 12 interneuron is found in each of the pleural ga

Effects of systolic overload and swim training on cardiac mechanics and biochemistry in rats.

We have previously shown that swim conditioning corrects the depressed mechanical function and myosin adenosinetriphosphatase (ATPase) activities associated with renovascular hypertension (HTN) in the rat. The present study was designed to assess the effects of swim conditioning on another form of systolic overload, subdiaphragmatic suprarenal aortic stenosis. Cardiac mechanics in an isolated working heart apparatus and myosin enzymology were studied in four groups of rats: controls (C), animals with chronic systolic overload secondary to aortic constriction (St), swim-conditioning animals (Sw
