Meige's syndrome is a form of cranial dystonia characterized by the presence of bilateral dystonic spasms of the facial muscles and frequently of other cranial muscles as well. Its most common and disabling manifestation is blepharospasm which can render the patient functionally blind. Several types of orbicularis oculi spasms occur in Meige's syndrome: brief clonic spasms, prolonged dystonic spasms, constant tonic contraction, and "apraxia" of lid opening. In the completed form of the syndrome, blepharospasm is typically associated with lower facial or oromandibular dystonia. Spasms of the ne…

In the last years the Kearns-Sayre-Syndrome has been defined with the typical trias of chronic external ophthalmoplegia, pigmentary retinal dystrophy and cardiac conduction defects. Today it is no longer believed to present an entity but a variant of the multiple plussymptoms of the ophthalmoplegia-plus group. In pediatrics the existence of this clinical disorder is not yet well acknowledged. The case of a 16-year-old patient is used as an example for the impressive clinical symptoms and the involvement of several organs in this clinical disorder. The combination with a Klinefelter-Syndrome ha…

Peripheral nerve complications occurred in four patients with toxic shock syndrome. Each patient had an acute carpal tunnel syndrome develop that was verified by nerve conduction studies. Recovery was rapid in two cases, but delayed in two others. Decompressive procedures were required in only one patient, with eventual recovery. Another condition, the toxic shock syndrome, must now be added to the long list of possible causes of compression of the median nerve in the wrist.

Gorlin's syndrome is a condition inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion. It involves many organs, but principally affects the skin, skeleton, and endocrine and nervous systems. The most common features are multiple nervi and basal cell carcinomas of the skin, benign jaw cysts, dyskeratotic pits in the palms and soles, rib and vertebral abnormalities, brachymetacarpalism, and calcification of the falx cerebri. In 14 patients, 4 of whom belonged to one family, the age at the time of diagnosis ranged from 11 to 63 years. Ten patients are alive, but five are severely disfigured by carcinomas. …

Mohr's syndrome consists of an association of three types of malformation : oral, facial, and digital. It is very similar, therefore, to the syndrome of Papillon-Léage and Psaume. Apart from this, precise, constant characteristics can be recognized which identify it as a separate entity. Firstly, the genetic mode of transmission differs. Secondly, clinical signs are dominated by the frequency and severity of the distal lesions, such that bilateral syndactyly of the big toe is a key element in the differential diagnosis.

The combination of juvenile diabetes mellitus, optic atrophy, perceptive hearing loss, diabetes insipidus and atonia of the urinary tract and bladder seems to constitute a distinct syndrome. In certain cases delayed puberty is also mentioned but this has not been considered as part of the syndrome.
