Individuals with high trait anxiety form a non-clinical group with a predisposition for an anxiety-related bias in emotional and cognitive processing that is considered by some to be a prerequisite for psychiatric disorders. Anxious individuals tend to experience more worry under uncertainty, and processing uncertain information is an important, but often overlooked factor in anxiety. So, we decided to explore the brain correlates of processing uncertain information in individuals with high trait anxiety using the learn-test paradigm. Behaviorally, the percentages on memory test and the likeli

Anxiety disorders form one the most common type of mental illness and comprises of separation anxiety, specific phobias, social anxiety disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder. These disorders offer considerable comorbidity with other mental disorders like depression, memory and learning deficit which all shows considerable seasonal variance. Seasonal changes have major impact on health of individuals' especially mental health. N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) is an acetylated derivative of cysteine, and is considered as an antioxidant precursor to glutathione. It has been shown to ameliorate various

INTRODUCTION: Mental health symptoms and substance use increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, and women may be disproportionately affected. Women report substantial mental health consequences, and women veterans may experience additional risks associated with military service. However, rates and correlates of substance use and consequences among women veterans are largely unknown. This study aimed to 1) report rates of substance use and consequences among women veterans; 2) identify correlates of substance use and consequences; and 3) test COVID-specific anxiety as a moderator.
METHOD: Women

Introduction The relationship between the level of anxiety and depression among coronary artery disease (CAD) patients and coronary angiographic findings is ambiguously mentioned in studies. Past evidence shows that the relationship between anxiety and depression with coronary artery disease can be bidirectional. There is a paucity of literature on the association of levels of anxiety and depression with the number of coronary arteries involved in coronary artery disease. Methods This study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital to find the level of anxiety and depression in patients underg

Postpartum depression (PPD) is another type of depression, including emotional fluctuation, fatigue, and anxiety. Based on the specific event like giving birth, it can be speculated that PPD might have its specific mechanism. Here, we confirmed that dexamethasone (DEX) administration during pregnancy (gestational days 16-18) induced depressive- and anxiety-like behaviors in dam (DEX-dam) after weaning period (3 weeks). DEX-dam showed anxiety-like behaviors in open-field test (OFT) and light-dark test (LD). In addition, DEX-dam exhibited depressive-like behaviors with the increased immobility t

Changes in 5-HT1A receptor-mediated neurotransmission at the level of the median raphe nucleus (MRN) are reported to affect the expression of defensive responses that are associated with generalized anxiety disorder (e.g. inhibitory avoidance) but not with panic (e.g. escape). The objective of this study was to further explore the involvement of MRN 5-HT1A receptors in the regulation of generalized anxiety-related behaviours. Results of experiment 1 showed that intra-MRN injection of the 5-HT1A/7 receptor agonist 8-OH-DPAT (0.6 nmol) in male Wistar rats impaired the acquisition of inhibitory a

Anxiety and depressive disorders are among the most common psychiatric disorders with a high number of hospital admissions and a lifetime prevalence of up to 25%. So far, the pathophysiological mechanisms for anxiety disorders remain to be found. Preclinical studies suggest that changes in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) system function are causally related to the expression of anxiety-related behavior. The findings on HPA system function in patients with anxiety disorders are, however, heterogeneous. Both hypo- and hyperresponsiveness of HPA response in various anxiety disorders u

Exposure to maternal separation (MS) during early life is an identified risk factor for emotional disorders such as anxiety and depression later in life. This study investigated the effects of neonatal MS on the behavior and long-term potentiation (LTP) as well as basic synaptic transmission at hippocampal CA3-CA1 and mossy fiber (MF)-CA3 synapses in adolescent mice for 19days. When mice were adolescents, we measured depression, learning, memory, anxious and aggressive behavior using the forced swimming test (FST), Y-maze, Morris water maze (MWM), elevated plus maze (EPM), three consecutive da

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and depression affect epileptic patients much more often than individuals from the general population. We were interested in whether corneal kindling in rats, which is a model of complex partial seizures with secondary generalization, would influence animal behavior in models of anxiety and depression.
METHODS: Kindling was achieved by transcorneal electric stimulation and fully kindled rats were used in this study. Kindled and sham-stimulated rats were subjected to the elevated plus maze and forced swim test which are believed to be predictive models for anxiety and depre

A comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) aggravates symptoms, course of illness and social functioning of persons with borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, it is largely unclear how this effect is mediated. In 60 women with BPD of whom 23 had a comorbid current PTSD we investigated whether dysfunctional explicit and implicit emotions were associated with a comorbid PTSD. Shame and guilt proneness, anxiety, anger-hostility, and general psychopathology were assessed by self-report measures. Implicit anxiety-related self-concept was measured using the Implicit Association Test.

Anxiety disorder risk is influenced by both adverse environmental factors and genetic background. We previously described high-avoidance animal (HAA) and low-avoidance animal (LAA) strains of male Hatano rats that may provide robust models for assessing interactions between genetic background and environment driving anxiety disorder pathogenesis. We examined the potential of environmental enrichment (EE), a non-pharmacological approach, to suppress trait anxiety disorders by comparing anxiety-related behaviors and physiological metrics between HAA and LAA lines exposed to EE or standard housin

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive individuals with higher heart rates and anxiety have greater cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Despite the correlation between hypertension, heart rate, and anxiety, scant attention has been paid to the effect of hypertension drug therapy on behavioral outcomes in cardiovascular disease. Ivabradine, an inhibitor of hyperpolarization-activated, cyclic nucleotide-gated funny channels (HCNs), has been used clinically to reduce heart rates and has been shown to improve quality of life in patients with angina and heart failure. We postulated that in addition to loweri
