Panic disorder in a breath-holding challenge test: a simple tool for a better diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to observe if anxiety disorder patients - DSM-IV - respond in a similar way to the induction of panic attacks by a breath-holding challenge test. METHOD: We randomly selected 29 panic disorder (PD) patients, 27 social anxiety disorder (SAD) patients, 21 generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) patients. They were induced to breath-hold for as long as possible four times with two-minute interval between them. Anxiety scales were applied before and after the test. RESULTS: A total of 44.8% (n=13) PD patients, 14.8% (n=4) SAD patients, 9.5% (n=2) GAD patients had a panic attack

Development of a Computerized Adaptive Test Suicide Scale-The CAT-SS.

OBJECTIVE: Current suicide risk screening and measurement are inefficient, have limited measurement precision, and focus entirely on suicide-related items. For this study, a psychometric harmonization between related suicide, depression, and anxiety symptom domains that provides a more balanced and complete spectrum of suicidal symptomatology was developed. The objective of this article is to describe the results of the early stages of computerized adaptive testing development for a suicide scale and pave the way for the final stage of validation. METHODS: Data from psychiatric outpatients at

Development and validation of measures of social phobia scrutiny fear and social interaction anxiety.

The development and validation of the Social Phobia Scale (SPS) and the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) two companion measures for assessing social phobia fears is described. The SPS assesses fear of being scrutinised during routine activities (eating, drinking, writing, etc.), while the SIAS assesses fear of more general social interaction, the scales corresponding to the DSM-III-R descriptions of Social Phobia--Circumscribed and Generalised types, respectively. Both scales were shown to possess high levels of internal consistency and test-retest reliability. They discriminated betwee

Nomophobia in the association between sport anxiety and happiness: Evidence from a cross-sectional mediation model.

This study examines the relationship between sport anxiety and happiness by focusing on the mediating role of nomophobia among university students. Grounded in the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping and Uses and Gratifications Theory, the study uses these theoretical perspectives only as conceptual frameworks for interpreting the observed statistical associations. The sample consists of 390 undergraduate students (48.2% female, 51.8% male; all participants were aged 18 years or older) enrolled in Faculties of Sport Sciences. Data were collected using the Sport Anxiety Scale-2 (SAS-2), th

Preliminary effects and feasibility of a school-based regular aerobic exercise intervention on PTSD-related symptoms among college students: a single-group pre-post study.

BACKGROUND: College students are considered a high-risk group for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Existing non-pharmacological interventions, although effective and accessible, still have notable limitations. Regular aerobic exercise, as a potential mental health promotion strategy, requires empirical validation in real campus environments to determine its specific effects on reducing anxiety, depression, and PTSD symptoms, as well as its role in enhancing psychological resilience. METHOD: This study employed a single-group pre-test/post-test design and was conducted in August 2025 at

The Effect of Therapeutic Play on Fear, Anxiety, and Treatment Compliance in Pediatric Emergency Nebulization.

BACKGROUND: Nebulizer therapy frequently provokes fear and anxiety in young children, reducing treatment compliance. Although therapeutic play reduces procedural distress in various settings, its use during pediatric emergency nebulization has not been sufficiently investigated. METHODS: This pretest-posttest control group study allocated 102 children (5-8 years) to intervention (n = 51) or control (n = 51). The intervention group received 10-15 min of therapeutic play (toy, mask, stickers) before nebulization; controls received routine care. Outcomes were fear (Children's Fear Scale), anxiet

Fractional end-tidal CO2 as an index of the effects of stress on math performance and verbal memory of test-anxious adolescents.

The research reported here was derived from the hypothesis that hyperventilation contributes to the decrement in performance observed in test-anxious students. From this point of view, students identified as test-anxious would be expected to hyperventilate to a greater extent than non-test-anxious students when confronted with the stress of testing. The experiment reported here tested this hypothesis by continuous capnographic monitoring of end-tidal CO2 and respiration frequency of 16 high- and 16 low-test-anxious boys and girls (ages 12-14 years) before and during tests of math and word-reca
